- Finding
- DANFS documents: launched 15 May 1942 by Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corp., Tacoma, Wash., under a Maritime Commission contract; sponsored by Mrs. B. B. Smith, wife of Lieutenant Commander Smith; acquired by the Navy 1 May 1942; commissioned 10 December 1942, Captain M. R. Greer in command. Designations: originally AVG-13; ACV-13 (20 August 1942); CVE-13 (15 July 1943); CVHE-13 (12 June 1955); CVU-13 (1 July 1958); 'AKV-13' (7 May 1959 - designation conflict, see limitations). After carrier qualifications off San Diego she reached Norfolk 11 April 1943 and sortied 27 June as nucleus of hunter-killer TG 21.12: her planes sank U-487 (13 July, 27 deg 5 min N, 34 deg 18 min W) and U-67 (16 July, 30 deg 05 min N, 44 deg 17 min W); escort George E. Badger (DD-196) sank U-613 (23 July). Second patrol (16 August-2 September): her planes sank U-84 and U-185 (both 24 August, ~27 deg N, 37 deg W). In TG 21.15 her planes sank U-378 (20 October, 47 deg 40 min N, 28 deg 27 min W). A fourth patrol ran 6 December 1943-18 January 1944. Ferry runs: 56 P-51s to Liverpool (6 February-9 March 1944) and 85 Army aircraft to Glasgow (24 June-20 July). As CTG 22.4 she ran ASW training off Bermuda; her group escorts sank U-546 (24 April 1945) after it torpedoed and sank Frederick C. Davis (DE-136). Post-war: aircraft and aviation personnel to Pearl Harbor and Samar; Alameda-Seattle transport duty; two 'Magic Carpet' voyages to Yokosuka (20 October 1945-18 January 1946); out of commission in reserve 4 October 1946 at Port Angeles, Wash. One battle star for WWII service.

- Finding
- NavSource building/fate data documents: Maritime Commission hull 179, type C3-S-A1; laid down 2 January 1942; launched 15 May 1942; acquired by the Navy 1 May 1942; commissioned 10 December 1942; decommissioned 4 October 1946; stricken 15 September 1970. Designations include (T-)AKV-41 from 7 May 1959 (vs DANFS 'AKV-13' - conflict carried in gaps). Reactivated as an aircraft transport in 1958 and operated with a civilian crew under Military Sea Transportation Service (MSTS) control as USNS Core: in service 1 July 1958 as T-CVU-13, T-AKV-41 from 7 May 1959. Photo-documented MSTS service: Saigon arrivals on 11 December 1961 (32 Boeing Vertol H-21C Shawnee helicopters and ~400 soldiers of the U.S. Army's 8th and 57th Transport Companies), September 1962 (15 'cocooned' HU-1A helicopters for the Army's UTTCHO airmobile evaluation unit), and 17 June 1965 (70+ Douglas EA-1F Skyraiders for the Vietnamese Air Force); Vancouver, B.C., 15 June 1964; berthed at San Francisco Bay Naval Shipyard Hunters Point mid-to-late 1960. The WWII-era archive documents: fitting out at the Seattle-Tacoma yard in Measure 22 camouflage, 24 January 1943; the U-185 sinking and U-185/U-604 survivors aboard as prisoners (NARA 80-G-77193 through -77211 series); the VC-13 attack on U-378, 20 October 1943 (NARA 80-G-207651); a National Naval Aviation Museum album of VC-6's war cruise aboard, 5 December 1943-18 January 1944; and a captured Ohka flying bomb loaded in Japan, 21 November 1945 (NHHC 80-G-269248). Fate: out of service 25 November 1969; scrap hull advertised under PD-X-902 (30 March 1971, opened 20 April); sold to American Ship Dismantlers, Inc., Portland, Ore., 28 April 1971 for $85,974.75; removed from naval custody 26 May 1971. Spec block: 7,800 tons standard, 15,700 full load; 2 boilers (285 psi), 1 steam turbine, 1 shaft, 8,500 shp, 16.5 knots; crew 890; 24 aircraft.

- Locator
- Todd Tacoma table, hull #11 row
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The Todd Tacoma construction table lists yard hull #11 as 'CVE 13, Core (MC 179), US Mar. Com./USN, C3-S-A1, 11,373 tons, 558 ft, delivered 10-Dec-42, scrapped 1971' - placing this hull's construction at the Todd yard on Tacoma's Commencement Bay (reactivated for WWII by Todd and Kaiser as Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding) and corroborating the Maritime Commission hull number, the 10 December 1942 delivery/commissioning date, and the 1971 scrapping.

