- Population
- Federal Shipbuilding construction trades 1942-43; wartime and postwar crew (design complement 319 per DANFS)
- Limitations
- DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. It does not state a laid-down date (1 Oct 1942 carried from the NavSource compilation) or the 1960 layberth; its post-1960 entries end at decommissioning, so striking (1974) and sale (1975) come from the NavSource compilation row. Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404.

- Shipbreaking workers, American Ship Dismantling, Brownsville TX (1975-76); reserve-fleet custody personnel 1946-51 and 1960-74
- Limitations
- Volunteer-maintained archival compilation, not a primary document - all dates are consistent with DANFS where DANFS covers them, and the disposal particulars (buyer, price, Brownsville site) trace to Navy disposal records but the underlying disposal document itself was not located. Sale price and buyer not independently verified against a primary record.

[4]Bureau of Ships, 'Ships' Data, U.S. Naval Vessels 1945' Vol. I (official BuShips publication, shipscribe.com scan) Fletcher (DD-445) class block + Atlas shipyard dataset, Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock Co. - Finding
- Era/yard inference: this Fletcher-class destroyer was built 1942-43 at Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock, Kearny NJ, to the class-standard plant (4 Babcock & Wilcox boilers; 2 General Electric geared steam turbines; 60,000 shp; 2 shafts). A steam plant of that design and era would have carried period-standard asbestos insulation, lagging, gaskets, packing, and fireproofing. The builder yard is documented at yard level in the Atlas dataset, including a 1944 Owens-Illinois industrial-health survey of insulation work conditions at the yard. NARA RG19 'General Information Books' holding per-vessel material specifications are an archival lead for hull-level specs.

- Federal Shipbuilding construction trades 1942-43; crew 1943-46 and 1951-60
- Limitations
- Class/era and builder-yard inference only - no ship-specific document establishes asbestos products aboard this hull. The 1944 yard survey postdates this hull's March 1943 commissioning and describes yard conditions, not this ship. NARA GIB retrieval not performed.

- GAO HRD-80-2 product page
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - placing this hull's entire construction and commissioned-service life (1942-1960) inside the documented Navy asbestos-use era.

[6]CourtListener API v4 sweep (authenticated, 2026-09-27): opinion search 'USS Dashiell' / 'U.S.S. Dashiell' / 'aboard Dashiell' / 'USS Dashiell OR DD-659' = 0 results; docket search 'DD-659' = 4 dockets, all resolved non-qualifying (Gitto v. A.W. Chesterton Co., S.D.N.Y. 1:07-cv-04771, asbestos PI, transferred to MDL-875 E.D. Pa. 2:07-cv-73417: 'DD-659' appears only inside scanned exhibit ECF 17-19, an April 1957 Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin excerpt - plaintiff Gitto was a Brooklyn Navy Yard shipfitter 1951-1996 whose recited exposure situs was the yard per Judge Robreno's memorandum, E.D. Pa. ECF 96; the remaining hits are patent/habeas/contract name collisions). Bare 'Dashiell' docket search = 1,441 surname collisions (overwhelmingly bankruptcy), no vessel reference. [court_record]

- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull located. The only asbestos-docket hit containing 'DD-659' resolves as a name collision: in Gitto v. A.W. Chesterton the hull number appears inside a Navy-wide personnel bulletin attached as a litigation exhibit, not as the plaintiff's alleged exposure site (a Brooklyn Navy Yard shipfitter case). No opinion names the vessel.

- Limitations
- Search-index coverage only: RECAP indexing does not reach all state-court filings, and the matching document is an image scan whose surrounding pages were OCR'd imperfectly - a DD-659 mention inside the bulletin exhibit is confirmed, but the full 10-page exhibit was not independently OCR'd. Absence of a located case does not prove none exists; establishes only that no indexed docket or opinion alleges exposure aboard this hull.
