- DANFS record for this hull: '(AM-436: dp. 620; l. 172'; b. 36', dr. 10'; s. 16 k.; cpl. 74; a. 1 40mm.; cl. Agile)'. The second Energy was launched 13 February 1953 by J. M. Martinac Shipbuilding Co., Tacoma, Wash.; sponsored by Mrs. A. M. Baughman; commissioned 16 July 1954, LCDR F. H. Sonntag in command; reclassified MSO-436, 7 February 1955. Home port Long Beach from 3 August 1954; first WestPac tour 4 January - 15 June 1956 (large-scale exercise off Iwo Jima; training with Republic of Korea and Republic of China ships); thereafter sonar tests and schoolship duty for Thailand navy officers. Second Far East deployment 2 June 1958 - 6 January 1959: stood by at Taiwan during the renewed Communist shelling of Quemoy and Matsu; exercised with Chinese minesweepers. Mine-warfare exercises and fleet training through summer 1960; remainder of 1960 with the 7th Fleet in Far East waters. Transcriber's note: loaned to the Philippine Navy as Davao de Norte 5 July 1972; returned and stricken 1 July 1977.

- J. M. Martinac construction trades 1952-53; Navy crew 1954-1972 (design complement 74 per DANFS)
- Limitations
- DANFS documents identity, service history, and the design spec block - not materials or asbestos content, and establishes nothing about exposure aboard. The entry does not state a laid-down date (carried from the NavSource/NVR-compiled record, ev-02). DANFS spec block reads 'cl. Agile' while NavSource and standard references call this hull Aggressive-class - conflict carried in gaps. Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404 and hazegray.org no longer resolves.

- NavSource compiled record for this hull: laid down 3 March 1952 at J. M. Martinac Shipbuilding Co., Tacoma, Washington; decommissioned 5 July 1972 and loaned to the Republic of the Philippines the same day, renamed RPS Davao del Norte (PM 91); returned to U.S. custody and struck from the Navy Register 1 July 1977; sold for scrap 8 July 1977 to Ming Hing & Co., Kowloon, Hong Kong for $26,100. Spec block: displacement 630 t. light / 755 t. full load; length 172'; beam 35'; draft 10'; speed 14 kts; complement 80; armament as built one 40mm mount plus two .50 cal machine guns (final configuration: bow gun replaced by one twin 20mm mount). Propulsion: four Packard ID1700 diesel engines, two shafts, two controllable-pitch propellers. Photo archive documents the hull pre-launch at Martinac (National Archives photo) and off the coast of Vietnam c. April 1967 (photographed from USS Caliente AO-53) plus a 1968 U.S. Navy photo.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a standard compiled archival reference (transcribing NVR and official records) rather than an official publication; dates and disposal details corroborate across NavalCoverMuseum and Philippine maritime press. Spec figures differ from DANFS (630/755 t vs 620 t; 14 vs 16 kts; 80 vs 74 complement) - variance carried in gaps; DANFS values are carried in the record fields. Contains no asbestos or materials information.

[3]NavSource MSO-436 specifications block (diesel propulsion, construction-era data) + DANFS spec block (ev-01) - basis for plant-type era inference [other_primary]

- NavSource spec block 'Propulsion: Four Packard ID1700 diesel engines, two shafts, two controllable pitch propellers'; DANFS spec block
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era/class inference: a U.S. Navy ocean minesweeper built 1952-54 under Navy specifications of the peak asbestos-use era would have carried period-standard asbestos applications consistent with its diesel (non-steam) plant and wooden non-magnetic construction - exhaust-system lagging, engine-room and machinery insulation, gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, and deck/bulkhead materials. This hull had no boilers or steam piping, so the boiler/fireroom and steam-line lagging profile typical of steam combatants does not apply.

- Martinac construction trades 1952-54; Navy engineering crew 1954-72; Philippine Navy crew 1972-77; shipbreakers 1977
- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation schedule, survey, or material list was located for AM-436/MSO-436. The plant-type basis (four Packard diesels, no steam plant) is documented; the asbestos applications listed are era-typical, not ship-proven. Does not establish quantity, location, or present-day relevance (hull scrapped 1977).

- GAO product page HRD-80-2
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO documented the Navy's asbestos-protection program and its insulation-substitution/removal policies of the early-to-late 1970s, establishing that Navy ships built in the 1952-54 window - including this hull - were constructed during the documented peak-use era before substitution policies took effect.

- Limitations
- Program-level context only: the GAO report does not name this hull and does not establish materials aboard it; its yard fieldwork covered Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards, not J. M. Martinac. gao.gov returns HTTP 403 to automated fetches (standing issue); the product-page description is the basis, not full text.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or museum record exists for this hull (scrapped 1977, no preservation body), and no asbestos litigation naming USS Energy, AM-436, MSO-436, or RPS Davao del Norte was located in permitted sources. CourtListener could not be queried (API returned HTTP 429 - daily authenticated cap exhausted; web UI returned CloudFront 403) - the litigation sweep is incomplete, not negative (see search_ledger sl-uss-energy-am436-04).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the hull predates the Navy's insulation-substitution era and was scrapped in Hong Kong in 1977 with no documented hazmat handling. The blocked CourtListener sweep means litigation coverage is unknown rather than negative; re-run is the open task.

- Finding
- Hull-level material specifications for AM-436/MSO-436, if extant, would sit in NARA RG 19 General Information Books / Booklets of General Plans for the class, and service-era exposure documentation (overhaul reports, repair records) in RG 24 deck logs and yard correspondence. None of these were retrieved; the catalog API returned only the SPA shell at session time (see ledger sl-06).
