    Finding
NHHC DANFS identifies Courage (PG-70) as built in 1939 by Harland and Wolff, Ltd., Belfast, commissioned in the Royal Navy as HMS Heartsease, acquired by the U.S. Navy on 18 March 1942, and commissioned on 3 April 1942. DANFS identifies its class as Temptress and gives a complement of 87. It describes Caribbean convoy escort and patrol, convoy service to Recife and Rio de Janeiro, the Boston-Argentia route, Greenland Patrol escort duty, and weather and plane-guard duty from Reykjavik. DANFS records decommissioning on 22 August 1945 and return to the Royal Navy on 23 August 1945.

    Limitations
The live NHHC DANFS URL returned HTTP 404 on 2026-10-04; this is a verified archived NHHC capture dated 2021-03-21. The entry supports the historical facts listed but contains no asbestos survey, abatement, product, or individual exposure finding. It does not establish the ship’s status after return to the Royal Navy.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The archived NHHC DANFS entry for USS Courage (PG-70) contains no asbestos-related statement. This source-level silence does not establish whether asbestos-containing material was or was not aboard.

    Study period
    1939-1945
    Limitations
This is a bounded negative finding about the contents of one historical entry, not a ship survey or a finding that the vessel had no asbestos. No ship-specific asbestos condition is inferred from ship class, construction era, or propulsion.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The planned four-query CourtListener sweep did not yield a complete, classifiable result set during this research pass; no conclusion about qualifying asbestos litigation is made.

    Search run 2026-10-04
    Limitations
The helper’s fleet-wide pacing blocked three query attempts before a CourtListener result was returned, and the exact-name opinion command’s output could not be retained. This is an incomplete search, not a no-result finding.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, product inventory, or exposure record was verified in this limited public-source research pass. This does not establish whether asbestos-containing material was aboard.

    Study period
    Search run 2026-10-04
    Limitations
The audit was limited by Firecrawl MCP quota exhaustion, a dead current NHHC page, and an incomplete CourtListener sweep. It was not an exhaustive NARA catalog search or a physical survey; asbestos status remains unknown.
