- DANFS record for this hull: laid down 5 April 1945 at Orange, Texas, by Consolidated Steel Corp. of Texas; launched 28 July 1945; sponsored by Miss Gertrude Corry, niece of the namesake; commissioned 26 February 1946 (Cmdr. - Limitations
- DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. Commissioning date in this updated entry (26 February 1946, consistent with the entry's commanding-officer table) conflicts with the original DANFS transcription and NHHC's own Ships-Named-for-Naval-Aviators appendix (27 February 1946) - carried in gaps. - Finding
- Published federal pretrial rulings name this hull: the R&R recites that Harry L. Goodrich served in the Navy 1959-1963 as 'a fireman apprentice, a fireman, a machinist's mate, and a boiler tender,' including 'on a destroyer, the USS Corry (DDR-817), from approximately September 1959 to June 1961' (followed by USS Harlan Dickson DD-708, July 1961-September 1962, and USS Yosemite AD-19, September 1962-June 1963). The complaint alleged he 'was continuously and daily required to install, remove, repair, alter, fabricate, work with, use, handle and/or otherwise come into contact with and/or to be exposed to [the defendants'] asbestos-containing products,' including gaskets and packing manufactured by John Crane containing chrysotile asbestos, causing malignant mesothelioma (diagnosed September 2, 2016). The opinion further recites a 2013 VA grant of a 10% service-connected disability rating for 'pleural plaques due to [a]sbestos exposure' and Goodrich's VA statement: 'We did repairs on pipes covered with asbestos & made new covers from asbestos... I was a machinist mate in the engine room.' Disposition: the R&R recommended granting plaintiffs' motion in limine (construed in part as partial summary judgment) to exclude evidence/testimony of the Navy's knowledge or negligence (sophisticated-purchaser and superseding-cause defenses); adopted September 27, 2018.

- Harry L. Goodrich (USN 1959-1963; machinist's mate/boiler tender aboard DDR-817 ~Sept 1959-June 1961); mesothelioma
- Limitations
- Pretrial-stage record: the hull is named in the court's recital of complaint allegations, affidavit, and VA records - discovery-record-level recitals, not adjudicated findings of exposure, causation, or asbestos content aboard. The in-limine rulings decide evidence admissibility and defenses, not merits. Post-September 2018 merits disposition (trial, settlement, or appeal) not located in public sources searched. Goodrich's asbestos claims covered service aboard three vessels; the opinion does not apportion exposure to this hull.

- Finding
- The Sept. 28, 2018 omnibus opinion and order in the Goodrich action resolved the remaining portions of plaintiffs' motion in limine, including expert-evidence and regulatory-statement issues. Internal Gearing-class profile research reports the opinion recites a Sumner/Gearing-class engineering drawing specifying amosite felts and asbestos cloths on forced-draft blower turbines and a partial tally of approximately 30.3 tons of asbestos thermal insulation/lagging in fire and engine rooms of Sumner/Gearing destroyers - litigation-record recitals of exhibit/expert materials. - Expert/technical materials bearing on Sumner/Gearing-class destroyers, including this hull's exposure allegations
- Limitations
- Existence, date, and citation verified via citing courts (e.g., Hetrick Cos. v. IINK Corp., E.D. Va. 2024, quoting '2018 WL 4677773, at *19'; Haskins v. Georgia Neurosurgical Inst., Ga. Ct. App. 2020); the specific drawing and tonnage recitals are reported by the internal class profile but NOT verified against the opinion text - do not treat as established. Even if verified, exhibit recitals in an evidentiary opinion are not adjudicated findings for this hull, and the recited drawing/tally are class-level (Sumner/Gearing) rather than DD-817-specific. Underlying exhibits not retrieved. Caption note: the CourtListener docket carries the original multi-defendant caption 'Goodrich v. Air & Liquid Systems Corporation' while the indexed opinions run under 'Goodrich v. John Crane, Inc.' (the sole remaining defendant) - same action, No. 4:17cv9.

- Finding
- Era/class inference: a Gearing-class destroyer built 1945-46 at Consolidated Steel (Orange, TX) with a high-pressure superheated steam plant (4 boilers class-standard; geared turbines; 60,000 shp) would have carried period-standard asbestos boiler and turbine insulation, steam-line lagging, gaskets and packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings. Documented yard events - the 1953-54 DDR-817 conversion and the 1967-68 drydock overhaul at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, March 1963 upkeep at New York Naval Shipyard, and the 1964 FRAM I conversion - are the kind of insulation-disturbance availabilities associated with exposure peaks, but no hull-specific asbestos scope is documented for any of them.

- No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement contract, ACM inventory, materials report, or disposal hazmat record for DD-817 was located in the public sources searched; the only ship-specific asbestos documentation is the Goodrich litigation record (pleading/discovery stage). NVR does not list pre-1987 disposals. No VA/DoD exposure study naming this hull was located.

- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the 1945-46 steam-plant build and documented yard periods are era-consistent with asbestos use. Does not establish that asbestos is or was present or absent, and does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

- Finding
- Partial sweep: two opinion-index queries completed, both returning 0 hits - exact-phrase "USS Corry" and hull-number query '"DDR-817" OR "DD-817" OR "DD 817"'. Remaining queries ("Corry" AND "DD-817" as separate terms; "USS Corry" on the RECAP docket index; the Goodrich docket fetch) were NOT run - repeated attempts returned a fleet-wide pacing stand-down (shared ~114/hr budget spent across concurrent sessions; helper exit 2, no ban incurred). The qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull (Goodrich v. John Crane, Inc., No. 4:17cv9) was located through the internal Gearing-class profile and verified independently via vLex full text and citing-court quotes; it was not surfaced by the opinion-index queries most plausibly because the unpublished E.D. Va. orders are not in the CL opinion corpus (the ship also appears in recitals styled 'the USS Corry (DDR-817)' and 'the Corry'). Name-collision class noted: 'Corry' also matches the city of Corry, Pa., the surname, and the earlier hulls DD-334 and DD-463 - the Goodrich service window (1959-1961) fixes attribution to DDR-817.
