- NPS official record for this hull: Navy Yard received the order 25 January 1942; keel laid 20 May 1943; launched 8 July 1943; officially transferred to Royal Navy service in a ceremony at the Charlestown Navy Yard 14 October 1943, christened by Mrs. H. P. Webster (wife of a Yard design officer) as Captain-class frigate HMS Gore (K481). Under Lt. John Vivian Reeves-Brown she sailed via Casco Bay and Bermuda to Pollock Dock, Belfast; served in the 1st Escort Group (Larne exercises 20 Feb 1944); sank U-91 on 26 February 1944 alongside HMS Affleck and HMS Gould; sank U-358 off the Azores on 1 March 1944 with Affleck, Gould, and HMS Garlies (Gould torpedoed and sunk in the action); escorted convoy SL 171 to Falmouth (reached 7 October 1944), UC 48A south of Ireland (10-11 December 1944), and CU 56 (January-February 1945, detaching 5 February to escort Black Warrior to Cherbourg). Returned to the U.S. Navy 2 May 1946; sold for scrapping 10 June 1947. NPS also documents that 31 of the 60 destroyer escorts built at the Charlestown Navy Yard during WWII served in the Royal Navy.

- Official NPS shipbuilding appendix carries this hull's row: 'Herzog, Escort Vessel, DE-277' - keel 1943 May 20; launched 1943 Jul 8; U.S. commission 'Never'; fate 'Transferred to Britain 1943'. The foreign-names table maps 'DE-277 -> Britain -> Gore (K.481)'. Independent federal corroboration of build and transfer dates, and official confirmation the ship was never commissioned in the U.S. Navy.

[6]DANFS specifications block (Evarts class; 21 kt, cpl. 156) via mirror + NavSource DE-277 page (GMT-type specifications) + Atlas shipyard dataset record 'boston-naval-shipyard' (tier-3 asbestos-era yard) [other_primary]

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era/yard inference: an Evarts-class (GMT type) destroyer escort built at the Boston Navy Yard in 1943 would have carried era-standard asbestos applications appropriate to a diesel-electric ship - exhaust-system insulation, gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, winch/windlass brake linings, and deck coverings - but not the boiler/turbine and steam-line lagging that dominate steam-ship asbestos profiles, because the GMT plant is diesel-electric (4 x GM Model 16-278A diesels with electric drive, 6,000 shp, 2 screws; no boilers). Builder Boston Naval Shipyard is a documented tier-3 asbestos-era yard in the Atlas dataset (WWII peak employment 50,128 in 1943; John Crane gasket/packing exposure alleged in In re John Crane, Inc., Tex. App. 1st Dist. 2003 - allegation-level litigation).

- Class/era and builder-yard inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. No hull ACM record exists for this vessel; does not quantify material, does not establish any individual's exposure, and does not address Royal Navy modifications performed in UK yards, which are undocumented for materials. NavSource is a volunteer secondary archive used for machinery/spec corroboration only.

- Archival leads for hull-level material records: Boston NHP's archival collection includes ship history files of ships built, launched, repaired, or commissioned at Boston Naval Shipyard, plus ~70,000 yard photographs and ~13,000 architectural drawings - DE-277 was built there and the collection's scope covers it. BuShips general plans/specifications for DE-277 (NARA RG 19) are an additional lead. UK-side records of the Royal Navy's Captain-class modifications (The National Archives, Kew) are a further unretrieved lead.

- search_ledger row sl-uss-de-277-05 (CourtListener API v4)
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- CourtListener sweep (2026-09-28) located NO litigation naming this hull. Exact-name queries '"USS Herzog"' and '"HMS Gore"' each returned ZERO opinion hits. Hull-number query '"DE-277"' returned 14 opinion hits, all token/name collisions with no vessel connection (Hobbs Act robbery, medical-malpractice, tax, Puerto Rico election/disbarment matters, and docket-number tokens). Bare 'Herzog' returned 7,524 opinion hits and 20,325 loose tokenized docket matches whose top-ranked results are all surname collisions (family law, medical malpractice, criminal, personal bankruptcy, RICO, motor-vehicle tort, habeas) - none vessel-related, none asbestos. Any future 'Herzog'/'Gore' hit would additionally require screening against USS Herzog (DE-178), the Cannon-class sister-name hull that actually served in U.S. commission 1943-44, and against the common surnames.

Opinion/docket counts reflect loose tokenized matching - top-ranked results were screened individually. Queries ran under fleet-wide shared pacing; several spaced attempts were required.

- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for DE-277/USS Herzog/HMS Gore (K.481): the ship was sold for scrapping in 1946-47 - decades before ACM surveys or abatement recordkeeping existed - so no hull ACM survey, abatement record, donation-condition hazmat disclosure, or museum documentation exists to locate; and no qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull was found. The record stands at class_or_era documentation level.
