Authoritative service history of this hull; contains no asbestos, insulation, or materials statement - supports identity, conversion, service, and reserve-fleet layup only. DANFS text predates the 1977 striking and 1980 sale and gives no decommission or strike date ('January 1947' Pacific Reserve Fleet placement only). Official Navy logistics history (Carter, 'Beans, Bullets and Black Oil,' Chapter XXVII, Logistics at Kerama Retto for the Okinawa Operation): on 27 March 1945 Task Group 51.6, the first salvage and repair facility, began operations at Kerama Retto 'with two fleet tugs, Yuma and Tekesta; 1 salvage tug, Clamp; and 1 landing-craft repair ship, Egeria,' established at the sheltered anchorage termed 'Cripple Creek' or 'Wiseman's Cove' to give emergency repairs to battle-damaged ships; her first job patched kamikaze-damaged destroyer Kimberly for return to Ulithi. Repair facilities were augmented 2 April by ARLs Endymion and Coronis and ARB Oceanus; facilities were soon overtaxed amid constant kamikaze threat. Egeria is also listed among Admiral Turner's repair ships at Kerama; 'Originally it was intended to use the Egeria and the landing ship dock Gunston Hall for repairs to boat-pool craft, but both had to be used' for heavier work.

Class/era inference for this diesel-powered LST-1-class hull converted to an Achelous-class ARL: no boilers - asbestos-relevant applications are GM diesel exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/crane brake linings; ARL conversions added interior-outfitting scope (tank-deck shops, deckhouses, enlarged accommodation spaces) of the type where era insulation products were applied. The documented Bethlehem-Key Highway conversion plus wartime repair operations aboard damaged vessels are the plausible installation/disturbance pathways; nothing ship-specific documents asbestos.

HAER documentation of sister Achelous-class hull USS Sphinx (ARL-24, ex LST-963) records the class conversion pattern: the LST tank deck divided into shops and storerooms (metals machine shop, electrical repair, metals shaping, welding area, wood shop, stores, offices), superstructure additions - the same conversion scope performed on this hull at Bethlehem-Key Highway. Full-text search of the 39-page HAER report found zero mentions of asbestos, insulation, or lagging - the class conversion record contains no asbestos statement.

Source discrepancies reconciled: (a) Decommission date - NavSource and shipscribe record 29 November 1946 (consistent with the NavSource CO table ending LTjg Black's command that day); DANFS and derivative sources (Wikipedia, uboat.net) state only 'January 1947' Pacific Reserve Fleet placement; the record adopts 29 November 1946 decommission with January 1947 reserve-fleet berthing. (b) Strike date - NavSource records 'date unknown'; the NVR detail record gives 10/01/1977 and shipscribe agrees (1 Oct 77). (c) Disposal date - Wikipedia's Achelous-class table states 'Sold for scrapping, 18 September 1973,' a documented defect (that date is sister ships Atlas/Endymion's disposal date per shipscribe); the MARAD card and NVR record award 29 May 1980 / status change 1 June 1980. (d) Reduced-commission dates - DANFS states 18 December 1943; shipscribe records the LST-136 ferry commission as 7 December 1943 - 17 January 1944 with full commission at New Orleans ~18 December 1943. (e) Reported kamikaze strike - the U.S. Navy Memorial Lost at Sea log for sister ship Achilles (ARL-41) records a kamikaze crashing into Egeria during the 12 November 1944 San Pedro Bay attacks; neither DANFS nor NavSource's Egeria entry mentions such a hit - carried as uncorroborated. (f) Complement - DANFS 255; shipscribe 253 (1944); NavSource 20 officers / 230 enlisted - reported per source, not merged.
