- NavSource timeline for this hull: laid down 20 October 1942 by the Leathem D. Smith Shipbuilding Co., Sturgeon Bay, WI; launched 16 January 1943; commissioned USS PC-1260 24 April 1943; arrived Pearl Harbor 16 July 1944; damaged in collision with Kenmore (AK-221) 12 November 1944; reclassified Control Submarine Chaser PCC-1260 20 August 1945; decommissioned 12 April 1946 and laid up Pacific Reserve Fleet, Columbia River Group, Astoria, OR; named Durango 15 February 1956; struck from the Navy Register in 1959. Specifications: 280 t light / 450 t full; 173'8" x 23' x 10'10"; 20 kts; complement 65; two 1,440 bhp Fairbanks Morse 38D8 1/8 diesels, Westinghouse single-reduction gear, two shafts. CO: LTJG A. D. Bradbury, USNR, 1945. NavSource also quotes the Naval Vessel Register of 1 January 1949 (reserve-fleet plan as of January 1947) and states no DANFS history exists for this vessel.

- Leathem D. Smith construction trades 1942-43; wartime crew (design complement 65)
- Limitations
- Photographic-archive compilation, not a primary registry - dates and specifications are consistent across corroborating sources (shipbuildinghistory, NavalCoverMuseum) but NavSource itself gives no strike month and lists 'Fate unknown' in the timeline text despite hosting the 2012 wreck photographs. Contains no asbestos or materials information.

- Finding
- Contemporaneous primary record naming this hull: the Kenmore war diary documents that at 0420 on 12 November 1944, maneuvering off the western coast of Angaur Island (Palau), Kenmore collided with a small patrol craft identified at 0427 as 'U.S.S. PC 1260'. PC-1260 was 'holed in midship engine room area - hole was wedge shape extending about three feet into main deck, and reaching about four feet below the waterline. Taking water slowly in engine room.' PC-1260 radioed the screen commander that she was abandoning ship; Kenmore's LCVP embarked seventeen enlisted personnel of PC-1260; USS Wintle (DE-25) came alongside to render assistance. 'No personnel casualties. Craft not seriously damaged.' The diary further records a formal investigation of the collision held 25-29 November 1944 with Captain M. H. Anderson, USNR, as senior investigating officer.

- Limitations
- Documents a wartime casualty event to this hull, including damage into the engine-room space; contains no asbestos or materials information - the engine-room location of the hole is a construction fact, not an exposure finding. Transcription is from the scanned diary page (read 2026-10-03); the escort is read as 'Wintle (DE-25)' from a partially hand-corrected typed entry.

- Finding
- This hull's present disposition documented photographically: on 17 July 2012 the former PC-1260 was photographed 'marginally afloat, being held in place by steel pilings set through the hull' in the Columbia River at Fairview, Oregon, a few miles upriver of Portland International Airport; identification was made from the raised weld-number outlines reading 'PC 1260' on the stern. NavalCoverMuseum reports the hull still visible in Google Maps satellite view as of 2024, just west of Sundial Beach.

- Limitations
- Identification rests on the photographed stern weld-number outlines plus satellite visibility - credible but not a surveyed/official registry record; no federal or Oregon state document naming this hull in the abandoned/derelict vessel program was located. Documents location and custody only - not condition, materials, or any hazmat status.

- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Builder-yard record for this hull: PC-1260 is yard hull number 288 in the Leathem D. Smith Shipbuilding production table, a 284-ton 174-ft Navy subchaser delivered/commissioned 24 April 1943, 'later Durango 1956, struck 1959' - consistent with the NavSource timeline. The yard genealogy records Leathem D. Smith Shipbuilding reorganized as Christy Corp. (1947) and absorbed into Bay Shipbuilding (1968).

[8]U.S. Naval Institute, Naval History Magazine, 'Historic Fleets' (February 1996): PC-461-class program history [other_primary]
- Locator
- USNI Naval History 'Historic Fleets' Feb 1996 (class program); NavSource specifications block (diesel plant)
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era/class inference: a PC-461-class submarine chaser built 1942-43 to the standard 173-ft steel design (one of 403 ordered; 15 yards in the program; 35 completed as amphibious control craft) with a diesel propulsion plant - two Fairbanks Morse diesels, no boilers or steam system - would have carried era-standard asbestos applications appropriate to a diesel patrol craft: exhaust and machinery insulation, gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, brake linings on winches and windlass, and deck coverings - but no boiler or steam-line lagging.

- Population
- Leathem D. Smith construction trades 1942-43; wartime crew
- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. No material survey of PC-1260 exists in located records; the diesel plant means the largest asbestos categories of steam ships do not apply. Does not quantify material or establish any individual's exposure. The wreck's survival unmodified since 1946 means era materials may persist aboard undocumented.

[9]Batch-7755 search ledger (this record): NHHC/DANFS (no entry exists); NavSource; NavalCoverMuseum; NARA catalog; shipbuildinghistory; Oregon DSL/OSMB abandoned-derelict-vessel program pages; CourtListener API v4 via fleet helper (throttled - see search_ledger) [other_primary]

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for PC-1260 in the sources searched: no hull ACM survey, no abatement contract, no museum or regulatory hazmat disclosure (including any Oregon ADV-program record for the derelict hull). The CourtListener litigation sweep is INCOMPLETE - the fleet helper refused all requests on a fleet-wide quota throttle (see sl-09); logged as blocked, not as a negative litigation result.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the hull survives unrestored and unsurveyed, and era materials could persist in place. Does not establish that asbestos is or is not present; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility. Litigation coverage specifically is an open gap, not a cleared search.
