    Finding
DANFS entry 'USS Enterprise VII (CV-6)' documents this hull's history: launched 1936-10-03 by Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co., sponsored by Mrs. Claude A. Swanson; commissioned 1938-05-12 (Capt. N. H. White). Delivered Marine Fighting Squadron 211 to Wake Island 1941-12-02 and was en route to Hawaii during the Pearl Harbor attack; Marshall Islands raids 1942-02-01; escorted Hornet (CV-8) for the Doolittle Raid 1942-04-18; Battle of Midway June 1942; Eastern Solomons 1942-08-24 (3 direct hits, 4 near misses - 74 killed, 98 wounded); Santa Cruz 1942-10-26 (two bomb hits, 44 killed, 75 wounded); Naval Battle of Guadalcanal November 1942; first aircraft carrier awarded the Presidential Unit Citation (presented by Admiral Nimitz 1943-05-27); overhaul at Puget Sound Navy Yard from 1943-07-20; first night radar bombing attack from any U.S. carrier at Truk 1944-02-17; Philippine Sea, Leyte Gulf, Iwo Jima (aircraft aloft continuously for 174 hours), Okinawa; kamikaze hit 1945-05-14 (14 killed, 34 wounded - last combat wound); repairs at Puget Sound Navy Yard from 1945-06-07; Magic Carpet voyages repatriating more than 10,000 veterans; inactivated at New York Naval Shipyard 1946-01-18; decommissioned 1947-02-17; sold 1958-07-01. 20 battle stars, Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Commendation.

Crew across commission periods; Pearl Harbor, Puget Sound, and New York Naval Shipyard trades during documented repair/overhaul periods
    Limitations
Authoritative Navy history for milestones, combat record, and repair/overhaul yard periods; contains no asbestos or insulation-material content. Documents disturbance-relevant events (battle damage, yard repairs, 1943-44 Puget Sound overhaul) but the material scope of that work is not addressed. Does not establish exposure for any individual.

    Finding
NavSource spec block and disposition entries for CV-6: ordered 1933-08-03; laid down 1934-07-16 at Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Co.; launched 1936-10-03; commissioned 1938-05-12; decommissioned 1947-02-17; stricken 1956-10-02. Reclassified Attack Aircraft Carrier CVA-6 on 1952-10-01 and Antisubmarine Warfare Support Aircraft Carrier CVS-6 on 1953-08-08, both while in reserve. Preservation effort as a Washington DC memorial failed for lack of funds; sold for scrapping 1958-07-01; scrapped at Kearny, NJ, September 1958 to March 1960. Spec block: 9 boilers (400 psi), steam turbines, 4 shafts, 120,000 shp; crew 2,217 ship's company + air wing (1941 figure); 19,800 tons standard / 25,500 full load.

Construction trades (Newport News, 1934-36); crew 1938-47; Kearny scrapping workforce 1958-60
    Limitations
Volunteer-maintained naval-history archive, not a federal record - but dates agree with DANFS where overlapping (launch, commission, decommission, sale). Supplies dates the DANFS transcription omits (ordered, laid down, stricken, reclassifications). Scrapping-window start (September 1958) conflicts with the cv6.org chronology (spring 1959) - carried as a gap, not resolved. No asbestos or insulation-material content.

    Finding
Association-maintained ship chronology documents the end-of-life record: inactivated at New York Naval Shipyard 1946-01-18; decommissioned 1947-02-17; reclassified CVA-6 1952-10-01 and CVS-6 1953-08-08 while in reserve; stricken 1956-10-02 after the preservation campaign failed; sold to Lipsett Inc. for dismantlement 1958-07-01; scrapping at Kearny, NJ ran from spring 1959 into 1960.

Lipsett Inc. scrapping workforce (context only - no documentation located)
    Limitations
Association historical site (Wayback capture; live cv6.org unreachable on 2026-09-19) rather than a federal record; dates agree with DANFS and NavSource where overlapping. Sole located source naming the buyer (Lipsett Inc.). Scrapping-start month conflicts with NavSource (spring 1959 vs September 1958) - unresolved, carried in gaps. Scrapping is asbestos-relevant context only - dismantling an era-built steam plant disturbs insulation - but no hazmat or worker-exposure record for the Kearny breaking was located.

  4. [4]DANFS spec block (CV-6: displacement, dimensions, complement) + NavSource spec block (machinery figures) + class-standard machinery per secondary consensus [nhhc_danfs]

DANFS spec block (displacement 19,800t, length 809'6", complement 2,919); NavSource power-plant line (9 boilers 400 psi, 4 shafts, 120,000 shp); class composition and member dispositions per yorktown-class.class.json member_vessels/ev-yorktown-class-02; builder names per secondary sources - see gaps
    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
The Yorktown class comprised three carriers - Yorktown (CV-5), Enterprise (CV-6), Hornet (CV-8) - all built at Newport News 1934-41 with high-pressure steam plants: nine boilers and geared steam turbines in the class-standard configuration (NavSource spec block for this hull: 9 boilers at 400 psi, 4 shafts, 120,000 shp; boiler and turbine builder names rest on secondary consensus). CV-5 and CV-8 were 1942 war losses; this hull is the class's sole survivor and its only member with a post-service scrapping phase. Construction-era practice is the exposure frame: boiler insulation, steam-line lagging, gaskets, packing, and deck/bulkhead materials in Navy steam plants of the period commonly contained asbestos. This hull's 19,800-ton, 809-foot steam plant fits that era pattern.

Construction trades (Newport News, 1934-36); crew 1938-47
    Limitations
Class/era inference only - construction predates WWII-era peak insulation use but asbestos was standard in 1930s naval steam plants; no hull-specific survey or insulation record exists (ship scrapped 1958-60). Does not confirm installed materials, quantities, or any exposure.

    Finding
GAO documented the Navy's asbestos-protection program and that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships, not beginning substitution of alternative materials until the early 1970s - decades after this hull was built and scrapped.

Program-level documentation; postdates this hull's scrapping by nearly two decades and bounds why no survey/abatement-era records exist for it. Finding
No qualifying asbestos-litigation opinion naming USS Enterprise CV-6 located. Fresh CourtListener query 'USS Enterprise' + asbestos (2026-09-19) returned 3 opinions, all name collisions: Dumas v. ABB Group (D. Del. 2014 - service aboard 'the USS Enterprise' approximately 1960-1963 on precom detail, i.e., the nuclear carrier CVN-65 built 1958-61 at Newport News; CV-6 was scrapped 1958-60) and John Crane Inc. v. AIU Insurance Co. (Ill. App. x2 - insurance coverage, 'Enterprise' as corporate name). Plain-name re-verification ('USS Enterprise' unqualified) was blocked by the CourtListener 125/day cap (HTTP 429) on 2026-09-19; the batch-03 sweep of 2026-09-15 classified all 17 'USS Enterprise' opinions as CVN-65 courts-martial/unrelated matters and 'CV-6' queries as docket-fragment noise - zero qualifying asbestos opinions for CV-6. A commercial aggregator's claimed BUSHIPS equipment manifest for CV-6 (Warren Pumps contract entries) is contaminated with CVN-65 records on its face and is excluded as evidence (see search ledger and gaps).

    Limitations
CourtListener indexes published opinions, not all filings or state trial verdicts; high name collision ('Enterprise' spans CV-6, CVN-65, and non-naval uses) required per-result classification - none qualified for CV-6. The 2026-09-19 plain-name re-verification was rate-limit blocked, so the negative finding rests on the asbestos-qualified query plus the batch-03 classification sweep; absence of a located opinion does not prove no suit was ever filed. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
