- DANFS record for this hull: launched 10 June 1944 by American Shipbuilding Co., Lorain, Ohio; commissioned 23 November 1944, Lieutenant F. A. Fitton, USNR, in command. Sailed through the Saint Lawrence to outfit at Boston and train off the Virginia Capes; arrived New London 15 March 1945 and escorted the Italian submarine Dandolo to Guantanamo Bay; continued to San Diego, arriving 7 April; underway 23 April via Pearl Harbor, Eniwetok, Guam, and Saipan, arriving Okinawa 10 June escorting a convoy; escorted ships and patrolled off Okinawa until war's end; swept a channel into Jinsen as an avenue for the occupation of Korea; entered Sasebo 10 September for sweeping operations, including supervising Japanese minesweepers; departed 28 December 1945, arriving San Pedro 8 February [1946]; went out of commission into reserve 27 September 1946; reclassified MSF-224 on 7 February 1955; received one battle star for WWII service. Spec block: dp. 530; l. 184'6"; b. 33'; dr. 9'9"; s. 15 k.; cpl. 104; a. 1 x 3"; cl. Admirable.

- Population
- American Ship Building construction trades 1943-44; wartime crew (design complement 104)
- Limitations
- DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. DANFS does not print a laid-down date (29 December 1943 rests on NAVSHIPS 250-011 and NavSource); the striking and disposal dates (1 May 1962 strike, 2 October 1962 Mexico transfer) appear only in a bracketed transcriber's note on the transcription mirror, not in the DANFS text proper. The hazegray-family transcription carries a typo - 'Lorian' for Lorain - noted, not carried. Live NHHC page 404s (standing batch-01 defect); Internet Archive was temporarily offline during the capture check on 2026-09-22, so no archived NHHC URL could be confirmed.

- Finding
- The official 1945 BuShips register names EAGER, official number AM224, in the mine-sweeper tables: builder American S. B. Co., Lorain, Ohio; keel laid 29 December 1943; launched 10 June 1944; date of first commission 23 November 1944; engine manufacturer/model 'C. B. GSB-8' (Cooper Bessemer GSB-8), shaft horsepower 1,710, 'Nat. Sup.' (National Supply Co.) single reduction gear. The AM214-311 class characteristics block prints: 2 propellers, geared 'Diesel' drive with single reduction gears; length 184'6" o.a., 180'0" w.l.; extreme beam 33'0"; trial displacement 850 tons, 945 tons at limiting draft; limiting/max navigational draft 9'9"; trial speed 14.8 knots; total accommodations 11 officers + 93 enlisted; armament 1 x 3"/50 cal. D.P. and 2 twin 40mm A.A. mounts.

- American Ship Building construction trades 1943-44; wartime crew
- Limitations
- Contemporaneous official register - establishes identity, builder, construction dates, and propulsion for this hull; contains no materials or asbestos information. The class block prints geared 'Diesel' drive for AM214-311, not diesel-electric - secondary summaries conflict: the HyperWar data card prints 'diesel-electric engines, twin screws, 1,800 h.p.' and Wikipedia's infobox prints 'ALCO 539 / Farrel-Birmingham' (the Willamette-built AM136-165 group's plant, not this Lorain-built hull's). The official table is carried and the conflict logged in gaps. The 1,710 figure is the class-table shaft-horsepower entry and is not labeled per-engine or aggregate. OCR noise in the scanned table does not affect the row's substance.

- NavSource archive record for this hull: laid down 29 December 1943 by the American Ship Building Co., Lorain, OH; launched 10 June 1944; commissioned USS Eager (AM 224) on 23 November 1944; the Naval Vessel Register of 1 January 1949 lists her with a planned December 1945 decommissioning and reserve placement (actual decommissioning was 27 September 1946 at San Pedro, CA); reclassified fleet minesweeper (steel hull) MSF-224 on 7 February 1955; struck from the Naval Register 1 May 1962; transferred to Mexico 2 October 1962 and renamed ARM DM-06; struck from the Mexican Navy list in 1986; fate unknown. Commanding officers: LT Frank Albert Fitton, USNR (23 November 1944 - 2 October 1945); LT Richard Robert Gwathemy, USNR (2 October 1945); LT Lowell Wilson Knoop, USNR (6 December 1945); LTJG Clarence Evan Smith, USNR (20 April 1946); ENS Francis George Crawford, USN (26 July - 27 September 1946). Spec block (945 t. fl; 184'6" x 33' x 9'9"; 14.8 kts; complement 104; 1 x 3"/50 DP, one twin 40mm, six 20mm, hedgehog, four K-guns, two depth-charge tracks; two Cooper Bessemer GSB-8 diesels, National Supply Co. single reduction gear, two shafts) is consistent with the official NAVSHIPS table where they overlap.

- Limitations
- Private photo/data archive, not an official source: the disposal details (Naval Register strike 1 May 1962; Mexico transfer 2 October 1962 as ARM DM-06; Mexican strike 1986; 'fate unknown'), the NVR 1 January 1949 reserve-listing note, and the CO roster rest on a secondary compilation - consistent with DANFS and NAVSHIPS where they overlap but not independently corroborated by an official source. The DANFS transcriber's note on the transcription mirror corroborates the strike and transfer dates. No materials or asbestos content.

- Finding
- GAO documented the Navy's asbestos-protection program and its 1975/1979 insulation-removal policies covering the WWII-built fleet - program-level confirmation that Navy ship construction of Eager's era incorporated asbestos insulation and that the material was managed as a known hazard aboard Navy vessels.

- Limitations
- Program-level documentation, not hull-specific; establishes era context for WWII Navy construction, not materials aboard AM-224 - which left active service in September 1946 and was transferred out of U.S. custody in 1962, before the Navy's documented asbestos-management program existed. Does not establish individual exposure, quantities, or presence at any time. Full text not retrieved (gao.gov blocks automated fetch, HTTP 403) - content via product-page description.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming USS Eager under AM-224, MSF-224, or ARM DM-06 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The CourtListener authenticated API sweep could not be completed on 2026-09-22 (shared 2,800/day quota exhausted, HTTP 429; the web UI returned 403 to automated fetch); web-index spot checks surfaced only name collisions and law-firm marketing listicles that name the vessel without evidence.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the hull was built 1943-44 during the documented era of Navy asbestos use, and its post-1946 life was reserve-fleet lay-up followed by foreign transfer, for which no survey, sale-condition, or disposal record was located. Does not establish that asbestos is or was not present; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility. CourtListener sweep remains open - logged as a gap, not a clean negative.
