[2]NavSource Online, Coquille (PCS 1400) vessel page (verified live 2026-10-04) [other_primary]
- Locator
- Page lines 20-46 and 68 in the live HTML rendering
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The vessel page identifies this hull as originally planned PC-1400; laid down 22 September 1943 by South Coast Co., Newport Beach; reclassified YMS-451, launched 20 May 1944, reclassified back to PCS-1400, completed 26 December 1944, and commissioned USS PCS-1400 on 2 January 1945. It records reclassification to AMS-59 on 2 September 1947, a 16 September 1947 Naval Register strike, return to Navy custody in 1952, reinstatement as PCS-1400 in 1953, naming as Coquille on 15 February 1956, final strike on 2 July 1956, sale on 28 May 1963, and fate unknown. Specifications list 270 tons, 136 feet, complement 57, and two 800-bhp General Motors 8-268A diesels.

- Population
- South Coast construction trades (1943-44); Navy crew (1945-47 and 1952-56); commercial transferees after 1963
- Limitations
- NavSource is a secondary photo-archive compilation, not the official Naval Vessel Register or a DANFS entry; the page states that no DANFS history is available for Coquille. It contains no asbestos survey, material list, or abatement information. The chronology and specifications are carried as the best located ship-specific compilation and should be checked against Navy administrative records if found.

- Finding
- NARA's ship-number index records deck logs for PCS-1400 covering 2 January 1945 through 30 June 1945.

- Limitations
- This is a finding aid documenting log coverage, not the contents of the logs. The logs were not read and therefore do not establish locations, operations, crew exposures, or onboard materials. Coverage ending 30 June 1945 does not establish decommissioning or final service.

- Limitations
- This is an archival index entry, not the underlying drawings or specifications. The microfilm was not retrieved; the index does not establish that the plans contain asbestos information, and no material claim is made from the existence of the file.

[5]NavSource vessel specifications and NHHC photograph caption, Coquille (PCS 1400) [other_primary]
- Locator
- Specifications and propulsion block, lines 37-46
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- The documented propulsion arrangement is two diesel engines and two shafts, with no documented boiler or steam-turbine plant. For a small WWII diesel craft, this limits plausible asbestos-relevant system pathways compared with steam vessels to possible engine/exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation; these are era/design inferences, not confirmed installations aboard Coquille.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only. No ship-specific insulation survey, construction material list, maintenance work package, or abatement record was located. The source establishes the diesel specification, not asbestos content, quantity, condition, or remaining material.

[6]GAO, Navy Efforts To Protect Workers From Asbestos Exposure, HRD-80-2 (18 October 1979) [gao]
- Locator
- GAO product page HRD-80-2
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO's Navy program review is relevant era context for asbestos controls and insulation policy during the period after Coquille's Navy service, but it does not identify Coquille or establish asbestos aboard this hull.

- Population
- Navy shipyard workers and asbestos-program personnel
- Limitations
- Program-level evidence only; it cannot support a ship-specific finding, product identification, quantity, exposure, or causation. The full report was not retrieved because the GAO page was access-restricted in this environment; no claim is taken from details beyond the official product-page identification.

[7]Batch-8318 source sweep and authenticated CourtListener attempt via cl-auth-search.py [other_primary]
- Locator
- Search-ledger entries sl-uss-coquille-pcs1400-06 through -09; helper stderr files in the worktree
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos litigation record was established in this session. All four required CourtListener base invocations were made through the authenticated helper, but none returned reviewable JSON after the helper reported that the fleet-wide pacing budget was momentarily spent. Therefore litigation status is an open gap, not a negative result.

- Study period
- 2026-10-04
- Limitations
- This is a research-status finding, not proof that no litigation exists. Four mandated base queries were invoked through the helper and all four were blocked or returned no JSON under the fleet pacing stop. No asbestos-qualified variants were run because no reviewed base page overflow was available. No pleading, discovery record, trial finding, or judgment is classified.
