M. Maloney; commissioned 27 January 1943, LCDR C. E. Seattle-Tacoma construction trades 1941-43; wartime and postwar crew (design complement 208); conversion-yard workers 1945
    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and dates, not materials or asbestos content. Performing yards named only at city level (Norfolk conversion, New York overhaul, Bremerton departure, Charleston base). DANFS spec block labels the hull 'cl. Benson' - the record carries Gleaves per the Bristol-group 1941-repeat subclass attribution (see gaps). Edition variants exist: LST-rescue date 15 vs 16 September 1950 across transcriptions.

    Finding
Era/design inference for this hull: a Bristol-group Gleaves-class destroyer built 1941-43 at Seattle-Tacoma's Harbor Island yard with a four-boiler superheated steam plant (575 psi/700 F class data) would have carried period-standard asbestos applications - boiler casing and fireroom insulation, steam-line and turbine lagging, valve/flange gaskets, packing, deck tile, accommodation insulation, fireproofing. The June-August 1945 Norfolk conversion to DMS-34 (minesweeping fit) was a machinery-space-disturbing yard period of the kind that cut and re-lagged steam plant insulation.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, museum hazmat disclosure, scrapping hazmat record, or merits-stage litigation naming USS Doyle (DD-494/DMS-34) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). Law-firm vessel-list pages do carry the hull name (mesotheliomasymptoms.com, mesothelioma.com, mesotheliomahelp.org) - all excluded as non-authoritative per batch rules.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-consistent presence is expected for a 1941-43 steam destroyer; the finding is about documentation, not material fact. CourtListener coverage (2026-09-27): exact-name opinion sweeps clean (0 hits on "USS Doyle" and "U.S.S. Doyle"); all RECAP docket hits classified - every match a non-qualifying collision except one unresolved MDL-875 indexed-text match carried as archival lead ev-07; only the two hull-number opinion sweeps ("DD-494", "DMS-34", type=o) remain outstanding after fleet pacing contention.

Builder-yard archival lead: the Vigor Industrial Collection on Todd Shipyards holds Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corporation 'Seattle Division' materials dated circa 1943-45 (worker and yard photographs incl. sheet metal workers, welders, painters) plus Todd Dry Docks/Todd Pacific Seattle (Harbor Island) records - the yard and era that built this hull. Yard-level material schedules or hull contract files, if extant, would sit in collections of this kind.

Hull-level archival lead: NARA RG 19 holds per-vessel General Information Books (publications 'concerning naval vessels', 1900-45, plus Ship GIB accessions 1921-61) which carry as-built material specifications; sister-hull GIB excerpts (DD-423 Gleaves, DD-424 Niblack) are digitized at destroyerhistory.org but no DD-494 GIB was located in digitized sources. Wartime and postwar deck logs (RG 24) are the lead for yard-period detail.

    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
The MDL-875 RECAP docket matched the hull-number sweep "DMS-34" (and the combined "USS Doyle"/"DD-494"/"DMS-34" query): the matching indexed documents are asbestos complaints filed as tag-along exhibits (Brayton-Purcell, N.D. Cal.). Whether the matched text is a literal vessel-schedule reference to DMS-34 / DD-494 or token-level noise is unresolved - document-level fetches were not performed (fleet helper covers search only).

    MDL-875 plaintiffs (unverified)
    Limitations
Unresolved indexed-text match only - if literal, it would constitute a pleading-stage vessel-list allegation (the less-final classification); nothing adjudicated, and hull nexus is unverified either way. Document-level confirmation is the open follow-up.
