DANFS record for this hull (AM-90: dp. 295; l. 173'8"; b. 23'; dr. 11'7"; s. 17 k.; cpl. 65; a. 1 3"; cl. Adroit): launched 25 April 1942 by Dravo Corp., Pittsburgh, Pa.; sponsored by Miss C. R. Horton; commissioned 31 August 1942, Lt. W. T. Denton in command. Arrived Bermuda 30 December 1942 for antisubmarine patrol and escort duty until arriving New York 24 April 1944. Began conversion to a submarine chaser patrol vessel at Norfolk 16 May 1944; name canceled and reclassified PC-1594 on 1 June 1944. Sailed Norfolk 13 June 1944 for training off Bermuda; rendezvoused 6 July with a convoy bound for Bizerte, Tunisia, arriving 23 July; departed for Naples arriving 2 August for antisubmarine patrol and escort duty. Participated in the invasion of southern France 15 August 1944; convoy and patrol duty in the Mediterranean from Palermo, Bizerte, and Oran until sailing for the U.S. 27 May 1945. Arrived Jacksonville, Fla., 15 June; decommissioned there 9 November 1945; transferred to the Maritime Commission for disposal 29 July 1946. One battle star for World War II service.

Dravo Corp. construction trades (Pittsburgh, 1941-42); wartime crew (design complement 65); Norfolk conversion yard workers (May-June 1944)
    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. Does not give a laid-down date or a stricken date (both carried from secondary references - see gaps). Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404.

NHC ship-history page for this hull: built at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; commissioned August 1942; antisubmarine patrol and escort duty out of Bermuda late December 1942-April 1944; conversion to a submarine chaser renamed/redesignated PC-1594 in June 1944; entered the Mediterranean July 1944; Southern France invasion August 1944; convoy and patrol duties between Italy and North Africa through May 1945; decommissioned November 1945; 'Stricken from the Navy Register at that time'; turned over to the Maritime Commission and sold July 1946. Two official photographs document the ship off the Norfolk Navy Yard on 4 June 1944, mid-conversion, including depth-charge racks and K-gun projectors fitted on the after deck.

Corroborates the DANFS narrative and supplies the stricken framing ('at that time' = November 1945) and the conversion yard (Norfolk Navy Yard); contains no materials or asbestos information. Exact stricken date (28 November 1945) rests on NavSource only - see gaps.

    PC-1594 crew (post-conversion manning, c. 105)
    Limitations
Secondary compilation of official data, not itself a primary document; machinery line corroborated by NavSource (two 900-hp Cooper Bessemer GNB-8 diesels, Farrel-Birmingham single reduction gear, two shafts). The 105 complement figure is the PC-configuration manning level vs. DANFS's 65 for AM-90 - both carried with attribution rather than merged. No asbestos information.

Official Bureau of Ships preliminary-design record for the type: a 6 January 1941 plan for a 360-ton (full load), 170-foot minesweeper adapted from the 173-foot steel submarine chaser (PC 452 type) then under construction - a project the NHC notes 'apparently resulted in the Adroit (AM-82) class,' the class to which this hull belongs. Establishes that AM-90 was built to a steel-hulled PC-derived BuShips design of early 1941.

    Finding
GAO documented the Navy's extensive use of asbestos insulation aboard ships, with substitution of non-asbestos materials not beginning until the early 1970s - placing this hull's 1941-42 construction and 1944 conversion squarely inside the documented Navy asbestos-use era.

    Limitations
Program-level finding, not a hull record - establishes the era window only; does not establish asbestos aboard this hull, quantities, or any individual's exposure. gao.gov returns HTTP 403 to automated fetches; the product-page description was used and the full-text pull remains an open lead.

    asbestos_application
    Finding
Era inference for a 1942-built, diesel-driven steel minesweeper: the Navy's documented asbestos-use era (GAO HRD-80-2) covers this hull, and era-standard applications for a diesel vessel of this type and size were exhaust/muffler insulation, machinery-space lagging, gaskets and flange packing, valve-stem packing, electrical insulation, deck coverings, and brake linings - while the absence of boilers or a steam plant removes the largest asbestos categories of steam ships. Documented disturbance windows: construction at Dravo Corp., Pittsburgh (1941-42) and the submarine-chaser conversion at Norfolk Navy Yard (16 May-1 June 1944, hull photographed off the yard 4 June 1944).

    Limitations
Class/era and builder-yard inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding; no material schedule, insulation specification, or ACM inventory for this hull was located. Does not establish that asbestos was or was not aboard, does not quantify material, and does not establish any individual's exposure.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming USS Direct (AM-90) or PC-1594 was found in the sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener API was rate-limited (2,800/day shared cap exhausted; ~4.2h reset) and its web UI returned HTTP 403 to automated fetch, so the direct opinion/docket check is pending; third-party index searches surfaced only excluded law-firm listicles and unrelated corporate 'USS' name collisions.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the hull predates the Navy's documented asbestos-substitution era, so era-consistent presence remains a reasonable but unproven inference. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility. The CourtListener block means the litigation check is less complete than intended - re-query is the open verification step.
