[1]Haynes v. Air & Liquid Systems Corp. (In re Asbestos Litig.), Civil Action No. 16-607-SLR-SRF (D. Del.), Report and Recommendation, July 21, 2017 [court_record]
- Locator
- pp. 3-4 (Haynes Navy service and USS Buckley testimony); p. 4 (no knowledge of packing/gasket asbestos); pp. 11-12 (Buffalo Pumps ruling and Gearing-class machinery-synopsis discussion)
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- In this asbestos personal-injury action, the court recited plaintiff Harold Haynes's testimony that, after boilerman training, he served aboard USS Dennis J. Buckley for six months in 1963 and believed he was exposed to asbestos while operating and maintaining boilers. He could not recall how often he worked on Buffalo Pumps during that six-month period, did not know when pumps were installed or their maintenance history, and did not know whether pump packing or gaskets aboard either USS Buckley or USS Halsey Powell contained asbestos. The court recommended summary judgment for Air & Liquid/Buffalo Pumps because the testimony did not create a material issue that an asbestos-containing Buffalo product was a substantial contributing factor; it further states a machinery synopsis treated the two vessels as similar Gearing-class destroyers. The record is a ship-specific alleged-exposure record and a merits-level negative for this plaintiff, not proof that asbestos was aboard DD-808.

- 1963 (alleged service); 2016-2017 (litigation)
- Population
- Harold Haynes, former Navy boiler tender; six months aboard USS Dennis J. Buckley in 1963 alleged
- Limitations
- The court recites testimony and resolves the product-liability claim; it does not find asbestos presence aboard this hull, identify a product aboard it as asbestos-containing, establish causation, quantify material, or establish exposure for any other person. A defense summary-judgment result is retained as a negative finding rather than elevated to exposure evidence.

[2]National Archives, 'Navy Deck Logs Available in the National Archives Catalog,' Dennis J. Buckley (DD/DDR-808) entry [other_primary]
- Locator
- Dennis J. Buckley (DD/DDR-808) accordion entry; Commission/Decommission line and 1956-1970 monthly catalog links
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- NARA's official Navy deck-log availability page identifies Dennis J. Buckley as DD/DDR-808, states commission in March 1945 and decommission in July 1973, and links digitized monthly deck-log catalog records for 1956 through 1970. The hull's confirmed redesignation is therefore carried as DD/DDR-808; this batch records the user-supplied exact commissioning date of 2 March 1945 but does not infer unverified construction or disposal details.

- Limitations
- This NARA availability index documents identity, broad service dates, and digitized logs; it is not a material survey and does not establish asbestos presence, products, crew exposure, builder, or post-decommissioning disposition.

- Finding
- NARA's Ship Plan Index identifies separate Record Group 19 Hull Series of Ship Engineering Drawings entries for DENNIS J BUCKLEY DD-808 (NAID 153714763) and DDR-808 (NAID 153714918). These are hull-specific engineering-drawing archival leads for determining original and conversion specifications.

[4]GAO HRD-80-2, Navy Efforts To Protect Workers From Asbestos Exposure (Oct. 18, 1979) [gao]
- Locator
- GAO product page and report summary; published Oct. 18, 1979
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO's Navy-wide 1979 review reports that the Navy's major use of asbestos aboard ships was thermal insulation and describes a 1975 remove-and-replace policy for damaged insulation or insulation removed for repair. This is context for a 1945 Gearing-class destroyer only; DD-808 left U.S. Navy service in July 1973, before that policy.

- Limitations
- Program-wide evidence, not a survey of DD-808; GAO fieldwork was at Long Beach and Norfolk. It neither establishes that thermal insulation aboard this hull contained asbestos nor identifies material, quantity, condition, exposure, or removal work aboard it.

[5]CourtListener API v4 authenticated litigation sweep, 2026-09-27 [court_record]
- Locator
- Authenticated helper query: type=o, q="USS Dennis J. Buckley", page_size=20; count=0
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- Authenticated CourtListener exact-name opinion search for "USS Dennis J. Buckley" returned zero results. The subsequent exact-name docket request received the helper's fleet-wide pacing-budget stand-down before an API result; per the required helper guidance, no retry was made and the required "DD-808" opinion/docket queries were not sent. No negative conclusion is drawn from the unavailable portions of the sweep. The independently verified Haynes decision is recorded in ev-01 from the issuing court's official PDF.
