- DANFS record for this hull: 'DAYTON (CL-78) was laid down 29 December 1941 by the New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, N.J.; reclassified CV-26 on 27 March 1942; renamed Monterey 31 March 1942; launched 28 February 1943; sponsored by Mrs. P.N.L. Bellinger; and commissioned 17 June 1943.' Reclassified CVL-26 on 15 July 1943 shortly after commissioning; departed Philadelphia for the western Pacific - Gilberts (Makin), then the fast-carrier raids; typhoon of December 1944 caused hangar-deck fires (planes tore loose); arrived Bremerton, Wash., for overhaul January 1945; rejoined TF 58 for Okinawa operations; home-island strikes to war's end; embarked troops at Tokyo, arrived New York City 17 October 1945; Magic Carpet duty between Naples and Norfolk; decommissioned 11 February 1947 (Atlantic Reserve Fleet, Philadelphia Group). Recommissioned 15 September 1950 for Korea-era service; departed Norfolk 3 January 1951 for Pensacola, Fla., operating 4 years under the Naval Training Command as a training carrier; decommissioned 16 January 1956; reclassified AVT-2 on 15 May 1959; remained berthed at Philadelphia into 1969; sold for scrapping May 1971. Her planes sank five enemy warships; Presidential Unit Citation and battle honors.

- NHHC Online Library narrative for this hull: an 11,000-ton Independence-class small aircraft carrier built at Camden, New Jersey; 'Begun as the light cruiser Dayton (CL-78)'; commissioned June 1943; Pacific service including the December 1944 typhoon damage and Bremerton overhaul; decommissioned February 1947; 'After more than three years in mothballs, the outbreak of the Korean War brought Monterey back to active duty. She recommissioned in September 1950' as a Pensacola training carrier; decommissioned January 1956; reclassified AVT-2 'but had no active service in that role. She was sold for scrapping in May 1971.'

[3]DANFS entry, USS Dayton (CL-105) - name-successor documentation (hazegray transcription) [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- DANFS CL-105 entry; batch-50 record uss-dayton-cl105.atlas.json
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Name-reuse documentation: after the first Dayton (CL-78) was reordered on the ways as carrier Monterey (CVL-26), the name was reassigned to a second Dayton (CL-105) - a Cleveland-class light cruiser launched 19 March 1944 and commissioned 7 January 1945 (covered by its own Atlas record, uss-dayton-cl105, batch 50). 'USS Dayton' appearing in 1945-1949 operational or litigation contexts without a hull number is more likely CL-105 than the CL-78 hull (which was already the carrier Monterey).

[4]BuShips Ships' Data, U.S. Naval Vessels, Vol. 1 (1 January 1945), CVL construction/machinery tables (MONTEREY Ex-CL-78: keel 29 Dec 1941; 4 shafts, 100,000 shp, 4 B&W boilers, 565 psi/850 deg F, GE turbines) + BuShips Technical Manual NAVSHIPS 250-000 ch. 39 'Thermal Insulation' (1960) + Atlas shipyard dataset [other_primary]

- Finding
- Era inference: Cleveland-design cruiser-hull construction (4 Babcock & Wilcox boilers; 4 GE geared steam turbines; 100,000 shp; 4 shafts per Ships' Data CVL-26 row) at New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, 1941-1943 falls in the documented Navy asbestos-insulation era; the 1960 BuShips Technical Manual insulation chapter enumerates the era-standard suite - 85%-magnesia (~15% asbestos) and amosite-fiber pipe covering, asbestos felt, chrysotile cloth/tape lagging, asbestos millboard, finishing cement, and molded asbestos block. Documented disturbance periods for this hull: builder conversion period 1941-43 at Camden; Bremerton (Puget Sound) overhaul January 1945 after typhoon hangar-deck fires; Philadelphia reserve-fleet layup 1947-50 and 1956-71; Pensacola training-carrier duty 1951-55. The completed hull's operational exposure profile belongs to the Independence-class CVL-26 record; this row characterizes construction-era context only.

- Construction trades 1941-1943; repair-yard workers 1945; crew 1943-1947 and 1950-1956
- Limitations
- Class/era specification and yard-period inference only - no ship-specific asbestos record exists for this hull (ev-05); this row must not be read as establishing that asbestos products were or remain aboard. Does not quantify material; insulation disturbance at documented yard periods is inference from work scope, not a documented abatement record.

[5]Batch-58 search ledger (this record): NHHC DANFS + Online Library + BuShips Ships' Data; CourtListener ship-name and hull-number queries (API throttled - blocked); web-search litigation mitigation; NVR; museum/disclosure sweep [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-dayton-cl78-01 through sl-uss-dayton-cl78-07
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located under either hull identity: CourtListener API queries ('USS Dayton'/'CL-78'; 'USS Monterey'/'CVL-26' asbestos) could not be executed - the shared-IP daily rate cap (125/day) was already exhausted and returned HTTP 429 (see search_ledger sl-uss-dayton-cl78-04); web-search mitigation surfaced only law-firm and marketing ship-list pages (excluded as non-authoritative) and no qualifying court record naming either identity; and no hull ACM survey, abatement contract, scrapping hazmat disclosure, NVR entry, or museum record with asbestos data was found. Attribution caveat: 'USS Dayton' litigation hits would most plausibly attach to the commissioned CL-105 cruiser; 'USS Monterey' hits attach to this completed hull (CVL-26) but also collide with other Monterey-named vessels.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - it establishes only that no qualifying ship-specific documentation was found in the searched repositories. The CourtListener sweep is INCOMPLETE for this batch (API throttled); the ledger logs the block honestly rather than claiming a completed search. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
