- DANFS record for this hull: launched 19 July 1942 by Federal Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., Kearny, N.J., sponsored by Mrs. G. C. Davison; commissioned 11 September 1942, Lt. Cmdr. W. C. Winn in command. Atlantic/Mediterranean convoy escort 1942-45 (Safi, Oran, Bizerte, Palermo, Belfast, Naples, Marseilles); sortied with TF 85 for the Sicily invasion 10 July 1943; convoy under heavy air attack off Algiers 6 November 1943 - splashed at least one plane and aided survivors of torpedoed USS Beatty (DD-640) and two merchantmen. Reported to Charleston, S.C. 8 June 1945 for conversion to high-speed minesweeper; reclassified DMS-37 23 June 1945; Chesapeake Bay training to 27 August; Okinawa 15 October; Yellow Sea minesweeping and occupation duty to 11 March 1946; western Pacific again September 1946-March 1947; Naval Research Laboratory balloon-test team embarked for Marshall Islands March-June 1948; out of commission in reserve at San Diego 24 June 1949; reclassified DD-618 15 July 1955. Three battle stars for World War II service. Spec block: 1,630 t; 348'4" x 36'1" x 17'5"; 35 kt; complement 270; 4 x 5-in guns, 12 x 21-in torpedo tubes; class labeled 'Benson' in the DANFS block.

- Population
- Federal Shipbuilding construction trades, Kearny, 1942; wartime crew (design complement 270) and DMS-37 complement (~276)
- Limitations
- DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. Entry ends at the 1955 reclassification - it does not record the 1972 striking or disposal. The spec block's 'cl. Benson' label conflicts with modern Gleaves-class labeling (documented in gaps). Mirror transcription cited because NHHC serves 404 and hazegray.org did not respond to automated fetch.

[3]Owens-Illinois, Inc., Industrial Health Survey of Federal Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., Kearny, NJ (Aug. 30-Sep. 2, 1944); carried in the Atlas shipyard dataset (yard_id 'federal-shipbuilding-kearny', evidence_tier 2) [other_primary]

- Finding
- Builder-yard documentation: an Owens-Illinois industrial health survey of this hull's builder yard (Federal Shipbuilding & Dry Dock, Kearny, NJ) conducted 30 Aug-2 Sep 1944 documents insulator work with asbestos pipe covering (Johns-Manville Superex) and boiler insulation in confined shipyard spaces during wartime peak production, with dust counts measured during cutting/fitting; the Atlas shipyard record (tier 2) lists Superex pipe covering, Kaylo pipe/boiler insulation (1948-58 period - postdates this hull), Monokote fireproofing, and Garlock gaskets as documented products for this yard.

- Study period
- 1944 (survey); 1942 (this hull's build window)
- Population
- Federal Shipbuilding insulators and pipefitters, Kearny, wartime peak (~35,000 peak employment per yard record)
- Limitations
- Yard-level documentation, not a hull record - the survey does not name DD-618 and postdates this hull's construction (laid down Feb 1942, commissioned Sep 1942) by about two years, so it evidences the yard's wartime practices in the same era, not installation aboard this hull. Survey sponsor (Owens-Illinois) had a commercial interest; dust counts are in mppcf. Does not establish quantities or hull-level product list.

[4]HyperWar 'Ships of the U.S. Navy, 1940-1945' DMS-37 listing (Ellyson-class fast minesweeper ex-Gleaves destroyer: high-pressure superheated boilers, geared turbines, twin screws, 50,000 h.p., complement 276) + BuShips Ships' Data U.S. Naval Vessels (Jan 1945) machinery table for the No. 421 class (575 psi/700 deg F boilers) per Atlas class profile [other_primary]

- Finding
- Class/era inference: DD-618 is a 1942-built unit of the Benson/Gleaves machinery family (DANFS spec block labels it 'cl. Benson'; the Atlas class profile and modern compilations label the 1941-repeat DD-618 group Gleaves/'Bristol'). Four Babcock & Wilcox superheated boilers (575 psi/700 deg F in the class machinery table) and ~50,000-shp geared steam turbines place the hull squarely in the peak Navy asbestos era; period-standard applications were boiler casing and fireroom insulation, steam-pipe and turbine lagging, valve and flange gaskets and packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings.

- Wartime crew (270-276); conversion yard workers, Charleston Navy Yard, 1945
- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no document located names this hull's materials. Does not establish that any specific product was installed aboard DD-618, nor quantities, nor what remained at decommissioning. 'Peak asbestos era' is an era generalization, not a hull survey.

- Finding
- Archival leads located but not pulled: a NARA Bureau of Ships still photo shows this hull off Charleston Navy Yard on 28 July 1945 in post-DMS-conversion configuration, and NHHC photo NH 107439 shows the ship c. 1945. NARA RG 19 'General Information Books' hold per-vessel material specifications that could contain this hull's insulation schedule; not retrieved.

- Limitations
- Photos document configuration and location, not materials; the RG 19 GIB series is an unretrieved lead - its contents for DD-618 are unknown. Destroyerhistory.org is the access point for the NARA image (NARA catalog fetch for the photo ID returned no record online).

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or court record naming USS Davison (DD-618/DMS-37) was found in the sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener opinion search on the exact ship name returned zero hits. General web results surface only law-firm marketing pages claiming exposure risk, which are excluded as evidence by batch rules. The hull was scrapped in 1973-74, so no museum-era or preservation-phase asbestos documentation exists.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1942 steam-plant destroyer is era-consistent with asbestos insulation, and the builder yard's documented asbestos product use supports that inference. This row establishes only that no ship-specific public record was located; it does not establish or defeat any individual exposure or legal claim.
