DANFS entry: Eucalyptus (YN-11: dp. 560; l. 163'2"; b. 30'6"; dr. 11'8"; s. 12 k.; cpl. 48; a. 1 3"; cl. Aloe) - an Australasian tree of the myrtle family. Launched 3 July 1941 by General Engineering and Dry Dock Co., Alameda, Calif.; sponsored by Mrs. Romana Jorgenson; placed in service noncommissioned 9 October 1941 (Lt. S. B. McDonald, USNR, officer-in-charge); commissioned 9 May 1942 (Lt. Cmdr. A. J. Einmo, USNR); reclassified AN-16 on 20 January 1944. Assigned to 13th Naval District for patrol and net-tending until late 1943, then Alaskan waters; returned to Seattle July 1944, then San Francisco Bay area for the rest of WWII. Sailed to Astoria, Oregon November 1945; placed in commission in reserve 6 March 1946; placed out of commission November 1946 at Astoria; in reserve through 1961; stricken and transferred to MARAD September 1962.

    Limitations
Authoritative for identity, milestones, and service narrative; contains no asbestos or materials information. DANFS gives commissioning CO as 'A. J. Einmo' while NavSource's roster lists 'Andreas Sorenson Einmo' - minor initials discrepancy, not material. Live NHHC URL returned 404; the archived capture is the citable location.

    Finding
NavSource ship page and a transcribed WWII Navy net-laying narrative: laid down 31 December 1940 as Yard Net Tender at General Engineering and Dry Dock Co., Alameda; after November 1946 decommissioning the hull was laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, Columbia River Group; commanding-officer roster lists Lt. S. B. McDonald (OinC, 1941-10-09) then LCDR Andreas Sorenson Einmo (from 1942-05-09). The transcribed narrative describes this hull's working method: USS Eucalyptus (AN-16) and USS Mulberry (AN-27) received orders to lay the Kuluk Bay net in the Adak region (Aleutians, 1944); net sections were built at the Sand Bay depot on Great Sitkin Island (~20 miles away), loaded by crane onto Eucalyptus's deck in six 30-foot panels per trip with flotations attached, then discharged and streamed using the ship's stern anchor and winches; a 2,500-lb anchor served as temporary mooring.

Net-tender crew performing deck/winch work, Kuluk Bay (Adak), 1944
    Limitations
Volunteer-maintained archive; the net-laying narrative is a transcription of a Navy document whose underlying publication is not identified on the page. Ship-page milestones agree with DANFS except the 'decommissioned November 1946' shorthand (see correction row). Documents operations and custody only - no materials or asbestos information; supports no asbestos claim.

Milestones: Entry/Acquisition 1961-06-15 (status card shows Navy Dept. delivery to Reserve Fleet, Suisun Bay, 9:40 AM PDST, permanent transfer); Disposition and Withdrawal 1976-02-27, milestone note 'CUST 1962 NDRF 1961' (MARAD custody from 1961, formal title transfer 1962). Recorded fate: 'Sold - NTU' (non-transportation use).

Authoritative for MARAD custody and disposal milestones; the scanned status card is a hand-annotated government card with partially legible entries (OCR-aided reading). 'Sold - NTU' records a non-transportation-use sale (scrapping-type disposal) but names no buyer or scrap yard. Contains no asbestos, materials, or condition-survey information; supports no asbestos claim.

    Finding
Official-data transcription of the Aloe (AN-6) class: this hull ordered 27 July 1940 (one of 32 net tenders directed by CNO 3 July 1940 under the 159-district-craft program Congress approved 26 June 1940), keel laid 31 December 1940 at General Engineering & Dry Dock, launched 3 July 1941, in service 9 October 1941; commissioned 9 May 1942; ex YN-11 on 20 January 1944; in USN reserve 1946-61; to NDRF 15 June 1961; MARAD sale recorded 3 February 1976 and delivered to buyer 27 February 1976. Class design data: steel hull, 560 tons light / ~805-850 loaded, 163.2 ft oa, diesel-electric 800 shp single screw with propulsion units also serving the net-handling deck winches, complement 46 (1944), armament evolution to 1-3"/50 (AN-16 carried one 3"/50 by 1961).

A careful transcription of official data, not the underlying documents themselves. Class-level machinery and characteristic figures are design-level, not a survey of this hull. Disposal table 'Decomm. 6 Mar 46' reflects the in-commission-in-reserve date; DANFS places her out of commission November 1946 (see correction row). No asbestos or materials information.

    Finding
Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era and program under which this 1941 net tender was built - and that wartime demand drove unprecedented asbestos utilization in ship construction.

    Limitations
Program/era-level scholarly documentation of asbestos use in WWII shipbuilding generally; does not name this vessel and does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard this hull, nor quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation. The hull's diesel-electric plant means the steam-system insulation uses emphasized for larger combatants are not directly analogous.

    Finding
Source discrepancy resolved: secondary summaries (e.g., Wikipedia/NavalCoverMuseum) report 'decommissioned 6 March 1946,' while DANFS documents a two-step reserve process - placed in commission in reserve 6 March 1946 at Astoria, then placed out of commission November 1946 at Astoria. NavSource's 'decommissioned in November 1946' agrees with the DANFS out-of-commission step. The DANFS sequence is adopted as controlling.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1941 steel-hulled auxiliary is era-consistent with asbestos-containing gaskets, insulation, brake linings, and coatings, and her 1976 scrapping predates hazmat-disclosure practice. Does not establish presence or absence; does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility.
