- DANFS record for this hull: launched 25 February 1945 by New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, N.J.; sponsored by Mrs. F. O. Olsen; commissioned 9 December 1945, Capt. W. Craig in command. Sailed Philadelphia 15 April 1946 with VAdm B. H. Bieri for goodwill cruise (Bermuda, Trinidad, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo), departed 31 May for Mediterranean; visited Turkey, Lebanon, Greece, Italy, France, North Africa; American representative at Trieste during Italo-Yugoslav dispute; returned New York 2 March 1947. Second Mediterranean tour from 20 May 1947 including one month as flagship, Commander Naval Forces Mediterranean; returned Newport 13 September 1947. Atlantic Fleet exercises October-November 1947 (Bermuda to Newfoundland) carrying VAdm A. W. Radford, Commander 2d Task Fleet. Two further Mediterranean tours and two Caribbean exercises 1948-49. Decommissioned and placed in reserve, berthed at Bayonne, N.J., 14 February 1950. Stricken 1 March 1970; sold 18 August 1971 (Bauer & Roberts, Register of Ships, p.152).

Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404. Bracketed stricken/sold data is the editor's Bauer & Roberts supplement, not the 1963 DANFS text.

- Official 1945 BuShips table row for FARGO (CL-106): New York S. B. Corp.; contract price $20,717,000; program/authorization and contract dates July 9, 1942 and August 7, 1942 (column headers damaged in scan; NavSource corroborates 'Authorized 9 JUL 1942' and the 7 August 1942 order is documented in secondary references); keel laid August 23, 1943; launched February 25, 1945; estimated completion May 15, 1945. Armament table: 12 x 6"/47, 12 x 5"/38 twin DP, six quad plus two twin 40mm AA mounts. Published while the ship was still building - confirms keel date and builder from a primary source.

- Official construction/armament table only - contains no asbestos or insulation content. OCR of the scan misreads the keel date as 'Aug. 28'; the scanned page itself reads Aug. 23, 1943 (verified against the page image this session). The 'May 15, 1945' column is the estimated completion date, not commissioning (actual 9 Dec 1945 per DANFS).

- asbestos_application
- Finding
- The BuShips Technical Manual insulation chapter enumerates the asbestos material suite standard to Navy steam plants of this hull's era: MIL-P-2781 thermal-insulation pipe covering including grade I 85% magnesia (a molded magnesia product commonly bound with ~15% asbestos fiber) and class c amosite-fiber covering; roll asbestos felt MIL-I-15091; asbestos cloth/tape SS-C-466 (80-95% chrysotile) as lagging; asbestos millboard; asbestos finishing cement. Fargo's plant - 4 boilers and 4 geared steam turbines on 4 shafts at 100,000 shp - is the same Cleveland-derived steam design to which this suite applied.

- Limitations

- Finding
- Builder-yard context: Fargo was built 1943-45 at New York Shipbuilding's Camden yard, a yard documented in the Atlas dataset with named asbestos products and elevated worker-cohort outcomes covering the same decades - construction-era asbestos exposure at the building yard is documented for the site, though no record ties a specific product to this hull.

- Limitations
- Yard-level documentation, not a hull record - establishes that asbestos products were in documented use at the building yard during this hull's construction era, not that a named product was installed aboard CL-106. Cohort figures describe yard worker populations, not this hull's trades specifically.

- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or court finding naming this hull was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener sweeps (completed 08:22 UTC after an earlier rate-limit block): 'USS Fargo' opinion search returned 0 opinions; 'USS Fargo' docket search returned 1 docket - Citizens for a Healthy Community v. BLM, 1:20-cv-02484 (D. Colo., APA/NEPA environmental review), a name-collision reference, not vessel litigation; 'CL-106' opinion search returned 396 hits, all identifier collisions (claim/docket numbers), and 'CL-106'+asbestos returned 8 hits, all claim-number collisions in asbestos MDL/claims matters, none naming the vessel. No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull was located.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1943-45 steam cruiser of this design is era-consistent with retained asbestos materials, and her twenty-year reserve lay-up plus 1971-72 scrapping are undocumented disturbance events. The litigation negative is real but bounded: CourtListener covers indexed federal/state opinions and RECAP dockets only; state-court asbestos matters naming CL-106 may exist outside the index. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Identity disambiguation: an earlier 'USS Fargo' existed on paper only. Hull CL-85 was ordered as the cruiser Fargo under the 1940 program, reordered as an Independence-class light carrier before laying down, laid down as Crown Point (CV-27) 11 April 1942 by the same Camden yard, renamed Langley 13 November 1942, and commissioned 31 August 1943 - two years before CL-106 commissioned. Any 'USS Fargo' reference in 1942-43 records or litigation may resolve to the CL-85/CVL-27 lineage, not this hull.

- Finding type

- Finding
- Class design context: the Fargo class was the modified Cleveland design - compact pyramidal superstructure with a single trunked funnel replacing the Cleveland class's two funnels (improved AA arcs), main-battery turrets lowered about a foot, wing 5-inch mounts lowered to the main deck, hangar halved. Thirteen hulls planned (CL-106 through CL-118); only Fargo and Huntington (CL-107) completed; Newark, New Haven, Buffalo, Wilmington cancelled under construction 12 August 1945 with the remainder cancelled earlier. Same 4-boiler/4-turbine/100,000-shp plant as the Cleveland design.
