DANFS record for this hull: launched 7 December 1942 by Boston Navy Yard as BDE-5, intended for transfer to Great Britain, retained for U.S. Navy use; commissioned 15 April 1943, Lt. Comdr. C. B. Henriques, USNR, in command. Antisubmarine training and radar experiments in Chesapeake Bay; convoy escort flying the flag of Commander, Escort Division 5; five Casablanca voyages; departed Norfolk 22 April 1944 on first Bizerte run and joined the antiaircraft barrage against a heavy torpedo-plane attack; on 29 May 1944 detached to aid torpedoed Block Island (CVE-21, sunk) and Barr (DE-576), screening Barr under tow to Casablanca; further Bizerte, Palermo, and three Oran runs. Escort duty ended 11 June 1945; submarine-exercise target at New London; arrived New York 11 September; decommissioned 2 October 1945; scrapped 12 July 1946. One battle star for WWII. Namesake Lt.(j.g.) Milo Burnell Evarts, killed aboard Boise (CL-47) at Cape Esperance 11-12 October 1942, posthumous Navy Cross. Specs block: 1,140 tons; 289'5"; 35'1"; 8'3"; 21 kt; complement 156; 3x3", 8 dcp, 1 dcp (hh), 2 dct; class Evarts.

    Limitations
DANFS documents service history, namesake, and specifications - not materials or asbestos content. DANFS omits the laid-down and stricken dates (laid down is corroborated by NHHC's Mediterranean Convoys appendix, ev-02; stricken remains unverified, in gaps). HyperWar transcription contains an OCR typo ('29 Mary 1944'); the NHHC page text (via Wayback capture 2025-01-26) reads '29 May 1944'. Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404.

    Finding
Official NHHC combat narrative corroborates this hull: appendix ship summary reads 'Name: Evarts (DE-5); Laid down: 17 October 1942; Launched: 7 December 1942; Commissioned: 15 April 1943; Fate: Survived the war' and notes Evarts escorted convoys to Casablanca and Bizerte, including UGS-40, and received one battle star. The UGS-40 section lists 'USS Evarts, Lt. Comdr. Francis A. Harding' among CTF 61 (Lt. James M. Robertson) escort units for the three-wave torpedo-plane attack on 11 May 1944 (~30 aircraft) in which no convoy ship or escort was lost or damaged - the attack DANFS describes as 'two days before reaching' Bizerte.

Official NPS Boston NHP publication records: 'The need of the Navy for anti-submarine convoy escorts was so great that seven of the twelve escort vessels laid down by the Navy Yard in 1942 for the British under the Lend-Lease Act were retained by the United States. The first of these ships, USS Evarts, is seen in Boston Harbor on April 19, 1943, four days after her commissioning.' Confirms the builder yard and the Lend-Lease origin of this hull (built as BDE-5).

    Finding
Era/yard inference: an Evarts-class destroyer escort completed 1942-43 in a U.S. Navy yard would have carried era-standard asbestos applications appropriate to a diesel-electric ship - exhaust insulation, gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, brake linings, and deck/bulkhead coverings - but no boilers or steam lagging, the largest asbestos categories of steam ships; builder Boston Naval Shipyard is documented as a tier-3 asbestos-era yard in the Atlas dataset (yard-level John Crane gasket/sealing litigation record).

    Limitations
Class/era and builder-yard inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. No primary source names asbestos materials aboard this hull; the diesel-electric (GMT/'short hull') plant detail rests on standard references and is unverified against an official source (see gaps). Does not quantify material or establish any individual's exposure.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for DE-5: no hull ACM survey, abatement contract, disposal hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming USS Evarts was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The hull was scrapped 12 July 1946 - decades before the Navy's asbestos-control programs and before modern hazmat documentation existed - so this negative finding is expected rather than probative.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1942-43 Navy-yard build is era-consistent with asbestos use, but no primary source names materials on this hull. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

    Finding
Archival leads for hull-level records not yet retrieved: DE-5's wartime deck logs should sit in NARA RG 24; per-hull material and machinery specifications may exist in RG 19 General Information Books or BuShips plan files; the 1945 Ships' Data (NAVSHIPS 250-010) escort-vessel section would carry the official machinery listing for this hull (the available scan is image-only and was not OCR'd).

Leads only - holdings not retrieved or confirmed for this hull; existence of the record series is documented, presence of DE-5-specific content within them is not. NARA catalog API returned an empty/key-gated response during this session.
