    Finding
DANFS documents this hull: spec block (dp. 620; l. 172'; b. 36'; dr. 10'; s. 16 k.; cpl. 74; a. 1 40 mm.; cl. Agile); launched 5 December 1952 by Astoria Marine Construction Co., Astoria, Oreg., sponsored by Mrs. W. Norblad; commissioned 26 January 1954, Lieutenant Commander J. E. Tingle in command; reclassified MSO-429 on 7 February 1955; sailed San Diego 18 October 1954 to join Mine Force, Atlantic Fleet, arriving Charleston, S.C. 8 November; mine exercises locally and off Florida; 6th Fleet Mediterranean tours in 1956, 1957, and 1959; northern Europe cruise 12 May-30 September 1958; training and amphibious exercises through 1962.

    Limitations
DANFS entry coverage ends in 1962 - the ship's final two decades (through 1982) are not covered. Cited via verbatim transcription mirror because the live NHHC DANFS page returns 404 (standing NHHC link rot, consistent with Batch-01 finding). Contains no asbestos information.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The NRHP nomination documents the builder and build environment for this hull: AMCCO received a 1950 contract for five MSO non-magnetic minesweepers built of wood with aluminum engines and degaussing systems (~$5,000,000 per ship - the most expensive ships per foot built to that date); AMCCO was named national lead yard for MSO Type I construction in December 1952 after completing AM-428 (Dash); the nomination's vessel table lists 'AM429 DETECTOR / U.S. Navy / 1/26/54 / Scrapped 1983'; a December 1952 photograph shows USS Detector (AM-429) decorated for launching inside the boat shop complex; ~600 shipbuilders including 200 shipwrights worked the program in 1953; construction used laminated oak plank framing, cotton and oakum caulking, and wood preservatives.

AMCCO workforce (~600 shipbuilders, 1953); construction trades
    Limitations
Yard-district document, not a hull record - it documents the builder, construction methods, delivery date, and a launch photograph for this hull, but contains no asbestos or material-safety information (the word does not appear in the nomination). Its 'Scrapped 1983' table note conflicts with NavSource's 26 January 1984 sale-for-scrap date.

    Finding
EPA proposed the builder yard (AMCCO site, ~8 acres on the Lewis and Clark River at Jeffers Slough) for the National Priorities List in March 2011. Named site contaminants were heavy metals, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, and organotins in upland soil, groundwater, and river sediment - sediment concentrations up to 550x screening levels. EPA deferred oversight to Oregon DEQ in September 2012; AMCCO completed RI/FS in 2015; DEQ selected a remedy in 2017; cleanup was completed under consent judgment, with Certification of Completion issued 25 March 2024 and Conditional No Further Action on 17 April 2024.

    Population
Shipyard site (historic workforce and community exposure context)
    Limitations
Site contamination record for the builder yard only - asbestos is not among the named contaminants, and the record documents shore-side conditions at the yard where this hull was built, not materials aboard the ship. Does not establish or bear on asbestos presence aboard the hull.

    Finding
NavSource chronology (listed as 'Dash Class Minesweeper'): laid down 1 October 1951 by Astoria Marine Construction Co., Astoria, Oregon; launched 5 December 1952; commissioned USS Detector (AM-429) 26 January 1953 [typo - DANFS and the page's own CO list show 1954]; reclassified Ocean Minesweeper (nonmagnetic) MSO-429, 7 February 1955; decommissioned 2 October 1982; struck from the Naval Register 1 December 1983; sold for scrap 26 January 1984 to Wayne Hobbs of Huntington, CA for $22,229. Spec block: 775 t.; 172'; beam 35'; draft 12'; 14 kts.; complement 78; two General Motors 8-278A diesel engines, two shafts, controllable-pitch propellers; as built one single 40mm mount and two .50 cal machine guns. Commanding-officer list runs 1954 through CDR John J. Felloney (July 1981 - 1 October 1982) and includes LCDR A. F. Sullivan, USNR, 'Naval Reserve Commanding Officer' 1972-1973 - consistent with Naval Reserve Force training duty at Portsmouth, NH reported by secondary and crew sources.

    Limitations
Secondary compilation, not an official source - used because DANFS coverage ends in 1962 and this is the only located source for the disposition chain. Contains a commissioning-year typo (1953, impossible before the December 1952 launch); its header decommission date (2 October) conflicts with its own CO list (Felloney's command ending 1 October) and other compilations; its spec block differs from DANFS on displacement, beam, draft, speed, and complement. No asbestos content.

    asbestos_application
    Finding
Detector was built 1951-53 to Navy MSO Type I specifications during the period of peak asbestos use in naval construction. Era-standard asbestos applications for a diesel-powered nonmagnetic minesweeper of the type would include engine exhaust lagging, machinery-space thermal and acoustic insulation, gaskets and packing, electrical cable insulation, deck coverings/tile, and bulkhead insulation. As a wooden-hulled diesel ship she lacked the boiler/fireroom and steam-line insulation profile typical of steam-driven hulls.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, court finding, or docketed asbestos case naming USS Detector (AM-429/MSO-429) was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener's authenticated API quota (2,800/day) was exhausted at session start; a single anonymous exact-name probe ('USS Detector', type=o) returned zero results before backing off per batch rules - hull-number and party-name variants remain unsearched.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - she was built and served in the era of standard asbestos use. Does not establish that asbestos is or is not present; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility. The litigation sweep is incomplete because of the CourtListener quota outage.
