DANFS record for this hull: namesake Daniel Albert Joy (b. 11 Oct 1918 Waltham, Mass.; Pharmacist's Mate Second Class, USNR, killed 5 Oct 1942 on Guadalcanal removing wounded under fire; posthumous Navy Cross); Rudderow class; launched by Bethlehem Hingham Shipyards, Hingham, Mass., sponsored by Mrs. D. A. Joy; commissioned 28 April 1944, Lt. F. E. Lawton USNR; Bizerte convoy escort Aug-Sep 1944; Leyte reinforcement screen; Philippines escort/patrol incl. Lingayen Gulf, Mangarin Bay, Mindoro; Manila Bay escort/ASW; Okinawa voyages; mine-disposal patrols off Mindoro; departed Samar 1 Dec 1945; NRT duty from Aug 1946; decommissioned 7 Feb 1949; recommissioned 11 Dec 1949; towed via Mississippi/Illinois/Chicago rivers to Lake Michigan; in commission in reserve 5 May 1950 as flagship, six patrol vessels, 9th Naval District; bracketed note: struck 1 May 1965, sold 11 March 1966; two WWII battle stars.

Bethlehem-Hingham construction trades 1943-44; wartime crew (design complement 186); NRT-era reserve and nucleus crews 1950-1965
    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and design data, not materials or asbestos content. The HyperWar transcription carries three defects: hull number misprinted 'DE-686' twice, launch dated 16 January (NavSource/navypedia read 15 January), and the Manila Bay patrol period reads '23 April to 10 August 1946' - internally inconsistent with the ship's 1 December 1945 departure from Samar; the year is 1945. DANFS also reads '12th Naval district' for the 1946 NRT assignment where the official All Hands article and NavSource read 13th Naval District, Seattle. Live NHHC page 404; mirror cited.

    Finding
Official Navy periodical documents this hull's October 1961 recall: 'uss Daniel A. Joy (DE 585) is once again feeling the salty spray of ocean waters' after 11 years on the Great Lakes; one of the first of 40 Selected Reserve training ships recalled in the partial mobilization; departed the Chicago Naval Armory (foot of Randolph St.) via the St. Lawrence Seaway for Newport, R.I., joining Escort Squadron Eight, Atlantic Fleet; crew of an active-duty nucleus plus Selected Reservists (Reservist skipper CDR Robert F. Flott USNR, 75 Reserve enlisted, 23 Ready Reservist volunteers); ASW refresher training scheduled at Guantanamo Bay. Also states the ship was assigned to the 13th Naval District at Seattle in 1946 and towed >1,500 miles to Chicago in 1950.

    Limitations
Official Navy morale/feature article - documents the recall, routing, squadron, and crew structure, not materials or asbestos content. Article predates the 1965 strike; it does not cover disposal. Finding
NARA's deck-log index lists this hull (Commission April 1944 / Decommission February 1949; Recommission December 1949 / Decommission May 1965) with month-level digitized log links for January 1956 through May 1965 - the Great Lakes NRT and Berlin Crisis periods. Deck logs are the primary contemporaneous record of maintenance availabilities and yard periods that could document insulation disturbance aboard this hull.

    Population
Crew and NRT reservists aboard 1956-1965 (record coverage)
    Limitations
Availability of the logs is documented; their contents were not reviewed. Digitized coverage begins January 1956 - the WWII and first-NRT-period logs (1944-1949) are not in the digitized set (NARA notes the series is partially closed/processing); those rest as textual records at Archives II (RG 24). Log entries record events, not materials composition - presence of asbestos-related entries is unverified.

    Finding
Era/class inference: a Rudderow-class (TEV) destroyer escort built December 1943-April 1944 with a twin-boiler, 12,000 shp turbo-electric steam plant would have carried period-standard asbestos insulation, lagging, gaskets, packing, and fireproofing. The builder, Bethlehem-Hingham, was a Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation yard - the Atlas yard record for the parent corporation (tier 3) documents period asbestos products incl. 85% magnesia block insulation, Marinite, pipe coverings, gaskets, and packing across its wartime yards, though the Hingham yard is not separately itemized. NARA RG 19 'General Information Books' per-vessel material specifications are an unexplored archival lead for hull-level data.

    Limitations
Class/era and builder-yard inference only - no ship-specific asbestos finding for this hull; the ship-specific records located are historical (DANFS, All Hands, NARA index, museum catalog), none of which address materials. Boiler manufacturer for this hull is disputed between secondary sources (Foster Wheeler per navypedia block; Combustion Engineering per NavSource) and is not asserted. Bethlehem-Hingham specifically is not an Atlas yard entry. NARA GIB retrieval not performed.

    Finding
No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull located in CourtListener. Exact-name queries returned zero hits in both the opinion index and the RECAP docket index. Hull-number queries returned 8 opinion hits (People v. Lane, Ill. App. 2010; Hofmann v. EMI Resorts, S.D. Fla. 2010; Carneiro Da Cunha v. Standard Fire, 11th Cir. 1997; Killion v. KeHE, 6th Cir. 2014; Brown v. United States, Fed. Cl. 2016; Pueblo v. Vazquez, P.R. 1988; Service Conveyor v. Shatterproof Glass, 6th Cir. 1955; Sierra Berdecia v. Long Construction, P.R. 1954) and 63 docket hits - every one a 'DE-585'/'DE 585' string collision in criminal, bankruptcy, insurance, wage-hour, and commercial dockets; none involve asbestos allegations or a naval vessel.

    Limitations
CourtListener coverage is not exhaustive of all courts or all dockets - absence from CL does not prove no case was ever filed (state-court and early PACER-era filings are underrepresented). What this establishes: no indexed opinion or RECAP docket names this vessel or its hull number as of 2026-09-28. Fleet pacing delayed completion within the session but all four queries completed; raw JSON responses retained alongside this record.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, insulation-sampling study, hazmat disclosure, or donation/museum condition report exists for this hull in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The hull was sold for scrapping in 1966 - there is no extant fabric to survey and no museum stewardship layer that would generate abatement records.

Absence of a located public record does not prove asbestos was absent aboard - era/class inference (ev-05) is consistent with period-standard applications. This row records only that no ship-specific documentation was found; it does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
