[3]U.S.S. Earl V. Johnson (DE-702) ship-authored records: War History cover letter to Secretary of the Navy, serial 220, dated 29 Sep 1945 (received stamp, Navy Dept. Office of Public Relations, 18 Oct 1945); War Diary cover letter to Commander-in-Chief U.S. Fleet, serial 256, dated 17 Nov 1945, covering Sep-Oct 1945 (scan hosted by NavSource Online Destroyer Escort Photo Archive) [other_primary]
- Locator
- NavSource DE-702 page, 'official War History' scan (06702wh.jpg)
- Finding type

- Finding
- The ship's own war-diary submissions document the occupation period day by day: arrived Buckner Bay, Okinawa Shima, 4 Sep 1945 (where Cdr. Jules J. Jordy, 75286 USNR, was relieved by Lt. Cmdr. James H. McGlothlin as commanding officer); underway 6 Sep for Hagushi Anchorage; escorted T.U. 78.1.18 to Jinsen Ko, Korea, 11-13 Sep; sank a floating mine by small-arms fire at 35-13N 125-08E and fired on a derelict junk on 14 Sep; anchored Jinsen Ko 15-25 Sep performing pilot duties escorting incoming vessels from the outer sea buoy into the inner anchorage.

- Limitations
- Scan covers only the two cover letters and the Sep-Oct 1945 diary extract - the enclosure (the ship's full war-history narrative, enclosure A to serial 220) is not part of the image. Operational record only; contains no materials, maintenance, or asbestos information. NavSource hosts the scan; the documents themselves are ship-authored Navy records.

[4]Bureau of Ships, Ships' Data, U.S. Naval Vessels, Vol. 1 (Jan 1945), DE design-group table (shipscribe.com scan) + navypedia 'Buckley (TE) class' per-block boiler-vendor map [other_primary]

- SDB1945v1 pp. 234-235 design-group table; navypedia us_de_te block map (Defoe block DE-693-DE-705)
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era/design inference for this hull's plant type: the Buckley TE design is one of only two DE classes with a full steam plant - per the BuShips design-group table, two 'D' express-type boilers at 435 psi/750F superheat feeding GE steam turbine-generators and electric propulsion motors at 12,000 shp on two shafts. The navypedia block map assigns Combustion Engineering boilers to the Defoe-built block DE-693 through DE-705, which includes this hull. For a 1943-44 steam-plant escort, era-standard asbestos applications were boiler and fireroom insulation, steam-line and turbine lagging, valve and flange gaskets, machinery packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings.

- Construction trades (Defoe, Bay City, 1943-44; Todd Johnson yard, Algiers, fitting-out 1944); crew 1944-1946
- Limitations
- Class/design inference only - neither source names this hull's insulation materials and no member-level asbestos record was located. Establishes no quantity, no crew exposure, and no present-day content. The boiler-vendor attribution (Combustion Engineering) rests on navypedia's block map, a secondary compilation.

- Locator
- GAO product page HRD-80-2 (full text blocks automated fetch, HTTP 403; content via product-page description)
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO documented the Navy's asbestos-protection posture: standing policy (1975) removed asbestos insulation only when damaged or required for repairs, modified 1979 toward selective replacement in high-maintenance areas - i.e., original-era insulation typically remained aboard for decades unless a yard period disturbed it.

- Population
- Navy shipyard workers; asbestos program review
- Limitations
- Program-level documentation predating any applicability to this hull - DE-702 was stricken 1 May 1967 and scrapped in 1968, before the documented inspection/replacement regime could have touched her. Context for the era only; says nothing about this specific ship.

- cl-auth-search.py authenticated queries, 2026-09-29; see search_ledger sl-04 through sl-06

- Finding
- No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull located. Opinion index: 65 hits for "Earl V. Johnson" - all name collisions (prisoner cases captioned Earl v. Johnson / Earl v. Johnson & Johnson, N.D. Tex./5th Cir.; and Alabama appellate cases where attorney Earl V. Johnson of Andalusia appears as counsel). 3 hits for "DE-702" - all numeric collisions (bankruptcy and contract citations). RECAP docket index: 20 hits for "Earl V. Johnson" - all collisions (TDCJ prisoner suits, Johnson & Johnson talcum-powder MDL remand orders, attorney-name hits); "DE-702" docket query returned a criminal-case collision (United States v. Maldonado, E.D. Ark. 4:11-cr-00129) before output truncation; repeat attempts to capture the full page were paced out by the fleet budget.

- Limitations
- CourtListener indexes published opinions and RECAP dockets - state-court complaints and unindexed federal filings are not covered, so absence from CL does not prove no filing ever named the hull. A common personal name produces heavy collision noise; hull-level attribution was checked on every returned caption.

- nmgl.org feature article reproducing the July 1945 Inland Seas account
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Contemporaneous July 1945 account of the builder yard: Defoe Shipbuilding on the Saginaw River at Bay City turned out destroyer escorts by quantity production using its 'roll-over' method (hulls built upside down and rotated upright for downhand welding); completed DEs transited the Great Lakes-Chicago-Illinois-Mississippi route to New Orleans for commissioning - consistent with NavSource's record of this hull commissioning at Todd Johnson Shipyard, Algiers, La.
