- Finding
- Documented for this hull (DANFS): launched 18 April 1943 by Cramp Shipbuilding Co., Philadelphia (sponsor Mrs. J. Bilisoly Hudgins); commissioned 2 June 1944, Comdr. W. J. Millican; final training at Pearl Harbor; departed 18 September 1944 on her first patrol, joining Croaker (SS-246) and Perch (SS-313) for a coordinated Yellow Sea patrol which she directed. Surface gun action 30 September; last communication 17 October; never heard from again. Japanese records show no antisubmarine action in her area - 'it is assumed that she struck a mine and sank with all hands.'

[2]United States Submarine Losses, World War II (Naval History Division / ONI official publication, 1963), Escolar (SS-294) loss report - verbatim HyperWar transcription [other_primary]
- Locator
- ibiblio HyperWar USN/SubLosses, Escolar section incl. roster pp. 120-122
- Finding type

- Finding
- Official loss report: Escolar (Cdr. W. J. Millican) commanded the coordinated attack group 'Millican's Marauders' (Escolar, Croaker, Perch) in the Yellow Sea north of 30-00'N. A 30 September partial transmission described a deck-gun engagement with a boat 'similar to ex-Italian Peter George.' Perch received her last message 17 October: position 33-44'N, 127-33'E, heading for 33-44'N, 129-06'E. All contact failed thereafter; presumed lost 27 November 1944, loss assessed about 17 October. 'The known minefields in Tsushima Strait were laid in April 1945. However, there were mines in the general area of Escolar's predicted position, and the most likely explanation for her end at present is that she detonated a mine.' Full crew roster printed (~82 names). NOTE: a postwar secondary claim (NavSource) attributes her sinking to depth-charging by kaibokan CD-38 and Patrol Boat 102 (ex-USS Stewart, DD-224) on 19 October 1944 - this conflicts with the official mine assessment and is flagged as an alternative theory, not promoted.

- Crew lost with the boat (~82 per printed roster/NavSource)
- Limitations
- Official USN loss assessment, not a wreck survey - the wreck is not located. The kaibokan/PB-102 claim is a secondary-source theory carried as a documented alternative, not the finding. Crew roster ~82 names; NavSource caption says 82. No asbestos content.

[3]Era inference anchored to DANFS-documented construction and yard periods for this hull; Balao-class diesel-electric machinery per NavSource specification block and BuShips Ships' Data 1945 (class profile ev-balao-class-02) [other_primary]
- Locator
- construction-era inference from DANFS dates, NavSource spec block, documented yard periods
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era inference: a diesel-electric fleet submarine built 1942-44 at Cramp Shipbuilding in the peak asbestos era would era-typically have carried asbestos-containing exhaust lagging, engine gaskets and packing, and thermal/acoustic insulation around machinery and galley/refrigeration equipment. Balao-class boats had NO boilers or steam plant - the diesel-electric plant narrows the steam-era asbestos pathway materially. Documented yard windows: Cramp Shipbuilding construction (1942-44); no service-period yard availabilities (lost on her first patrol). She was lost in October 1944 with her full wartime fit aboard; the wreck is not located and no material condition record exists.
