[2]DANFS, Eureka II (NHHC live, verified via rendered fetch): 'On 25 April 1943 PC-488 (q.v.) was reclassified and named Eureka (IX-221)' [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- DANFS Eureka II entry (one-line stub); DANFS Eureka I entry for naming ordinal
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- DANFS documents for this hull that PC-488 was reclassified an Unclassified Miscellaneous Auxiliary and named Eureka (IX-221) on 25 April - printing the year as 1943. The Eureka II entry is a one-line stub cross-referencing the PC-488 entry ('q.v.'), which is not separately digitized on the NHHC site. The DANFS Eureka I entry confirms the first Eureka was a screw steamer captured 20 April 1862 in the Rappahannock River, Potomac Flotilla service 1862-65, making this hull the second Eureka (as NavSource numbers her).

- Ship-specific reclassification record only; no asbestos or material content. The printed year (1943) conflicts with NavSource/HyperWar (1945) and is contradicted by Seventh Naval District correspondence that still calls the ship 'PC-488' through March-April 1945 and 'Eureka (IX 221) ex-PC 488' only from May 1945 (ev-03) - the 1945 year is carried and the DANFS year is treated as a misprint (see ev-09).

The reclassification date given (25 April 1945) conflicts with DANFS's printed '25 April 1943' and is corroborated by the NARA correspondence sequence (ev-03). Contains no asbestos content; 'fate unknown' after the 1946 sale leaves final disposition undocumented.

- Finding
- Seventh Naval District general-correspondence index entries naming this hull, in sequence: 'PC-488 inspection' (August 1944); 'PC-488 retained by Commander Panama Sea Frontier' (August 1944); 'PC-488 survey and direction to place in reduced condition,' 'PC-488 placed in reduced condition,' 'PC-488 placed in reduced commission pending further disposition,' and 'PC-488 procured for training purposes' (December 1944); 'PC-488 procured for training purposes' (January 1945); 'U.S.S. PC-488 change in status contemplated' (March 1945); 'U.S.S. PC-488 change in status' (March-April 1945); and 'U.S.S. Eureka (IX 221) ex-PC 488 placed out of commission' (May 1945). The sequence documents her Panama Sea Frontier assignment as of August 1944, reduction to reduced commission in December 1944, procurement for a training role, the April 1945 reclassification to Eureka (IX-221), and decommissioning in May 1945.

- Finding-aid subject lines only - the underlying letters were not read, so each entry establishes that the Navy documented the stated action in 7th ND records, not the operative details (exact days, reasons, or whether the planned training utilization occurred). The sequence also independently dates the reclassification to spring 1945, corroborating NavSource's 25 April 1945 against DANFS's printed 1943 (see ev-09). No asbestos content.

- Finding
- A PC-461-class diesel submarine chaser built March 1941-August 1942 sits squarely inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a patrol craft of this type and period were thermal insulation, machinery and diesel-exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation in the machinery spaces. As a diesel-powered vessel she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

- Finding
- Peer-reviewed documentation that asbestos-containing pipe covering was installed during WWII naval-vessel construction: the study surveyed pipe-covering operations in constructing naval vessels across four anonymized yards (two Navy yards, two contract yards), x-raying 1,074 pipe coverers and finding 3 asbestosis cases, with high dust counts on operations including shipboard installation. This is the era's primary published industrial-hygiene record for asbestos insulation work in U.S. naval shipbuilding - the construction window of this hull (1941-42).

- survey conducted WWII construction era; published January 1946
- Population
- 1,074 pipe coverers at four anonymized WWII naval/contract shipyards
- Limitations
- Era-level literature, not a hull record: the four surveyed yards are anonymized in the text and Sullivan Dry Dock is not identified among them; nothing links the findings to this specific vessel. The study's conclusion that pipe covering was 'not a dangerous occupation' was later heavily criticized as deeply flawed (Kelly RJ, New Solut 2026;36(2):138-150, PMID 42307414). Does not establish materials aboard this hull, individual exposure, quantity, or present-day presence.

- Peer-reviewed 2026 critique documenting that the 1946 Navy pipe-covering survey (ev-05) 'errantly concluded that insulation work on ships using asbestos-containing materials was not a dangerous occupation,' after which 'the U.S. Navy and others neglected to protect insulators and other employees from asbestos dust for the next 25 years, leading to an epidemic of asbestos-related diseases.' Confirms asbestos-containing materials were used in naval-vessel insulation work throughout this hull's era.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming PC-488 or USS Eureka (IX-221) was found in the public sources searched. CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the fleet-wide request budget (hourly pace limiter, ~58 requests/hour shared across batch sessions) was spent on each attempt; logged as blocked in search_ledger, not a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced neither qualifying cases nor even law-firm marketing content asserting asbestos aboard this hull - an unusual absence for a WWII Navy hull.

- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and the litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (paced, not run). Seventh Naval District correspondence (RG 181, NARA Atlanta), wartime patrol logs (RG 24, NARA College Park), and any 1946 sale/disposal records are undigitized leads. - Finding
- CORRECTION: two printed-source errors resolved. (1) The HyperWar IX table lists 'IX-221 | Eureka | 1945 | 275 | Converted from Sub Chaser PC-1124' - the ex-hull number is wrong: DANFS, NavSource, and the Seventh Naval District's own correspondence all identify Eureka (IX-221) as ex-PC-488, not PC-1124. (2) DANFS Eureka II prints the reclassification as '25 April 1943' while NavSource and HyperWar carry 1945 - and the 7th ND correspondence still calls the ship 'PC-488' through March-April 1945 ('change in status,' 'change in status contemplated') and 'Eureka (IX 221) ex-PC 488' only from May 1945, resolving the conflict to 25 April 1945; the DANFS year is treated as a misprint.
