- Finding
- The Pearl Harbor Navy Yard Industrial Department war diary names USS Dohasan, YT-335, in October-November 1943 and records an overhaul at Hawaiian Tuna Packers / Hawaiian Shipyards after work at Inter-Island Drydock. Work included the main diesel engine, auxiliary diesel generator, pumps, deck machinery, deckhouse and above-waterline hull repairs. The 8 November entry reports extensive piping renewal at 30% complete.

- Limitations
- The repair entries identify the Navy hull and work scopes but never identify asbestos or the materials used in renewed piping, refrigerator insulation, gaskets, or machinery. Piping work is not proof of asbestos disturbance or exposure.

- Finding
- The NPS historic-place nomination documents the 1889 wooden tug Wallowa, later Arthur Foss, Portland construction, the 1934 conversion from steam to a six-cylinder 700-hp Washington Iron Works diesel, Navy charter and Hawaii/Wake Island service during World War II, return to Foss in 1947, and transfer to the preservation organization in 1970.

- Limitations
- The nomination does not use the name Dohasan or hull number YT-335; the separate original Navy acquisition list supplies the identity bridge. The nomination's statement that Wake Island fell in January 1942 conflicts with the historical December 1941 date; that precise statement is excluded. It contains no asbestos survey, product identification, or exposure finding.

- Finding

The ship-specific asbestos status remains unknown.

- Limitations
- This is a bounded search result, not proof that the tug lacked asbestos. Neither historic steam propulsion before 1934, wartime diesel repairs, nor modern preservation establishes asbestos content, crew exposure, quantity, or causation.

- Finding
- NARA explains that harbor tugs usually were placed in service rather than commissioned and that their deck logs generally were not permanently retained as independent ship logs. Parent-command records are a more promising archival path for this hull.

- Finding
- A Navy Ships Data Section acquisition list dated 24 July 1946 directly pairs Navy name DOHASAN and type YTM 335 with former name Arthur Foss. It records acquisition from Foss Launch & Tug Co. by bareboat charter on 11 November 1942 at Pearl Harbor.

[7]U.S. Navy Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, District Craft Development Board Report No. 60, 28 July 1945; NARA RG 80 scan reproduced by Shipscribe [other_primary]
- Locator
- PDF pp. 79-80, Report No. 60, paragraph 5
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The District Craft Development Board reported in July 1945 that YTM-335, formerly Arthur Foss, had been requisitioned on bareboat charter on 11 November 1942 and was operating in the Fourteenth Naval District. After the district commandant described the tug's material condition as extremely poor, the Board recommended continuing the charter until replacement craft permitted return to the owner rather than buying the tug.

- Limitations
- The condition assessment is general; the report gives no defect list and no asbestos or other material identification. The return to owner was a recommendation for a future event, not proof that it occurred in 1945. It gives no precise strike or out-of-service date.
