    Finding
DANFS official entry, verbatim: "The first Detector (AMC-75) was launched 29 May 1941 by the Gibbs Gas Engine Co., Jacksonville, Fla.; placed in service 18 September 1941; and served in the 1st and 5th Naval Districts during World War II. She was placed out of service 13 February 1946 and transferred to the Maritime Commission 8 April 1947 for disposal."

Live NHHC page (history.navy.mil) returns HTTP 404 as of 2026-09-23 - the entire history.navy.mil origin currently 404s, a standing issue consistent with prior Atlas records. Citation is a Wayback Machine capture (archived 2012-05-17) of the official page. The entry establishes identity, builder, and service dates only; it contains no material, equipment, insulation, or asbestos information whatsoever and supports no asbestos claim.

  2. [2]Naval Vessel Register (nvr.navy.mil), quick-find name search "Detector" [other_primary]
    Locator
    Quick-find results table
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Naval Vessel Register name search for "Detector" returns only DETECTOR (MSO 429) - the 1954-built Agile-class fleet minesweeper, later redesignated MSO-429, decommissioned 1982. No AMc-75 entry exists in the current NVR. This confirms AMc-75 (struck 1946, disposed 1947) and AM-429/MSO-429 (commissioned 1954) are two entirely separate, non-contemporaneous hulls that happen to share the name "Detector" - not duplicate records and not sister ships.

    Limitations
Confirms hull identity/disambiguation only; NVR carries no record at all for AMc-75, consistent with the register's coverage not extending to this small WWII district-craft hull. Contains no asbestos information; supports no asbestos claim.

    Finding
NavSource Naval History (private enthusiast archive) reports additional detail beyond the DANFS narrative: laid down 29 March 1941 by Gibbs Gas Engine Co., Jacksonville, FL; struck from the Naval Register 26 February 1946; specifications given as displacement 205 tons, length 97'1", beam 22', draft 9'1", speed 10 kts, complement 17, armament one .50 cal. machine gun, propulsion one 400 bhp Superior K.N.B. diesel engine on one shaft; fate after Maritime Commission transfer listed as unknown. No photograph of this hull is held in the NavSource archive.

    Limitations
NavSource is a privately maintained volunteer archive, not an official Navy/NARA/NPS source under house rules; none of these specific figures (laid-down date, strike date, specifications, propulsion make/model) could be independently corroborated against DANFS, NVR, or another qualifying primary source. Carried here as a documented, attributed lead only - not adopted as verified fact in top-level record fields without this caveat. Contains no asbestos information; supports no asbestos claim.

  4. [4]Corn, Jacqueline Karnell, and Jennifer Starr, "Historical perspective on asbestos: Policies and protective measures in World War II shipbuilding," American Journal of Industrial Medicine 11(3):359-373 (1987) [other_primary]

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
Peer-reviewed historical scholarship documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material across U.S. shipbuilding generally during WWII, including gaskets, packing, and machinery lagging on powered vessels of the era, driven by wartime demand and federal allocation of asbestos supply to shipbuilding programs.

    Population
WWII shipyard workers and small-craft crews (general class context)
    Limitations
Program/era-level scholarly documentation of asbestos use in WWII shipbuilding generally; does not name this vessel, this builder, or the Accentor class, and does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard this specific hull. Weaker even than typical class-level inference used elsewhere in this dataset, because no Accentor-class-specific engineering or operating document was located (unlike, e.g., the Liberty-ship EC2-S-C1 operating manual used for other records) - this row is context only, not class-specific evidence, and is scored accordingly (documentation_level: context_only).

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for USS Detector (AMc-75): the DANFS narrative contains no material, equipment, or condition information of any kind; no NPS, museum, or preservation record exists (the hull was disposed of in 1947 and was never preserved); no shipyards.json entry exists for the builder (Gibbs Gas Engine Co., Jacksonville); and both completed CourtListener opinion-type searches returned no case naming this vessel (ship-name search "USS Detector": 10 results, all unrelated name collisions on the generic word "detector"; hull-number search "AMc-75": 1 result, an unrelated casino-injury case, Moreno v. Grand Victoria Casino).

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard this hull during its 1941-1947 Navy service - a WWII-built powered vessel of this era is era-consistent with asbestos-containing gaskets/packing/lagging in its machinery spaces. Does not establish presence or absence; does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility. One CourtListener search (ship-name docket-type search) did not complete due to sustained fleet-wide API pacing contention and remains open, not negative - see the corresponding search_ledger row and gap notes.

    Finding
Archival lead (not retrieved - no spend authorized, no in-person survey performed): NARA Record Group 181 (Records of Naval Districts and Shore Establishments) holds 1st Naval District (Boston) subject files that would cover a Boston-based district minesweeper of this type and period; NARA Record Group 19 (Records of the Bureau of Ships) holds WWII small-craft construction and contract files that could include Gibbs Gas Engine Co. hull records. Neither record group has been surveyed at the box/folder level for this hull.
