- Construction trades at Gibbs Gas Engine Co. (1941); crew accommodations of 17
- Limitations
- Establishes the hull's physical plant and construction dates from an official Navy publication - exposure-relevant in what it rules out (wood hull, diesel, no boilers/steam), but it is a specification table, not a materials inventory; it does not state the presence or absence of asbestos-containing components (gaskets, lagging, wiring) aboard.

Specifications: 200 t., 97'1", 21'8", 10 kts., complement 17, one .50 cal. machine gun, one 400-shp Superior K.N.A. diesel, one shaft. Call sign NBKP.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a reputable secondary compilation, not an official record - its struck-from-register date (3 January 1946) and 'sold' disposition are not independently confirmed against the Naval Vessel Register (which postdates this hull) or a MARAD status card (none exists in the MARAD vessel-history database). Wikipedia's infobox shows 'stricken 21 August 1947,' which conflates the strike with the transfer date. No asbestos content.

- search_ledger rows sl-uss-cotinga-amc43-01 through sl-uss-cotinga-amc43-10
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, materials inventory, museum hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming USS Cotinga was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener opinion search on 'Cotinga' returned zero results; the MARAD Vessel History Database holds no record for the vessel (consistent with 1947 disposal without reserve-fleet lay-up).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - only that no ship-specific documentation exists in the searched public sources. The ship's unknown post-1947 fate forecloses the museum-disclosure channel that produced records for preserved hulls. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

[5]Shipbuilding History (Colton), 'Minesweepers, Part 2: Coastal Minesweepers (AMc) Built or Acquired through WWII' + Ships' Data 1945 class footnote 'All AMc's are wood hulls' [other_primary]

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Class/era context bounding the asbestos question: seventy wooden-hulled coastal minesweepers were built to one 97-foot, 10-knot Accentor-class design in fifteen boatyards in 1941-42. Cotinga's plant (per Ships' Data 1945) was a single 400-shp diesel engine with diesel-driven generators - no boilers, no steam lines - in a wood hull, so the asbestos applications typical of steam warships (boiler and fireroom insulation, steam-line lagging, bulkhead fireproofing on steel structure) were largely absent by design. Any asbestos aboard would have been confined to era-standard machinery items: exhaust lagging, gaskets, packing, and minor electrical insulation.

- Population
- Construction trades at fifteen small boatyards (1941-42); crews of 17 per hull
- Limitations
- Inference only, and deliberately bounded: no source documents any asbestos product installed aboard this hull or class; the wood hull and diesel plant eliminate the largest steam-era asbestos applications rather than add exposure pathways. Does not establish presence, quantity, or any individual exposure.

- Archival lead only - confirms the logs exist and their coverage dates; does not establish their contents, and deck logs are operational records not expected to contain asbestos or materials documentation. The listed range ends 31 August 1945; the period through decommissioning (13 December 1945) is not covered by this index entry. Digitization status unverified.

[7]Shipbuilding History (Colton), Gibbs Gas Engine Works yard list, Jacksonville FL - Cotinga (AMc 43) entry and yard history [other_primary]
- Locator
- shipbuildinghistory.com Gibbs yard page, build table row for Cotinga (AMc 43)
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The builder's yard list records Cotinga (AMc 43) as a U.S. Navy minesweeper of 205 GT, 97 ft, delivered 14 June 1941, disposition 'Sold 1947.' Yard history: Gibbs Gas Engine Works (founded 1911) built small wooden and steel vessels in both World Wars, was renamed Gibbs Corporation after WWII, sold to Aerojet-General in 1964, became part of Jacksonville Shipyards, and was closed by Terex Corp. in 1992.
