- Finding
- Documented for this hull: launched 28 May 1956 by General Dynamics Corp. (Electric Boat Co. Division), Groton, Conn. (sponsor Mrs. G. L. Russell); commissioned 20 October 1956, Lt. Comdr. Ralph R. Blaine. Post-war ASW submarine 'similar to Tang (SS-563)' with sophisticated acoustic, electronic and fire-control gear. Overhaul at Portsmouth, N.H. 1959; homeport Charleston, S.C. from 1 August 1959; Mediterranean deployments 1963 and 1967; major modernization overhaul 1965 (16-foot hull extension, new engines, new safety and electronic gear); homeport San Diego 1971, then Sasebo, Japan 8 May 1979 for a decade of 7th Fleet operations. Sailed for Hawaii 18 August 1989; last dive 26 September 1989; decommissioned at Pearl Harbor 1 December 1989; disposed of as a target 7 January 1992.

- Limitations
- Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. Yard-period asbestos disturbance is era inference, not a per-hull record. Builder is Electric Boat (Groton, CT), not Mare Island - Mare Island enters this hull's record only as the alleged exposure venue in the Leonard litigation, and DANFS does not place this hull at Mare Island during the early-1960s window Leonard alleged.

[3]Leonard v. CBS Corporation (General Dynamics), No. 2:12-cv-60177-ER (E.D. Pa., MDL-875), Order, ECF No. 63 (dated 2014-01-28, filed 2014-01-29; Robreno, J.) [court_record]
- Locator
- ECF No. 63 at 1-2 (vessel list), 6-9 (analysis and order)
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- Merits-level summary-judgment record naming this hull. The order recites that plaintiff John Leonard alleged asbestos exposure 'while working at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard during the early 1960s' and that 'the alleged exposure pertinent to Defendant General Dynamics occurred during Mr. Leonard's work aboard: USS Darter, USS Skipjack, USS Flasher, USS Nautilus, USS Seawolf'. The court granted General Dynamics summary judgment on ALL claims: (1) strict product liability barred - 'a Navy ship is not a "product"' (Mack v. General Electric Co.); (2) negligence - 'Plaintiffs have no evidence that any of the insulation aboard any of the ships at issue (whether original or replacement insulation) contained asbestos'; the co-worker declaration showed dust exposure from insulation but no asbestos-content proof, and expert Ay's asbestos-insulation testimony covered only ships he had worked on, not Leonard's ships; (3) the government-contractor defense 'need not' be reached.

- early 1960s (alleged exposure); 2012-2014 (litigation)
- Population
- John Leonard (Mare Island Naval Shipyard worker, early 1960s, alleged)
- Limitations
- This is a merits-level NEGATIVE for the Leonard plaintiffs' claims against General Dynamics, not exposure evidence: the court found no evidence that insulation aboard the named ships (including this hull) contained asbestos, and made no finding that asbestos was or was not aboard. The vessel list is a recital of the plaintiff's allegation. DANFS places Darter on Atlantic operations (Newport, then Charleston from August 1959) in the early 1960s - no MINSY availability is documented for the alleged window. Unpublished MDL trial-court order; judgment stage.

[4]Moore v. Crane Co., No. 1:20-cv-00466-MSM-LDA (D.R.I.), Electric Boat Corporation's Notice of Removal (federal-officer grounds), ECF No. 1 (filed 2020-10-30) [court_record]
- Locator
- ECF No. 1 at 2 (para. 2, alleged service sequence) and 3 (para. 3, Electric Boat naming rationale)
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- Asbestos personal-injury removal record recites the complaint's allegation that plaintiff Michael J. Moore 'was allegedly exposed to asbestos at various times during the course of his service in the US Navy (a) as a service technician from 1964-1965 aboard the USS Darter; (b) as an electronics technician from 1965-1969 aboard the USS Francis Scott Key; (c) as an electronics technician from 1973-1976 and from 1979-1981 aboard the USS Simon Bolivar.' Electric Boat was named specifically 'upon the belief that they may have had various responsibilities in the construction and/or repair of the USS Francis Scott Key' - not in connection with the alleged Darter service.

[5]Halseth v. General Electric Co., No. 3:07-cv-02543-EMC (N.D. Cal.), complaint Exhibit A work-history, ECF No. 1-2 (filed 2007-05-14) [court_record]
- Locator
- ECF No. 1-2, Exhibit A vessel list ('DARTER (SS-576)')
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- Asbestos complaint exhibit (plaintiff Michael Halseth's work-history exhibit) lists vessels the plaintiff worked around as an electrician at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo (1970-1976 employer entry), expressly including 'DARTER (SS-576)' among dozens of hulls.

[6]Era inference anchored to DANFS-documented construction and yard periods for this hull [other_primary]
- Locator
- construction-era inference from DANFS dates and yard periods
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era inference: a post-war diesel-electric submarine built 1955-56 at Electric Boat in the peak asbestos era would era-typically have carried asbestos-containing insulation, gaskets, and packing in machinery spaces and auxiliary systems; documented overhaul/modernization periods (Portsmouth 1959; 1965 modernization) are yard-disturbance windows of the kind in which era insulation was installed and removed.

- Finding
- No hull ACM survey, abatement contract, scrapping hazmat disclosure, or adjudicated exposure finding naming USS Darter was located. CourtListener sweeps (exact name + hull number) produced three qualifying asbestos-litigation records (Leonard - merits-level negative; Moore - pleading; Halseth - complaint exhibit) and no adjudicated exposure record.
