DANFS record for this hull: launched 14 September 1940 by Bath Iron Works Corp., Bath, Maine; sponsored by Miss Mildred Eberle, granddaughter of Rear Admiral Edward Walter Eberle (CNO 1923-1927); commissioned 4 December 1940, Lt. Comdr. E. R. Gardner, Jr. in command. Caribbean/east-coast training; Bermuda neutrality patrol to end of August 1941; convoy escort to Newfoundland, Iceland, and northern bases (reaching Scotland once). Norfolk 23 August-8 October 1942 tanker/convoy escort (Galveston, Cristobal, Trinidad-Belem). Sortied 25 October 1942 for the North Africa invasion; bombardment and fire support at Mehedia, French Morocco, 8 November. South Atlantic patrol from Recife, Brazil, from 26 December; 10 March 1943 intercepted German blockade runner Karin - demolition charges killed half the 14-man boarding party outright; the remaining seven attempted salvage until fire and further explosions forced abandonment; 72 prisoners recovered. Charleston overhaul; five North African convoy voyages 13 April 1943-31 January 1944; Oran 22 February; Naples base for patrol/bombardment 11 March-May (Anzio support); 20 April broke up a German E-boat attack on the transport anchorage, sinking one and damaging three (subsequently beached). Sailed from Malta 13 August 1944 for the southern France invasion (15 August); 21 August bombarded Ile de Porquerolles until surrender (58 POWs, 14 more the next day). New York 6 November 1944; two Oran convoys by April 1945; after overhaul and training sailed from New York 8 June for the Pacific - Pearl Harbor 20 July, plane guard with Antietam (CV-36); Alaskan waters from 1 November; Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka, 1-5 December; Pearl Harbor 15 December. Charleston 8 February 1946; out of commission in reserve 3 June 1946; assigned 12 August to the Naval Reserve Training program (transcription reads 'the Hd Naval District' - OCR garble, almost certainly '3d'; ship was towed to New York); towed to New York September; in-service 13 January 1947 with Naval Reserve cruises to Canada, the Caribbean, and Bermuda; in commission in reserve 19 May 1950; full commission 21 November 1950; arrived Boston 21 January 1951, decommissioned the following day and transferred to Greece under the Mutual Defense Assistance Program, serving as Niki. Three battle stars for WWII.

    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. DANFS's spec block labels this hull 'cl. Benson' - the Benson/Gleaves subclass boundary differs across references (modern sources carry DD-430 as Gleaves-class); discrepancy carried in gaps. Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404; laid-down date is not stated in this entry.

    Limitations
Secondary photographic-archive compilation transcribing official data - corroborates DANFS dates and adds the laid-down and stricken dates DANFS omits. Its 'General Electric turbines' attribution for this hull conflicts with class-level data naming Westinghouse (DD-423) and BuShips' Bethlehem row for DD-421 - per-hull turbine builder unresolved, carried in gaps. Documents no asbestos content.

Veterans-association record for this hull: Gleaves class; call sign NIBD; transferred to Greece 22 January 1951 as NIKI (D-65); rerated as escort in 1970; broken up 1974. The 1999 ship history corroborates DANFS operational detail: first US convoy-escort task unit TU 4.1.1 (with Ericsson DD-440, Dallas DD-199, Upshur DD-144, Ellis DD-154) picking up a 44-ship convoy east of Nova Scotia 17 September 1941; rescue of the 63-man crew of burning freighter SS Nigaristan 24-25 September; Northern Attack Group TF 34 antiaircraft duty with Hambleton (DD-455) and Macomb (DD-458) at Mehdia, silencing a shore battery shelling Green Beach on 8 November 1942; Karin boarding party of 14 with half killed by scuttling charges; Anzio support and the 20 April 1944 E-boat engagement; Ile de Porquerolles surrender 21 August 1944 (72 Germans captured).

    Limitations
Veterans-association history - reputable secondary source consistent with DANFS. Its 'Decommissioned Date: 01/24/1947' data field conflicts with the DANFS sequence (out of commission 3 June 1946; in-service 13 January 1947) and appears to conflate the 24 January 1951 striking date - discrepancy carried in gaps. Greek disposal reads 'broken up 1974' vs NavSource 'scrapped 1972' - carried in gaps. No asbestos content.

    Finding
Era/yard inference: a Gleaves-subclass destroyer built 1939-40 with four superheated boilers (Babcock & Wilcox per class machinery data; 575 psi/700 F per BuShips Ships' Data 1945 for the class) and a 50,000-shp geared-turbine plant falls inside the Navy's peak asbestos era - period-standard applications were boiler and steam-line insulation, turbine lagging, valve and flange gaskets, machinery packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings. Builder Bath Iron Works is documented at yard level in the Atlas dataset (tier 2), including a 1942 industrial-hygiene study documenting 'fairly serious dust risk' in its pipe-covering shop and 1987 OSHA asbestos citations; NARA RG 19 'General Information Books' per-vessel material specifications are an archival lead for hull-level specs.

    Limitations
Class/era and builder-yard inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. The 1942 yard study documents yard working conditions (postdating this hull's fitting-out window, which closed at commissioning December 1940), not materials aboard DD-430; no hull material schedule was located. Does not quantify material or establish any individual's exposure.

    Finding
Archival lead for hull-level records: NARA's 'Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships and Stations' series (NAID 594258) holds Navy deck logs covering this hull's commissioned periods; ship-specific deck logs, war diaries, and action reports (e.g., the 10 March 1943 Karin boarding action and 24-25 September 1941 Nigaristan rescue referenced in the Tin Can Sailors history 'according to the ship's action report') are primary sources from which shipyard availabilities and aboard-ship conditions could be developed. No digitized file unit was enumerated for DD-430 in this pass - the catalog search interface is JavaScript-rendered and did not return result lists to automated fetch.

No qualifying ship-specific record located for DD-430: CourtListener exact-name queries ("USS Eberle"/"U.S.S. Eberle"/"aboard the Eberle", opinion index; "USS Eberle"/"U.S.S. Eberle", RECAP docket index) returned ZERO hits, and the 11 RECAP hits on hull number "DD-430" are all name collisions - unrelated patent, trademark, employment, Medicare, FLSA, civil-rights, and bankruptcy dockets in which the token appears in non-vessel context; none is asbestos litigation. No asbestos survey, abatement contract, museum hazmat disclosure, HAER survey, or VA Board of Veterans' Appeals decision naming this hull was located in the public sources searched.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1939-40 steam destroyer sits inside the Navy's peak asbestos era and the era inference stands on its own. Does not establish that asbestos is or is not present aboard, and does not establish or defeat any individual claim of exposure or legal eligibility. CourtListener covers indexed federal/state opinions and PACER dockets - unindexed filings, state-court complaints without RECAP capture, and trust claims are outside its coverage.
