Documented for this hull (DANFS spec block: YN-10: dp. 560; l. 163'2"; b. 30'6"; dr. 11'8"; s. 12 k.; cpl. 48; a. 1 3"; cl. Aloe): 'Ebony (YN-10) was launched 3 June 1941 by General Engineering and Dry Dock Co. Alameda, Calif.; sponsored by Mrs. Clara Valtey; placed in service 16 September 1941 for duty in the 12th Naval District; and commissioned 22 May 1942, Ensign S. Bernsen, USNR, in command. She was reclassified AN-15, 20 January 1944. Ebony sailed from San Francisco 24 May 1942 for the South Pacific. After a brief period in the Fiji Islands, she arrived at Auckland, New Zealand, 27 July, to serve as net gate tender. She sailed to Noumea in January 1943 to assist in towing a stranded vessel to safety and remained until May to salvage Shaw (DD-373). Ebony continued her net tending in the South Pacific, basing primarily at Noumea and Espiritu Santo, until the end of the war. She returned to San Pedro, Calif., 8 October 1945, and was placed out of commission in reserve at Astoria, Oreg., 23 March 1946.'

NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry. Its strike/disposition fields are blank ('date unknown', 'fate unknown') - the 1962 strike and 1976 MARAD sale are supplied by shipscribe (ev-03), and a laid-down conflict (5 vs 12 Dec 1940) is in gaps. Specification set conflicts with the DANFS spec block on displacement and speed (see gaps). Contains no asbestos content.

Class notes: 32 net tenders (YN 1-32) directed 3 Jul 1940 under the FY1941 program for harbor/anchorage net defenses; General Board propulsion design of Mar 1940 specified a 1,000 SHP diesel-electric installation with two electric units serving a single propeller, rated 800 SHP as fitted; all YNs reclassified AN effective 20 Jan 44.

    Limitations
Authoritative secondary compilation drawn from official ship-record sources (Ships' Data U.S. Naval Vessels, MARAD disposal records); not itself a government record. Its laid-down date (12 Dec 1940) conflicts with NavSource (5 Dec 1940) - carried in gaps. The strike date (1 Sep 62) it supplies is consistent with Wikipedia's 'stricken 1 September 1962' and resolves NavSource's 'unknown'. shipbuildinghistory.com's 'To NDRF 1946' for this hull conflicts with shipscribe's 'USN reserve 1946-61 / to NDRF 29 Jun 61' - shipscribe's detailed note carried, variance in gaps. No asbestos content.

    asbestos_application
    Finding
A diesel-electric net tender built 1940-41 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel-driven vessel of this period were thermal insulation, engine and exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and brake linings on deck machinery (the net-handling winch and 12-ton boom were her principal load-bearing gear). As a diesel-electric vessel she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

No quantity. Product names are normalized era terms; no manufacturer attribution for this hull. A BuShips machinery manifest for this hull, if it survives in NARA RG 19, is an open archival lead.

    Finding
NARA's Special List 44 inventories logbooks for 'Ebony (YN-10, AN-15)' covering 5/22/1942 - 6/30/1945: the commissioning day through mid-1945. Surviving-log dates only - the inventory does not cover the in-service period (Sep 1941 - May 1942), the war's-end return (Jul-Oct 1945), or decommissioning (Mar 1946). Logs are held in RG 24 Entry 118 at Archives II, College Park; a Google-indexed check of catalog.archives.gov returned only name collisions - no digitized deck logs for this hull located.

    Finding
This hull's builder is a documented WWII small-warship yard: the General Engineering & Dry Dock Company yard on Clement Avenue, Alameda - a commercial yard whose site was developed in 1917 as the Barnes & Tibbitts shipyard, bought by GE&DD in 1922, and entirely rebuilt in 1940 with U.S. Maritime Commission financial assistance (dry dock plus ~30 new shops/warehouses/offices). GE&DD 'built small warships for the U.S. Navy under Contract NObs-344' as the first of two sites that became the Naval Industrial Reserve Shipyard Alameda; the company kept the yard open until 1948 and the site is now the Alameda Marina.

Yard-history documentation, not a hull record: establishes that the builder named by DANFS existed, held a documented Navy small-warship contract covering this build era, and occupied a documented site. The sources describe the yard, not this vessel specifically; no asbestos content. GE&DD is not an Atlas shipyards.json entry (37 yards checked); Todd Shipyards Alameda is a different physical site and era - no cross-link made.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS Ebony (YN-10/AN-15) was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener name queries ('USS Ebony', opinion and docket) returned zero results; the hull-number queries ('YN-10' OR 'AN-15', opinion and docket) could not be completed - the fleet-wide pacer returned a budget-spent stand-down on each attempt, logged as blocked, not a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case naming this hull and no net-tender/sister-ship litigation; asbestos content touching auxiliaries of this era is law-firm marketing material (navyshipexposure.com advertises a 2,414-ship list and '651 BUSHIPS equipment manifests') - excluded by source policy.

Deck logs (NARA RG 24), any BuShips machinery manifest (RG 19), and the 1976 MARAD sale/dismantling record are undigitized leads.
