DANFS record for this hull: launched 25 February 1937 by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp., Quincy, Mass.; sponsored by Mrs. F. Learned, daughter of Commander Craven; commissioned 2 September 1937, Lieutenant Commander W. O. Bailey in command. Training in the Caribbean/east coast and experimental torpedo firing at Newport; departed Norfolk 16 August 1938 for San Diego; based at Pearl Harbor from 1 April 1940 as carrier antisubmarine screen. At sea with Enterprise (CV-6) approaching Pearl Harbor during the 7 December 1941 attack (not in harbor). Raids on Marshalls/Gilberts 1 February 1942 and Wake Island 24 February; west-coast overhaul, returned to convoy duty 8 April 1942. Guadalcanal transport escort from 12 November 1942 for nine months; Vella Gulf sweep 6-7 August 1943 (three Japanese destroyers sunk). Overhaul at San Francisco from 23 September 1943; TF 58 carrier screen January-September 1944 (Marshalls, Palau/Yap/Ulithi/Woleai, Hollandia, Truk, Marianas incl. Battle of the Philippine Sea 19-20 June). Overhaul and training at Pearl Harbor from 11 October 1944; east-coast/Mediterranean operations 1945; decommissioned at Pearl Harbor 19 April 1946; sold 2 October 1947. Nine battle stars for WWII service.

Bethlehem Fore River construction trades 1935-37; wartime and postwar crew (DANFS design complement 158)
    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. Live NHHC page returned 404 on 2026-09-27; the 2024-11-27 Wayback capture of the canonical URL is cited. A Destroyer History Foundation transcription of the same entry reads '26 February' for the launch - a transcription typo; the NHHC text reads 25 February (conflict logged in gaps). The entry does not name the specific yards for the 1942 'west coast' or 1943 'San Francisco' overhauls.

As-built Bureau of Ships record covering this hull (DD-382 column surveyed separately from DD-380): length overall 341 ft 1-9/16 in; molded beam 35 ft 10-1/4 in; designed displacement 1,500 tons standard / 1,725 tons normal at 10 ft 9-1/4 in draft; propelling machinery 4 x Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp. 3-drum boilers (Yarrow type) at 618 psi working pressure; Bethlehem Shipbuilding high-pressure (1-stage impulse-reaction), low-pressure, and astern turbines; 2 shafts, 50,000 SHP at 415 RPM; ordnance outfit four 5-inch/38 guns, four .50-cal machine guns, four quadruple 21-inch torpedo tube mounts. Establishes the as-built machinery configuration of this hull.

    Limitations
Retrieved sections (A-1 General, A-5 Ordnance) contain surveyed dimensions, capacities, machinery tables, and ordnance only - no insulation, lagging, or materials itemization appears; the document does not establish or exclude asbestos content aboard this hull. OCR of all 12 scanned pages found zero matches for asbestos/magnesia/lagging/insulation/marinite terms. Full GIB series for DD-382 (remaining sections, if extant) at NARA RG 19 is the deeper archival lead.

    Finding
Bureau of Ships photograph placing this hull in San Francisco Bay on 24 November 1943, photographed by Mare Island Navy Yard personnel - contemporaneous with the San Francisco overhaul period DANFS records as beginning 23 September 1943. NavSource photo captions independently place the hull at Mare Island on 10 May 1942, consistent with the spring-1942 'west coast overhaul' DANFS records. Documents Navy-yard contact for this hull but not the work performed.

    Limitations
Establishes physical presence at/near Mare Island Navy Yard in May 1942 and November 1943; the overhaul yard is not named in DANFS and the photos do not document scope of work, materials handled, or asbestos disturbance. NavSource captions are volunteer-contributed attributions; the NHHC photo record itself is authoritative for date/place/photographer.

    Finding
No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull located in CourtListener. Exact-name searches return zero opinions and zero dockets. The 120 "Craven asbestos" opinion hits are surname collisions (e.g., Craven v. Director, OWCP, 5th Cir. 2010 - a claimant named Craven; Elizabeth Craven in Atwell v. City of Rohnert Park, Cal. App. 2018) with no vessel reference in the first twenty results. The single "DD-382" opinion hit (McMillon v. State, Fla. DCA 1978) is a burglary appeal - the string is an exhibit/rule reference, not the hull. The four "DD-382" docket hits are likewise collisions: a land condemnation, a patent case, the Sarver v. Chartier 'Hurt Locker' personal-injury appeal, and an environmental agency-review action - none asbestos, none maritime.

    Finding
Era/yard inference: a Gridley-class destroyer built 1935-37 at Bethlehem's Fore River yard with a four-boiler high-pressure steam plant would have carried period-standard asbestos insulation on boilers, turbines, steam lines, and condensate/feed systems, plus gaskets, valve packing, fireproofing, and electrical insulation, consistent with documented 1930s-40s Navy destroyer construction practice. The builder yard is documented at yard level in the Atlas dataset (fore-river-shipyard), including product-specific litigation records (Raybestos-Manhattan welding blankets, Owens-Illinois pipe insulation during Salem/Des Moines construction).

Ship-specific federal records exist and are retrievable: the CNO WWII war-diary series holds monthly Craven war diaries (July 1944 confirmed in the NARA catalog); Destroyer History Foundation's official-records collection hosts scanned Craven deck logs and the 6-7 August 1943 Vella Gulf action report; the full Bureau of Ships General Information Book series and NARA RG 19/RG 24 holdings are the path to any hull-level materials documentation.

1944 (war diary); records created 1941-1945

These records were located but not reviewed for asbestos content; deck logs and war diaries are operational documents unlikely to itemize materials. The retrieved GIB sections contain no insulation data. NARA retrieval was not performed.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, environmental record, or docketed asbestos case naming USS Craven (DD-382) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The hull was sold for scrap in 1947 - predating NPS/NRHP designation, HAER documentation, and modern ACM survey regimes - so no museum-condition or registration-file asbestos disclosures exist for this vessel.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1937 steam-plant destroyer is a strong class-era candidate - and does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility. Scrapping-era documentation (1947 sale buyer, dismantling site) was not located in authoritative sources.
