DANFS record for this hull: specifications (Evarts class; 1,140 t; 289'5" length; 35'1" beam; 8'3" draft; 21 k; complement 156; armament 3x3-inch, 4x1.1-inch, 9x20mm, 2 depth charge tracks, 8 depth charge projectors, 1 hedgehog). Namesake Sir Robert Kingsmill (1730-1805), who commanded HMS Vigilant in the action off Ushant 27 July 1778. 'Kingsmill (DE-280) was launched 13 August 1943, by Boston Navy Yard, Boston, Mass.; assigned to the United Kingdom under lend-lease 10 June; and transferred to the British Navy 6 November.' RN service: English Channel escort; 'On 6 June 1944, she supported the amphibious invasion at Normandy, and in November she participated in the invasion of the Netherlands at Walcheren.' Returned to the U.S. Navy and commissioned the same day at Harwich 22 August 1945; departed Harwich 26 August, Lt. Comdr. George B. Calkins in command; arrived Philadelphia 8 September; decommissioned 26 October; struck from the Naval List 16 November; sold for scrapping 17 February 1947.

Boston Navy Yard construction trades 1943; Royal Navy crew 1943-1945 (Captain-class frigate complement ~156-170); U.S. Navy transit crew August-October 1945
    Limitations
DANFS documents identity, service history, and specifications, not materials or asbestos content - the narrative contains no asbestos-related content. Internal conflicts: DANFS dates the lend-lease assignment 10 June and the transfer 6 November, while NavSource reads allocation 14 June and RN transfer/commissioning 29 October (carried in gaps); DANFS reads return/commissioning 22 August while NavSource reads 26 August. The entry omits the laid-down date (carried from NavSource). DANFS text contains typos ('Harwick' for Harwich; 'He name' for 'Her name') quoted verbatim. Wayback capture cited because the live NHHC page returns 404 (standing link rot, BATCH-01).

    Finding
NavSource operational record for this hull: contract awarded 25 January 1942; allocated to the Royal Navy 14 June 1943 as HMS Kingsmill (K.484); keel laid 9 July 1943 at Boston Naval Shipyard, Boston MA; launched 13 August 1943; christened/sponsored by Mrs. Walter Douglas (Arleine) Snyder; transferred to RN and commissioned as HMS Kingsmill (K.484) 29 October 1943; returned to USN at Harwich, England on 26 August 1945 and commissioned as USS Kingsmill (DE 280), Lcdr. George B. Calkins in command; decommissioned at Philadelphia NSY 26 October 1945; stricken 16 November 1945; sold for scrapping 17 February 1947. Spec block: Evarts (lend-lease), GMT diesel-electric tandem motor drive, 4 GM Model 16-278A diesels 6,000 shp 2 screws, 19 kts, complement 156. Photo caption documents the hull in drydock at Portsmouth, UK, December 1944 'fitted as an assault landing ship (headquarters)'.

    Limitations
Secondary compilation venue (NavSource photo archive) - operational data (laid-down date, sponsor identity, allocation date) was not re-verified against a primary record; RN transfer/commissioning 29 October conflicts with DANFS's 'transferred 6 November,' and the 26 August return/commissioning conflicts with DANFS's 22 August (both conflicts carried in gaps). The December 1944 LSH (headquarters) fit rests on a photo caption sourced to a published survey, not on a modification record. Documents dates and configuration, not materials or asbestos content.

Royal Navy wartime service detail for this hull: 'Assigned USN penant DE 280 but not named'; commissioned RN 29 October 1943; returned to the USN 22 August 1945 (agreeing with DANFS against NavSource's 26 August). Commanding officers: Lt. George Henry Cook, RN (29 Oct 1943-26 Sep 1944; again 24 Oct 1944-mid 1945); T/A/Lt.Cdr. David Turquand-Young, RNVR (26 Sep-24 Oct 1944). Compiled event log: Casco Bay-Boston transit with HMS Bullen 1 December 1943; Boston-to-UK passage with HMS Lawford 5 December 1943; A/S exercises off Tobermory 7 March 1944; convoy CU-57 escort February 1945.

  5. [5]Navypedia, 'GMT' destroyer escorts (EVARTS) member table and machinery specifications + DANFS specifications block for DE-280 + USNI Naval History 'A Matter of Class' (GMT design-group definition) [other_primary]

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
Era/class inference: DE-280 falls inside the GMT (Evarts) hull block (DE 256/280 range per USNI design-group table) - Boston Navy Yard build, matching DANFS and NavSource. The GMT design's machinery is 4 General Motors 16-278A diesel engines with tandem electric drive, 6,000 shp, 2 screws - a diesel-electric plant with no boilers or steam system. A Navy-yard-built diesel-electric escort completed mid-1943 would have carried era-standard asbestos applications appropriate to that plant: exhaust-system insulation, gaskets and packing throughout engineering spaces, electrical insulation, brake linings on winch/windlass equipment, and deck coverings - not boiler or steam-line lagging.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. Navypedia and USNI are secondary references; the DANFS spec block confirms class (Evarts) and 21 k but does not state engine type. The diesel-electric plant means the largest asbestos categories of steam ships (boiler and steam-line insulation) do not apply. Does not quantify material, does not establish that any specific product was or was not installed aboard this hull, and does not establish any individual's exposure. Royal Navy modifications during 1943-1945 service (including the LSH/headquarters fit) are undocumented at yard level in the sources searched.

    Finding
Builder/inactivation-yard context: the hull was built at Boston Navy Yard (Atlas yard record 'boston-naval-shipyard', tier 3, WWII peak employment 50,128 in 1943) and decommissioned/inactivated at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard September-October 1945 (Atlas yard record 'philadelphia-naval-shipyard', tier 3). Yard-level documentation establishes asbestos use at these facilities during the era, not aboard this specific hull.

    Limitations
Yard-level records only - no yard record names this hull or any hull-specific work order. Yard asbestos documentation does not establish that a particular product was installed on or disturbed aboard DE-280. Finding
Archival leads for this hull: NARA's Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships and Stations 1941-1978 (NAID 594258) should hold the deck log for the ship's sole U.S. commission (22 August-26 October 1945, Harwich-Philadelphia transit and inactivation); WWII War Diaries series holds ship-submitted operational records for commissioned vessels of the era; NARA RG 19 'General Information Books' are the open lead for hull-level material/insulation specifications. The Royal Navy commission's deck logs reside at the UK National Archives in the ADM 53 series. None of these records is digitized or located at hull level for DE-280/K484 in this pass.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for DE-280: no hull ACM survey, no abatement contract, no hazmat disclosure, and no qualifying asbestos litigation naming the vessel under any of its designations (USS Kingsmill, HMS Kingsmill, DE-280). Museum/drydock categories cannot apply because the ship was scrapped in 1947 and is not preserved. Law-firm/mesothelioma-marketing pages publish templated 'asbestos exposure' content for this hull (e.g., asbestos-ships.com 'USS Kingsmill (DE-280)'); reviewed and excluded as non-authoritative advertising content per the hard sourcing rule.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard during 1943-1945 - era materials aboard a Navy-yard-built escort are plausible but ship-unproven. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility. CourtListener sweep complete 2026-09-28 with zero qualifying results (see sl-12).
