[3]DANFS, Farenholt I (DD-332) (service narrative and disposal) [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- DANFS entry, service narrative paragraphs 2-5
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- DANFS service narrative: Farenholt arrived at San Diego, her home port, 28 May 1921 and joined the Pacific Fleet in yearly exercises from the Pacific Northwest to the Canal Zone; transited the Panama Canal for Caribbean fleet concentrations in 1924 and 1927 (the 1927 cruise visited Norfolk, New York, and Newport); May-August 1925 Hawaiian Islands fleet problem followed by the Battle Fleet cruise to Pago Pago, Samoa, Australia, and New Zealand; 1928 Pearl Harbor exercises; summer 1929 Naval Reserve training cruises visiting Victoria, B.C. She was decommissioned 20 February 1930 and, after scrapping, sold as a hulk 10 June 1931 in accordance with the London Treaty limiting naval armament.

[4]NavSource Naval History, Destroyer Photo Index DD-332 USS Farenholt (operational/building data block; NH 83758 and Mare Island DD-36 photo captions) [other_primary]
- Locator
- Operational and Building Data block; photo caption list (Mare Island Dry Dock #2, June-July 1922)
- Finding type

- Finding
- NavSource Naval History's DD-332 photographic index records: laid down by Bethlehem Steel, San Francisco, 13 September (year in conflict - see limitations); launched 9 March 1921; commissioned 10 May 1921; decommissioned 20 February 1930; stricken 12 July 1930; sold 10 June 1931 to Bethlehem Steel, Alameda, and broken up for scrap. The page publishes U.S. Naval Historical Center photographs of this hull including 'USS Farenholt (DD-332) in San Pablo Bay California circa 1921' (NH 83758) and a Mare Island Navy Yard Dry Dock No. 2 photograph showing Farenholt among six Destroyer Division 36 ships drydocked 15 June - 14 July 1922.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer archival index, not an official record; its contributed data carries one conflict - it reads laid down 'September 13 1920' where the Pier 70 yard build list reads 13 September 1919 (consistent with sister-ship keel dates; conflict carried in gaps). The stricken date 12 July 1930 is supplied by NavSource; DANFS does not give it. Mare Island docking is photo-documented yard presence, not evidence of work scope or materials.

- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The Pier 70 / San Francisco Drydock historical build list records yard hull SF 253 as Farenholt, USN destroyer DD-332, 1,190 tons, contracted 1918, laid down 13 September 1919, launched 9 March 1921, delivered/commissioned 10 May 1921, and scrapped 1930. The builder yard - Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp.'s San Francisco plant, founded as Union Iron Works - is not an entry in the Atlas shipyard registry (the 'bethlehem-shipbuilding' entry covers the Quincy yard, a different facility).

- Limitations
- Yard-history build list (secondary compilation from Union Iron Works hull records), not a government source; used here to fix builder identity, yard hull number, and the 1919 keel date, which conflicts with NavSource's 1920 reading - conflict logged in gaps, not silently reconciled. Contains no asbestos information.

[7]National Archives, 'Researching Asbestos aboard US Naval Vessel up through 1961' [other_primary]
- Locator
- General Information Books section (Entry P 9); Cartographic Branch section (S39/S48 codes); Other Records and their usefulness
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- NARA's research guide identifies the record series used for ship asbestos research: RG 19 Bureau of Ships correspondence; General Information Books including Destroyer/DE/Frigate GIBs (Entry P 9, covering 1907-1961 - which includes this hull's 1921-1930 service); and ship engineering drawings under Material Groups S39 (Insulation and Lagging) and S48 (Piping), noting S39/S48 drawings are relatively rare. The guide states that Navy deck logs and muster rolls 'do not provide any information on the use of or presence of asbestos in Navy ships or ship components and therefore provide no direct evidence of asbestos.'

- Limitations
- This is a research guide, not a Farenholt material record. It establishes where to search and why service records are insufficient; it does not show that a Farenholt GIB exists or that this ship contained asbestos. Much of the RG 19 correspondence series described begins 1940, postdating this hull's 1931 disposal.

- Limitations
- GAO studied 1970s-era Navy asbestos policy nearly five decades after this hull was scrapped; it did not examine DD-332 and cannot establish this ship's materials, exposures, or repair work. Automated access to full text is blocked (403), matching the standing defect noted in BATCH-01.

- Locator
- Search ledger sl-01 through sl-07
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The official sources and catalog entries reviewed for this record did not yield a ship-specific asbestos survey, product schedule, abatement record, or material finding for Farenholt (DD-332). Asbestos presence aboard DD-332 remains unknown.

- Limitations
- This is a bounded search result, not proof that asbestos was absent. Period steam plants of this type commonly used asbestos-containing insulation, but no ship-specific documentation establishes it for this hull. Underlying NARA plans, GIBs, builder correspondence, and scrapping files were not obtained.

[10]CourtListener authenticated API v4 searches via fleet helper cl-auth-search.py: 'Farenholt' type=o (count 28, all reviewed); 'DD-332' type=o (count 826, page 1 reviewed - all string collisions) [court_record]
- Locator
- Opinion search results; search ledger sl-08 through sl-10
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- Authenticated CourtListener API v4 sweeps: (a) opinion search for 'Farenholt' returned count 28 - all 28 hits reviewed across both result pages, and every hit is a surname reference, led by the namesake's own Navy pay litigation (United States v. Farenholt, 206 U.S. 226 (1907); Farenholt v. United States, Ct. Cl. 1907) and later cases citing it, plus unrelated Farenholt-family civil matters; none names a vessel. (b) Opinion search for 'DD-332' returned count 826 - all 20 page-1 hits reviewed and every one is a docket-number or reporter-citation string collision (e.g., Fla. docket 'No. DD-332', slip-op '00332' numbers); the unqualified hull string cannot isolate the vessel and deeper paging is not probative. No qualifying asbestos litigation naming USS Farenholt or DD-332 was located. The docket-type (type=r) query was attempted repeatedly and blocked by the fleet pacing guard; it remains unrun.
- Verification
- verified
- Role
- negative_finding
- Documentation level
- ship_specific
- Accessed
- 2026-09-27
- Limitations
- Negative finding covers the opinion index only: all 28 'Farenholt' opinion hits and the 20 reviewed 'DD-332' opinion hits contain no reference to this vessel. The docket-type query (RECAP index) could not be run under fleet pacing and remains pending; a same-name WWII hull (DD-491, Benson class) is the likelier referent for any asbestos docket naming 'USS Farenholt'. Absence of opinion hits does not prove that no complaint or docket exists.
