- Finding
- DANFS entry 'Trumpeter' (Vol. 7, pp.310-311, 1981) covering this hull: namesake Lt. (j.g.) George Nelson Trumpeter, USNR, killed in air combat 8 November 1942 flying an F4F from USS Santee (CVE-29) during Operation Torch. 'DE-279 - originally named TRUMPETER - was renamed KEMPTHORNE in June 1943 when the Bureau of Ships decided that, upon completion, the EVARTS class destroyer escort would be turned over to the United Kingdom. Laid down on 5 June 1943 by the Boston Navy Yard, the warship was launched on 17 July 1943 and was formally transferred to the United Kingdom on 23 October 1943 under terms of the Lend-Lease agreement. KEMPTHORNE (K.483) served the Royal Navy in the North Atlantic as a CAPTAIN class frigate through the end of World War II. In May 1945, she was one of two British warships which presided over the surrender of the German U-boats at Trondheim, Norway. While still in England, KEMPTHORNE was returned to the custody of the United States on 20 August 1945 and was commissioned in the United States Navy the same day for the voyage home. The destroyer escort arrived at Philadelphia on 8 September 1945 and was decommissioned at the navy yard there on 17 October. Struck from the Navy list on 1 November 1945, KEMPTHORNE was scrapped by 28 May 1946.'

- Finding
- Era/design inference: DE-279 is an Evarts-class (GMT = GM diesel-electric tandem motor drive) destroyer escort built at the Boston Navy Yard in 1943 - four GM 16-278A diesel engines with electric drive, no boilers, no steam plant. The heavy asbestos categories of steam warships (boiler insulation, steam-line lagging) therefore do not apply to this hull; the era-consistent application set for a diesel-electric escort is exhaust-system insulation, gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, winch/windlass brake linings, and deck coverings, inside the documented Navy asbestos era (see GAO row). Builder-yard context: Boston Naval Shipyard is a tier-3 yard in the Atlas dataset (WWII peak employment 50,128 in 1943; litigation product-id for John Crane gaskets/packing exposure at the yard in In re John Crane, Inc., Tex. App. 2003); Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, the decommission/scrapping site, is also tier-3 with multiple litigation-documented asbestos products.

No materials schedule, survey, or crew record for DE-279 was located; this row establishes era plausibility, not installed materials. The diesel-electric plant means the largest asbestos categories of steam ships do not apply. Establishes no quantity, no location, no individual exposure, no causation, and no legal eligibility.

- CourtListener sweep (authenticated API v4 via cl-auth-search.py, 2026-09-28): '"DE-279"' (type=o) returned 20 hits, all identifier collisions - 'DE-279'/'DE 279' occurs as docket-entry/record citations in unrelated matters (United States v. Ransfer; Fair Housing Center v. Sonoma Bay; CFTC v. S. Trust Metals; Kaiser v. Johnson & Johnson; State v. Scheffield; et al.); zero asbestos mentions and zero vessel references in screened results. '"USS Trumpeter"' (type=o) returned 0 hits - no published opinion contains that exact phrase (and any 'USS Trumpeter' litigation reference would presumptively attach to DE-180, the Cannon-class Trumpeter that saw USN commissioned service 1943-1947). '"Kempthorne" asbestos' (type=o) returned 27 hits, all surname/legal-citation collisions (Cobell v. Kempthorne and other Interior Secretary-era case-name citations; asbestos opinions citing unrelated Kempthorne-named authority) - zero vessel references in screened results. '"HMS Kempthorne"' (type=o) returned 0 hits - no published opinion contains that exact phrase. 'Kempthorne' is also a high-collision surname (Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne recurs as a government defendant and as cited authority); any future hits require vessel-context review.
