NPS NHL nomination record for this hull: thirteenth of 18 Forrest Sherman-class destroyers; laid down 3 December 1956 at the Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine; launched 4 January 1958; commissioned 7 November 1958; four Babcock & Wilcox boilers feeding Westinghouse steam turbines rated 70,000 shaft horsepower, 33 knots; served as training ship for the Surface Warfare Officers School at Newport 1977-1988; decommissioned as the last all-gun destroyer in the U.S. Navy; 'essentially the same vessel laid down in 1956' with high integrity of original equipment.

Bath Iron Works construction trades 1956-58; crew 1958-88; Intrepid museum visitors 1989-2004
    Limitations
NPS nomination documents significance, machinery, and circa-1989 condition - not asbestos content. 'Essentially the same vessel' is an integrity statement, not a hazmat survey. The nomination predates the Intrepid display period's end and the 2012 Bay City relocation.

    Limitations
Post-decommissioning dates are drawn from secondary vessel-history pages corroborated by contemporaneous press (ev-03); the live NHHC DANFS page returns 404 and no full DANFS narrative for DD-946 was retrievable - the NHL nomination is the primary record. 4. [4]NPS NHL nomination machinery block (Forrest Sherman class; four 1,200-psi B&W boilers, Westinghouse turbines, 70,000 shp) + Atlas shipyard dataset, Bath Iron Works record (era asbestos-documented yard) [other_primary]
    Locator
    NPS nomination description/integrity sections; shipyards.json 'bath-iron-works'
    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
Era/yard inference: a Forrest Sherman-class destroyer built 1956-58 with a four-boiler 1,200-psi steam plant would have carried period-standard asbestos boiler/turbine insulation, steam-line lagging, gaskets, packing, and fireproofing; builder Bath Iron Works is documented at yard level in the Atlas dataset ('bath-iron-works'). The nomination's 'essentially the same vessel laid down in 1956' integrity finding is consistent with retained original materials but is not a hazmat statement.

    Finding
Qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull, resolved from index lead to retrieved documents on authenticated backfill. Mullinex (E.D. Va.): the Joint Proposed Final Amended Pretrial Order carries a STIPULATION OF UNDISPUTED FACTS - 'Herbert Mullinex served onboard U.S.S. Edson from April 10, 1977 to until February 1, 1981 as a Machinist Mate First Class (MM1)' and 'Herbert Mullinex was diagnosed with mesothelioma'; the parties' factual contentions assert he 'was routinely and frequently exposed to and breathed uncontrolled asbestos dust and fibers from the intended use and removal of asbestos gaskets and packing manufactured by John Crane, Garlock and Chesterton' aboard Holder, Sumner, and (until 10/28/1978) Edson. The earlier opposition brief (doc. 130) recites deposition exhibits: Edson's forward and aft engine rooms had 12-15 machinist mates whose work included 'regular and frequent fabrication, installation, and removal of asbestos gaskets as well as cutting, installing, and removing asbestos packing,' ~6 valves/week yielding up to 24 gaskets. Hayden (E.D. La.): Order & Reasons granting remand recites Hayden's 5/28/2015 deposition describing asbestos-dust exposure aboard USS EDSON from Carrier/Buffalo Pumps 'force draft blowers' - while noting plaintiffs expressly disclaimed Navy-service exposure claims. Four additional complaints: Davis (N.D. Cal.) - EDSON (DD-946), electrician's mate, Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity Newport RI 1983-85, ABT switches and gun mounts; Gotautis (N.D. Cal.) - EDSON (DD-946) boilermaker supervisor 6/1962-9/1966 incl. WestPac/Vietnam; Hilt (N.D. Cal.) - EDSON in Hunters Point NSY work list 1965-72; Knowles (C.D. Cal.) - 'USS Edson (DD-946)' in exposure history sheet.

    Population
Herbert Mullinex (MM1 engine rooms, DD-946 1977-81; mesothelioma); Thomas Hayden (force-draft blowers); plaintiffs Davis (electrician 1983-85), Gotautis (boilermaker supervisor 1962-66), Hilt decedent Robert Hilt (Hunters Point 1965-72), Knowles (jobsite list)
    Limitations
Litigation-stage discipline applied: the pretrial-order stipulation establishes Mullinex's service aboard DD-946 and his mesothelioma diagnosis as undisputed facts, but the asbestos-exposure narrative is carried as the parties' CONTENTIONS and deposition recitals in briefing - not an adjudicated finding of exposure, product identity, or causation aboard this hull. Hayden's deposition recital is undercut for claim purposes by plaintiffs' express disclaimer of Navy exposure. The four complaints are unadjudicated pleading-stage allegations. No verdict, adjudicated exposure finding, or ACM inventory established.

    Finding
No asbestos survey, abatement contract, museum hazmat disclosure, or adjudicated/trial-stage litigation record for this hull was located (see search_ledger). Ship-specific litigation now documented at ev-05 following the 2026-09-25 authenticated backfill. Non-qualifying hits classified: Joppy v. United States (military pay); State of Maine v. 3M and State of Connecticut v. EIDP (environmental/PFAS suits - 'USS Edson' appears in appendix material, context beyond docket metadata unverified, not asbestos matters); Rio Grande Comm. Health, Abella v. Simon, US v. Anderson (D. Colo.), State of Washington v. Dept. of State = identifier/name collisions.

    Limitations
Absence of a located survey or adjudicated record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the NHL-documented high originality of the vessel is consistent with retained era materials. Litigation records are unadjudicated. Does not establish that asbestos is or is not present, does not address what may remain aboard, and does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
