- DANFS record for this hull: launched 13 August 1944 by New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, N.J.; sponsored by Mrs. Alexander C. Murray, wife of the mayor of Fall River; commissioned 1 July 1945, Capt. D. S. Crawford in command. Arrived Norfolk 31 October 1945 for experimental development operations until 31 January 1946; assigned to JTF 1 for Operation 'Crossroads' atomic weapons tests in the Marshall Islands; altered at San Pedro 16 February - 6 March 1946 to provide flagship accommodations; embarked Rear Admiral F. G. Fahrion, commander of the target vessel group, at Pearl Harbor 17 March and served in the Marshalls 21 May - 14 September 1946. After west coast training, flagship of Cruiser Division 1 in the Far East 12 January - 17 June 1947; placed out of commission in reserve at Puget Sound Navy Yard 31 October 1947. [Stricken from the Navy Register 19 February 1971; sold 28 August 1972 and broken up - Bauer & Roberts supplement.]

- Limitations
- DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content; the Vol. II entry omits the laid-down date (carried from secondary sources in ev-04 and gaps). Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404.

- Era inference: Baltimore-class construction (4 Babcock & Wilcox boilers, 4 GE geared steam turbines, ~120,000 shp, 565 psi/850 deg F) in 1943-45 at New York Shipbuilding, Camden falls squarely in the documented Navy asbestos-insulation era; the 1960 BuShips Technical Manual insulation chapter enumerates the era-standard suite - 85%-magnesia and amosite pipe covering, asbestos felt, chrysotile cloth/tape lagging, asbestos millboard, finishing cement, molded block. The only documented post-delivery alteration for this hull is the February-March 1946 San Pedro flagship-accommodation work; her 1945-47 active career and 24-year reserve lay-up at Puget Sound gave her the least-disturbed service profile of the class.

- Limitations
- Class/era specification and yard-period inference only - no ship-specific asbestos record exists for this hull (ev-03); this row must not be read as establishing that asbestos products were or remain aboard. Does not quantify material; the scope of the 1946 alteration is undocumented.

[3]Batch-62 search ledger (this record) + baltimore-class profile CourtListener sweep, class-e/baltimore-class.class.json sl-baltimore-class-05 / ev-baltimore-class-07 (2026-09-16) [other_primary]

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: the class-level CourtListener exact-phrase sweep ('USS <name>' + asbestos) covering all fourteen Baltimore-class hulls on 2026-09-16 returned no qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull; a fresh per-ship re-query on 2026-09-18 was blocked by API throttle (HTTP 429, 125/day shared quota) and deferred per the backoff rule rather than retried. No hull ACM survey, abatement contract, scrapping hazmat disclosure, NVR entry (hull sold 1972, before live-register coverage), or museum record with asbestos data was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - it establishes only that no qualifying ship-specific documentation was found in the searched repositories. State-court and unindexed matters are outside the sweep's coverage; the fresh per-ship hull-number query remains an open deferred item. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
