- Finding
- LCI(L)-777 departed Portland 1944-08-19 for shakedown out of San Diego, arrived Pearl Harbor 1944-10-08, and was assigned Asiatic-Pacific Theater duty with LCI Flotilla Twenty-Two. On 1944-12-26 to -27 she salvaged the broached tank landing craft LCT-1035 at Aitape. She entered Lingayen Gulf in the initial assault 1945-01-09 (Operation Musketeer, Mike One, White Beach), pulled sister ship LCI(L)-987 off the beach, and salvaged 21 pontoon barges, a medium landing ship, an LCVP, and provided salvage assistance to seven LSTs; Commander, Task Unit 78.1.12 commended her for this work. She received the Navy Unit Commendation for service in the Salvage, Fire Fighting, and Rescue Unit, Service Force, Seventh Fleet, Philippine Islands area, 1945-01-06 to 1945-02-15, and was dry-docked 1945-07-04 to -06 before training troops of the Medical Division at Cebu.

- Locator
- DANFS entry, postwar reclassification and disposition section
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- LCI(L)-777 was decommissioned at Astoria, OR, 1946-05-29 and placed in reserve. Reclassified LSIL-777 on 1949-02-28. Nominated 1950-10-27 for conversion to an underwater mine locator ship; CNO scheduled LSIL-777 for conversion 1951-12-17; the ship was named Dunlin and reclassified AMCU-23 on 1952-03-07. The conversion was canceled 1954-01-22, and the ship reverted to Landing Ship, Infantry (Large) LSIL-777 on 1954-07-01. She was struck from the Naval Vessel Register 1956-09-18 and sunk as a target 1958-09-10.

- Limitations
- This is the controlling source for the batch's Dunlin/AMCU-23 identity determination: it documents the AMCU-23 conversion as scheduled, named, and then explicitly canceled before completion, with the hull reverting to LSIL-777 designation - confirming the AMCU-23 identity is a paper reclassification, not evidence of operational minehunter service, and that this hull never operated, was never crewed, and was never drydocked as an AMCU per the sources reviewed. Same live-fetch/503 limitation as ev-uss-dunlin-amcu23-01 applies. Contains no asbestos, materials, or condition information and supports no asbestos claim.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Battle-star count discrepancy: independent search-engine retrievals of what purports to be the same DANFS "LCI(L)-777" entry disagree - one retrieval stated the ship earned one battle star tied to her Navy Unit Commendation citation (Lingayen/Philippine Islands operations); a separate retrieval of the same purported entry stated two battle stars. This record does not adopt either figure as controlling.

- Limitations
- Neither battle-star figure is asserted as fact in this record; both retrievals otherwise agree on every other date and fact reviewed. Direct page rendering was not possible in this session (see ev-uss-dunlin-amcu23-01); resolving this requires a direct read of the primary DANFS page once site access allows it. No asbestos content.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Peer-reviewed historical scholarship documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during World War II, the era in which this LCI(L)-351-class hull was built (laid down June 1944), and that wartime demand drove unprecedented fleet-wide asbestos utilization across Navy and merchant construction generally.

- Population
- WWII shipyard workers and ship crews (era context)
- Limitations
- Program/era-level scholarly documentation of asbestos use in WWII shipbuilding generally - covers Navy and merchant construction policy broadly, not this hull, this class, diesel-powered small craft specifically, or the LCI(L)-351 type. Does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard this hull, nor quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation. Downgraded from class_or_era to context_only in this record because no LCI(L)-351-specific design or outfitting document (of the kind used for other Atlas records, e.g. the EC2-S-C1 engine manual) was located to connect this general scholarship to this vessel's actual machinery and outfit.

[5]CourtListener API v4 searches, 2026-09-23: opinion (type=o) and RECAP (type=r) full-text search for "USS Dunlin", "LCI(L)-777", "LSIL-777", "AMCU-23"; broader RECAP search for "Dunlin" + navy/asbestos terms [court_record]

- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- No qualifying asbestos or other litigation naming this hull was located. CourtListener API v4 searches (opinions and RECAP dockets) for "USS Dunlin," "LCI(L)-777," "LSIL-777," and "AMCU-23" returned zero results. A broader search for "Dunlin" combined with "navy"/"asbestos" returned six RECAP hits, all reviewed and classified as name collisions - large multi-party dockets (a Superfund nuisance case, a tribal land dispute, bankruptcy claims registers, a commercial arbitration matter) in which "Dunlin" appears incidentally (e.g., as a street name, an unrelated party, or in a large creditor/exhibit list) and not as a reference to this vessel.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located case does not prove no claim was ever filed - CourtListener/RECAP coverage of pre-electronic-filing-era state and federal asbestos dockets is incomplete, and a landing-craft hull with no ship-specific asbestos documentation is an unlikely target for a hull-specific pleading in the first place. Establishes only that this specific search, on this date, found nothing.

[6]Batch-1652 search ledger (this record): NHHC DANFS entries for LCI(L)-777 and Dunlin II (LSIL-777); CourtListener API v4 opinion and RECAP searches [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-dunlin-amcu23-01 through sl-uss-dunlin-amcu23-09
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No ship-specific or class-specific (LCI(L)-351-type) asbestos record was located in this research pass: no Navy design/operating manual, hazard survey, abatement record, or hazmat disclosure naming this hull, its class, or either the Dunlin or AMCU-23 identity was found in the official/authoritative sources searched (NHHC DANFS, and CourtListener as above). This is consistent with the vessel's disposal history: LCI(L)-777 was struck from the Naval Vessel Register in 1956 and sunk as a target in 1958, decades before modern asbestos regulation, ship-preservation hazmat surveys, or litigation discovery practices existed that would have generated such a record.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard the vessel during her service life - it establishes only that no such record surfaced in this search. Does not establish that asbestos was or was not present, nor establish or defeat any claim of individual exposure, quantity, condition, or legal eligibility.
