    Limitations
The live NHHC URL returns HTTP 404 (verified 2026-09-23); reconstructed from search-index text, not directly rendered - partial verification. Establishes only the Navy-side end of service; does not establish or corroborate any subsequent civilian ownership, renaming, or fate (see gaps - that chain rests solely on a non-approved source and is excluded here).

  2. [2]Naval History and Heritage Command, H-Gram 001-2, 'USS Ward' (Director's Corner, NHHC) [other_primary]
    Locator
H-Gram 001-2, section on the pre-attack submarine contact (Condor/Ward narrative naming Crossbill as the companion minesweeper)
    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
In the pre-dawn hours of 7 December 1941, Crossbill was conducting a routine minesweeping run across the Pearl Harbor channel entrance alongside Condor (AMc-14) when, at approximately 0342, Condor's officer of the deck sighted a suspicious wake and identified what was believed to be a submarine periscope and the conning tower of a midget submarine. At 0357 Condor signaled the destroyer Ward (DD-139) by blinker and clear-voice radio: 'Sighted submerged submarine on westerly course, speed 9 knots.' Ward subsequently attacked and sank a Japanese Type A midget submarine - one of the opening actions of the attack on Pearl Harbor, roughly three hours before the air raid began.

Crew of Crossbill and Condor (AMc-14), 7 December 1941
    Limitations
The live NHHC H-Gram URL returns HTTP 404 (verified 2026-09-23); this finding was reconstructed from search-index text, not directly rendered - treated as partial verification. Crossbill's role in the narrative is as Condor's companion minesweeper on the same patrol; the periscope sighting, signal to Ward, and subsequent attack are Condor's and Ward's actions, not Crossbill's. Establishes vessel presence and historical context only - no asbestos content.

  3. [3]CourtListener API v4 (via fleet-authenticated helper), searches: opinion + RECAP/docket for exact name "USS Crossbill"; opinion + RECAP/docket for "Crossbill AMc-9" [court_record]
    Locator
Fleet CourtListener helper search log, 2026-09-23 (four queries: type=o and type=r for each of two query strings)
    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
Exact-name search "USS Crossbill" returned zero opinions and zero RECAP dockets. The broader query "Crossbill AMc-9" returned zero opinions and six RECAP dockets; all six were reviewed and are name collisions unrelated to the vessel, Navy service, or asbestos: Font Bureau, Inc. v. Chaves (E.D.N.Y., trademark); In re Tribune Media Company (bankruptcy); In re Highway Technologies, Inc. (bankruptcy); In re Yellow Corporation (bankruptcy); In re PG&E Corporation (bankruptcy); Keller v. Automattic Inc. No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull was located.

    Limitations
Absence of a docketed case does not establish that no exposure occurred aboard this hull; it establishes only that no qualifying case was found in CourtListener's indexed opinions/RECAP dockets as of the search date. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

  4. [4]Batch-1629 search ledger (this record): NHHC DANFS and H-Gram search-index reconstruction; CourtListener API v4; NARA catalog (catalog.archives.gov); Naval Vessel Register (nvr.navy.mil); general web search for ship-specific asbestos documentation [other_primary]
    Locator
    search_ledger rows sl-uss-crossbill-amc9-01 through sl-uss-crossbill-amc9-09
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no survey, abatement contract, museum hazmat disclosure (the ship is not preserved), or design/engineering manual for this individually converted hull was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). Every source that discussed 'Crossbill' and asbestos together was a law-firm or mesothelioma-lead-generation site (banned category under this batch's sourcing rules) and was excluded outright, not merely deprioritized.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a small wood-hulled diesel auxiliary of this era plausibly carried some asbestos-containing gaskets, packing, or fireproofing, but no document supporting that inference for this specific hull or an equivalent class design was found. Does not establish that asbestos is or is not present; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

    Locator
DANFS entry, 'Crossbill I (AMc-9)' - opening paragraphs (construction, acquisition, commissioning, Fourteenth Naval District assignment, Pearl Harbor transit)
    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
Built 1937 as the private motor yacht North Star by Watchorn Yacht and Boat Works, San Pedro, CA; acquired by the U.S. Navy 31 October 1940; commissioned/placed in service as USS Crossbill (AMc-9) in March 1941 (task record and the older print-DANFS text mirrored on Wikipedia give 22 March 1941 as the commissioning date; search-index text of the current, expanded DANFS entry instead reads 'placed in service on 21 March 1941' - both attach to this hull, see gaps for the date/status conflict). Assigned to the Fourteenth Naval District 1 April 1941. Departed San Diego for Pearl Harbor 16 May 1941 escorted by the oiler Tippecanoe (AO-21), arriving 27 May 1941.

    Limitations
The live NHHC URL returns HTTP 404 (verified 2026-09-23); this finding was reconstructed from Google's cached/indexed text via multiple independently phrased search queries that returned the same specific dates and wording, not from directly rendering the page. Treated as partial verification, not fully verified. Establishes vessel identity and transit history only - no asbestos content of any kind.

    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
Through the remainder of World War II, Crossbill rotated in routine minesweeping and patrol duties between Oahu (Pearl Harbor, Bishop Point, Honolulu) and Kauai (Port Allen).
