Documented for this hull: 'Dekaury (YT-178) was built by Gibbs Gas Engine Co., Jacksonville, Fla., and placed in service early in 1943 in the 1st Naval District. She was reclassified YTB-178 on 15 May 1944 and in 1946 was transferred to the 12th Naval District to perform towing duties until September 1947 when she was placed in reserve. Dekaury returned to active service at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in September 1950 and is so employed today.' Namesake: 'Two noble chiefs of the Winnebago tribe were so named.'

Laid up in 1947-50, Dekaury was returned to service at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in September 1950 and remained active into the 1980s. Reclassified YTM-178 in the 1960s, she was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in September 1985.' US Navy photographs caption her performing shipyard-tug duties at Mare Island: assisting USS Rochester (CA-124) departing post-overhaul, 20 September 1953 (photo NH 84584, Naval Historical Center collections); assisting USS Robert E. Lee (SSBN-601) mooring, 23 February 1965; PCU Gurnard (SSN-662) in the Mare Island channel, 20 May 1967; escorting just-launched PCU Guitarro (SSN-665) to dry dock, 27 July 1968 and alongside her sail 15-18 May 1969; and assisting USS John C. asbestos_application
    Finding
A 260-ton diesel-electric district harbor tug built 1942-43 at Gibbs Gas Engine sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications aboard a diesel-electric harbor tug of this type and period were thermal insulation and lagging on the diesel exhaust system and engine-room piping, flange and valve gaskets, machinery packing, and electrical insulation associated with the open DC switchboard plant. As a diesel/diesel-electric craft she carried no boilers or steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, work package, or restoration disclosure located for YT/YTB/YTM-178. Finding
Yard-level litigation documentation at this tug's 35-year duty station: Ulysses Collins welded at Hunters Point Naval Shipyard (1960-1973) and Mare Island Naval Shipyard (1976-1994) and died of mesothelioma; a jury found Plant Insulation Co. negligent and strictly liable. On appeal the court reversed only the exclusion of the U.S. Navy from the Proposition 51 fault-apportionment list and remanded for retrial on apportionment - a ruling on allocation/sovereign immunity, not on the underlying exposure findings.
