Spec block: Evarts class, 1,140 t, 289 ft 5 in, 35 ft 1 in beam, 8 ft 3 in draft, 21 kt, complement 156, 3x3in + 8 dcp + 1 dcp (h.h.) + 2 dct. 'Originally intended for transfer to Great Britain,' launched as BDE-27 on 16 April 1943 by Mare Island Navy Yard; sponsored by Mrs. Thomas Vice; retained in the U.S. Navy; commissioned 5 August 1943, Commander G. A. Parkinson, USNR, in command. Service: sailed San Francisco 2 October 1943 escorting a convoy to Pearl Harbor, training exercises then joined the 5th Fleet; 10 November screened carriers bound for air strikes on Mille, Jaluit, and Makin in the Marshalls; a week later detached to escort Neosho (AO-48) during the invasion of the Gilbert Islands, returning to Pearl Harbor 15 December. Departed Pearl Harbor 22 January 1944 in the escort for an LST convoy; arrived off Kwajalein 2 February for the assault landings; escorted unladen transports to Funafuti, Ellice Islands, arriving 8 February; escort and patrol duty in the Solomons 19 February - 28 September, then between Manus and Ulithi until 25 October, and through November in the Marianas. 30 November sailed from Saipan escorting a group of LSTs with men, supplies, and equipment, unloading at Leyte 6-13 December for the retaking of the Philippines; protecting the convoy during unloading, scored several hits on an enemy plane which crashed on the beach during an air raid. Returning to Saipan 27 December 1944; patrol and local escort duty in the Marianas and to Majuro until 27 May 1945; covered air strikes on Maloelap standing by for air-sea rescue, and on the 29th fired a shore bombardment; continued operating from Majuro bombarding and waging psychological warfare against bypassed Japanese-held islands; 14 June took prisoner seven men of the cutoff garrison on Mille Atoll. Sailed from Kwajalein 13 July 1945 for the west coast, arriving San Francisco 26 July; decommissioned there 9 November 1945; sold 16 June 1947. Two battle stars for World War II service.

- Limitations
- DANFS documents namesake, construction, specifications, and service history - not materials or asbestos content. Entry does not state a keel-laying date (BuShips Ships' Data 1945 supplies it: 29 October 1942), does not state a striking date (secondary sources read 28 November 1945), does not name the decommissioning yard beyond 'there' (San Francisco - NavSource specifies Hunters Point Navy Yard), and does not name the 1947 scrapping purchaser. Sale-date conflict (DANFS 16 June 1947 vs NavSource 21 July 1947) carried in gaps. Live NHHC page returns 404; verbatim mirror transcription cited.

- Official BuShips data for this hull: individual-ship roster row 91 - 'DUFFY DE27', group design GMT, 'By whom and where built': Navy Yard, Mare Island; contract price of hull and machinery $1,649,400; contract signed Nov. 1, 1941; keel laid Oct. 29, 1942; ship launched Apr. 16, 1943; date of first commission Aug. 5, 1943. The roster's 'DESTROYER-ESCORT VESSELS (DE)' list groups DE5-DE50 under 'GMT design' and DE27 DUFFY appears within that block. The DE design-group summary defines 'GMT= Diesel electric tandem motor drive - short hull' and lists for the group: 289 ft 5 in oa, 35 ft 2 in extreme beam, 1,140 tons standard / 1,430 tons full load, 21.5 kt trial speed, total accommodations 15 officers + 183 enlisted, armament 3x3-in 50-cal D.P. + 1 quad mount, machinery 'G. - Names this hull and establishes contract, keel-laying, launch, and first-commission dates plus builder and design group at official-source level. Documents machinery configuration (no boilers) but not asbestos content, insulation materials, or hazardous-material inventories. - Finding
- CourtListener sweep: exact-name query '"USS Duffy"' (type=o) returned 0 results - no opinion naming this vessel located in the opinion index. The RECAP-docket leg for 'USS Duffy' and both 'DE-27' hull-number legs were submitted under the fleet-wide pacing budget and returned the 'momentarily spent' pacing status on spaced retries this session; final status of each query is recorded in the search_ledger rows sl-uss-duffy-de27-07 through -09. No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull located.

- Limitations
- The sweep covers indexed federal opinions and RECAP dockets only - it does not cover state-court records, asbestos trust claims, MDL-875 ancillary dockets not indexed to the name, or non-U.S. jurisdictions. 'Duffy' is a common surname - any future hit requires collision classification rather than automatic attribution, and 'DE-27' is a high-noise token (docket/page-number and star-pagination false positives expected, as on sibling DE sweeps). Query completion status is stated in the search ledger; unfinished legs are logged pending rather than retried into a throttle.

- Finding
- Era/design inference for a diesel-electric escort built at Mare Island Navy Yard in 1942-43: the GMT machinery plant - four General Motors 16-278A diesel engines with tandem electric drive, 2 shafts, 6,000 shp - has NO propulsion boilers and no steam system (BuShips design table lists 'Boilers: None' for GMT), so the heavy steam-ship asbestos categories (boiler lagging, steam-line insulation) do not apply. Plausible period applications concentrate in diesel exhaust/muffler insulation, gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, deck coverings, accommodation insulation, and friction linings on deck machinery. Work-site context: builder Mare Island Navy Yard is a documented Atlas yard (evidence tier 2; 1998 disposal/reuse EIS documents ACM in yard buildings and industrial waste; Collins v. Plant Insulation Co., 185 Cal. App. 4th 260 (2010) records a Mare Island worker's mesothelioma), and the November 1945 decommissioning site Hunters Point (San Francisco Naval Shipyard) is a documented Atlas yard (evidence tier 3; thermal insulation for piping and boilers, mechanical insulation, gaskets, fireproofing, electrical components, pipe lagging; Superfund-listed, EPA CA1170090087).

- Limitations
- Class/era and work-site inference only - not a ship-specific finding. The yard records document asbestos at the sites, not materials installed aboard this hull; the Mare Island litigation record (Collins, exposure 1976-1994) postdates this hull's construction by three decades, and the 1998 EIS documents closure-era building conditions. - Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no ACM survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, material-condition report, or litigation naming this hull was found in the public sources searched. No preservation-era documentation can exist - the hull was sold for scrapping in 1947 and never became a museum, memorial, or reserve-fleet asset; the commissioned career ran August 1943 to November 1945.
