    Limitations
Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. Yard-period asbestos disturbance is era inference, not a per-hull record. Live NHHC DANFS page returned 404 on 2026-09-18; verbatim ibiblio/HyperWar transcription used. DANFS text does not state laid-down or stricken dates (supplied from NavSource cross-check).

Cross-check record: authorized as V-7 (SF-10), re-designated (SC-3); laid down as V-7 (SC-3) 14 June 1930 at Portsmouth Navy Yard, Kittery ME (USN photo caption: first rivet driven that date, Milne Collection/UNH); launched 6 Mar 1932; commissioned 1 July 1932 (conflicts with DANFS 1 June - variant in gaps); decommissioned 12 Oct 1945 at Portsmouth; struck from Naval Register 24 Oct 1945; sold for scrapping 26 Aug 1946; 2 battle stars. Spec block: displacement 1,560 surfaced / 2,215 submerged; length 319'1"; complement 5 officers 52 enlisted; diesel-electric propulsion - MAN diesels (hp 3500), Electro Dynamic motors (hp 1750), 240 battery cells, twin propellers. Photo caption (ca. 1943): little modified from peacetime appearance; after an inspection revealed considerable corrosion in her tanks she was sent back to New London for less demanding work.

  4. [4]Era inference built on: DANFS/NavSource spec blocks (diesel-electric plant, no steam); shipyard-exposure-map documented asbestos product lists for Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (thermal insulation; asbestos cement; pipe covering; millboard; gaskets; seals; packing; block insulation; asbestos cloth; friction materials; Kaylo insulation) and Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard (pipe covering; insulation blankets; cement compounds; gaskets; amosite blankets; asbestos mud; asbestos protective clothing; asbestos-containing wire insulation; asbestos cloth) [other_primary]

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A diesel-electric submarine built 1930-32 at Portsmouth Navy Yard and refit/repaired at Pearl Harbor Navy Yard through WWII sits inside the Navy's asbestos era; era-standard asbestos applications for a boat WITHOUT a steam plant center on diesel exhaust/muffler lagging, gaskets, packing, and electrical/wire insulation rather than boiler-room insulation. Both yards' asbestos product use in the relevant period is independently documented at the yard level.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work-package record located for SS-169. Names era-standard applications for a diesel submarine, not confirmed installed materials; no steam plant means no boiler-room framing applies. No quantity; nothing survives to sample (hull scrapped 1946).

    Finding
GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - encompassing Dolphin's entire existence (1930-32 construction, 1932-45 service, 1946 scrapping).

  6. [6]Batch-99 search ledger (this record): DANFS transcription; CO Pearl Harbor action report transcription; NavSource cross-check; NVR check; LOC/HAER check; CourtListener API + web UI attempts; indirect web search for litigation naming the hull [other_primary]
    Locator
    search_ledger rows sl-uss-dolphin-ss169-01 through -09
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying asbestos case naming USS Dolphin (SS-169) was found in accessible sources. CourtListener's v4 API returned HTTP 429 (125/day exhausted, ~34,211s backoff) and the public web UI returned an HTTP 202/403 challenge on 2026-09-18, so the vessel-name and hull-number litigation scan is INCOMPLETE - logged as blocked, not as zero hits. Indirect web search surfaced only law-firm marketing list pages naming the hull (mesotheliomasymptoms.com, mesolawcenter.com, mesothelioma.com, mesotheliomabook.com) - excluded per source rules; no qualifying result. HAER/LOC returned only name-collision records. NVR has no entry (ship disposed 1946, pre-dating register coverage).

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard, and the CourtListener throttle means litigation naming this hull cannot be ruled out - the scan is a blocked lead, not a completed negative. The hull was scrapped in 1946; no material condition can ever be documented from the extant record alone. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
