DANFS identifies Corson (AVP-37) as a Barnegat-class small seaplane tender named for an inlet in Cape May on the New Jersey coast, launched 16 July 1944 by Lake Washington Shipyards at Houghton, Washington, sponsored by Mrs. G. A. Hatton, and commissioned 3 December 1944 under Commander S. P. Weller, reporting to the Pacific Fleet. DANFS specifications list displacement 1,650 tons, speed 18 knots, complement 215, and two 5-inch guns.

DANFS chronology: Corson was recommissioned 13 February 1951, departed Long Beach 17 April, and served as station tender at Okinawa 11 May-7 October 1951. After a stateside interval she deployed to the western Pacific 8 December 1952-4 August 1953 (planes tended in Japan, Okinawa, and the Pescadores), again 4 January-5 August 1954, and again 17 January-24 July 1955, the last tour including duty as station tender at Hong Kong, reserve training at Subic Bay, a seadrome laid in the Pescadores, advance base support at Keelung, and plane-guard duty off Indonesia for Air Force jets flying to Bangkok. She was placed out of commission in reserve 9 March 1956.

The Naval Historical Center's Online Library (mirrored at ibiblio/HyperWar) describes USS Corson as a 1,766-ton Barnegat-class small seaplane tender commissioned in December 1944, summarizes her Pacific and occupation service, states she was decommissioned in March 1956, and that she 'was expended as a target in 1966.' Its Bureau of Ships photograph captions (19-N-71507, 19-N-71508, 19-N-79903 through 19-N-79907 series) document the ship at Lake Washington Shipyards in launching ceremonies and in November 1944 in Measure 33 Design 1F camouflage.

Mirrored Naval Historical Center content; the corresponding live NHHC photo pages returned 404. 'Expended as a target' establishes disposal type and year only - not the strike date, sinking date, location, or any material condition. Finding
The NHHC Dictionary of American Naval Aviation Squadrons, Volume 2, Appendix 10 (Patrol Squadron Korean War Deployments) lists Corson (AVP 37) among seaplane tenders supporting patrol-squadron detachments: at Buckner Bay (China Sea patrol area) within a detachment window of 26 July 1951-4 March 1952, and at Fukuoka (Sea of Japan patrol area) December 1952-31 May 1953 - the latter overlapping Corson's documented 8 December 1952-4 August 1953 western Pacific deployment.

    Limitations
The live PDF returned 404 at fetch time; the quoted entries were verified through the search engine's indexed copy of this official NHHC publication. Detachment windows appear to be squadron-level spans that may exceed a named tender's actual presence: DANFS places Corson at Okinawa only to 7 October 1951 and stateside until December 1952, so continuous ship presence across the Buckner Bay window is not asserted. Documents aviation-support operations only - no asbestos content.

OSHA's 1994 shipyard asbestos final rule states that asbestos products were used extensively on American ships from the early 1940s through the late 1970s, including joiner bulkhead systems, machinery-space thermal insulation, ceiling tile, and fire-resistant bulkhead sheets. Corson's 1944 construction and 1944-1956 commissioned service fall within that industry era.

The Department of Veterans Affairs states that asbestos-containing materials were used in Navy shipyards and ships built before the mid-1970s, including engine and boiler rooms and other below-deck areas, for fire safety, and identifies Navy veterans who served on ships whose keels were laid before 1983 as an at-risk group. Corson, commissioned in December 1944, is a pre-1983 Navy hull.