[8]U.S. Navy, Bureau of Ships Technical Manual, NAVSHIPS 250-000, Chapter 39 'Thermal Insulation' (1960, page date 15 April 1959) - specification-level document for Navy shipboard insulation materials [other_primary]
- Locator
- BuShips TM ch.39, sections 39-11 through 39-13 (materials)
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- The 1960 BuShips Technical Manual's insulation chapter enumerates the asbestos material suite standard to Navy steam plants of this hull's construction era: MIL-I-2781 pipe covering including 85% magnesia 'formed from a combination of 85 percent magnesium carbonate with about 15 percent asbestos fiber' and a class 'formed from a uniform mixture of amosite asbestos fibers'; roll asbestos felt MIL-I-15091; asbestos cloth/tape SS-C-466 (80-95% chrysotile) as lagging; asbestos millboard HH-M-351; asbestos finishing cement; molded asbestos block for high-temperature service. This hull's two boilers (285 psi), single geared steam-turbine set, and associated steam piping are the equipment classes these specifications cover.

[9]Port of Tacoma v. Todd Shipyards Corp. et al., No. 3:08-cv-05132-BHS (W.D. Wash.), Order approving TSC settlement (Doc. 139, 2010-09-09); allegations recited from Port's CERCLA contribution complaint (Doc. 58) [court_record]
- Locator
- Order Doc. 139 at 1-3; complaint summary Doc. 58 (Shipbuilding Site, 1916-1946)
- Finding type
- environmental_record
- Finding
- A W.D. Wash. order recites the Port of Tacoma's CERCLA/MTCA contribution allegations that Todd Shipyards Corporation owned and operated parcels near the mouth of the Hylebos Waterway in Tacoma - 'the Shipbuilding Site' - from 1916 through 1946, and that Todd's shipbuilding operations disposed of contaminated material and hazardous substances into the waterway. The Shipbuilding Site is the Commencement Bay yard where this hull was built; a settlement releasing TSC (Todd) was approved.

- Limitations
- Establishes the builder's site identity and operating era (1916-1946) at the location of construction. The litigated contaminants were listed hazardous substances (metals, PAHs, PCBs) - asbestos is not among the recited substances; the order recites allegations for settlement approval, not findings of contamination or exposure. No individual or hull-level exposure is established.

- CourtListener opinion 2518886 - Herring v. Texaco, Inc., 161 Wn.2d 189 (No. 78774-3)
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- Washington Supreme Court opinion documents that Roger Herring worked for subcontractors at Todd Shipyards sites in the 1960s-early 1970s, developed pleural thickening (1986), asbestosis (~1989), and fatal mesothelioma (2002), and that his suit against Todd was barred because his asbestos claims were discharged in Todd's 1987 Chapter 11 bankruptcy (published-notice sufficiency was the litigated issue). Documents that occupational asbestos-exposure claims were litigated against this hull's builder corporate family in the postwar era.

- Todd Shipyards subcontractor worker (mesothelioma)
- Limitations
- Yard/corporate-level litigation at Todd's Puget Sound operations post-dating this hull's construction era; does not name this hull, does not adjudicate exposure aboard any specific vessel, and Herring's claim was barred on bankruptcy-discharge grounds - a merits-level negative for that plaintiff, not affirmative exposure evidence. Construction-era (1942) conditions at the Tacoma yard are not addressed.

[11]Batch-238 search ledger (this record): DANFS/NavSource/navypedia/shipbuildinghistory ship records; CourtListener API v4 searches by exact name and hull/designation numbers; builder-yard litigation verification [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-core-cve13-01 through -09
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, insulation specification, abatement contract, or docketed asbestos case naming USS Core (CVE-13) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener API v4 sweeps by exact name and designation - 'USS Core' + asbestos, 'USS Core', 'USNS Core', 'CVE-13', 'CVE13', 'AKV-41' - each returned zero opinions: a clean no-result across name and hull designations, not a name-collision artifact.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1942 Tacoma construction sits inside the Navy's asbestos-specification era and the negative reflects record availability, not hull condition. 'Core' unqualified is too common a term for meaningful litigation indexing, so all sweeps used exact-phrase or designation-qualified queries. The 1958 MSTS reactivation refit and the 1971 dismantling at Portland are undocumented for materials handling. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
