- DANFS 'Flicker II (AMS-9)': 'A woodpecker of eastern North America. II. The second Flicker (AMS-9) was so named and reclassified from YMS-219 (q.v.) on 17 February 1947.' The same DANFS page carries the disambiguation line: 'Flicker was the name assigned to AM-416, but contracts for construction were canceled on 12 August 1945.' The 'q.v.' points to a print-DANFS YMS-219 appendix entry not located in digitized mirrors this pass.

- Finding
- NARA Special List 44 (List of Logbooks of US Navy Ships, Stations, and Miscellaneous Units, 1801-1947, by ship number) lists YMS-219 deck logs covering 1 November 1943 through 6 August 1946 - wartime logbooks for this hull exist in the Archives II (College Park) holdings. The hull does not appear in NARA's published A-to-Z index of fully digitized deck logs (checked 2026-09-24: no 'Flicker' entry in the F section and no 'YMS-219' entry in the Y section), so the logs are held but not confirmed digitized. Log coverage begins about four months after the July 1943 commissioning and is not treated as a commissioning-date source. No 'AM-70' or 'Flicker' row appears in SL-44, so this listing is unique to the YMS-219 hull.

- Limitations
- Holdings-level finding only - the logs exist as a series but nothing from them was read; no asbestos content is established or implied. Deck logs occasionally note overhaul/maintenance activity relevant to material-disturbance research. The November 1943 log start postdates the July 1943 commissioning; the earlier months' logs are not in this listing.

Establishes continuous Pacific combat-zone service from Leyte through Okinawa - a substantially documented wartime record for a hull of this size.

Martinac in 1924, closed 2014) lists YMS-219 as a US Navy minesweeper, 278d tons, 136 ft, delivered 20 July 1943, 'Reclassified 1947 as Flicker (AMS 9), struck 1960.' uboat.net's Allied Warships record gives: built by J. M. Martinac Shipbuilding Corp., Tacoma; ordered 14 March 1942; laid down 23 October 1942; launched 23 January 1943; commissioned 20 July 1943; stricken 1 January 1960.

M. Martinac' vs NavSource's 'J. N. Martinac'. Contains no asbestos information.

- Locator
- Navypedia YMS1 class page, technical-data block and project-history paragraph; shipbuildinghistory Martinac yard table, YMS rows
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- YMS-1-class configuration: wooden-hulled motor minesweepers ('wood was chosen as construction material for building depreciation'), ~136 ft, diesel-powered - two diesels on two shafts, no boilers or steam plant; NavSource's per-hull spec gives this ship two 880-bhp GM 8-268A diesels. The class was built in large numbers by small yards; Martinac's wartime YMS output included YMS-125 through YMS-128, YMS-216 through YMS-222, YMS-277/278, and YMS-434 through YMS-437. A wooden hull with diesel propulsion removes the boiler/steam-lagging category most associated with documented WWII-era shipboard asbestos, without excluding other era-typical materials.

- Limitations
- Class-level specification; documents the type's plant and hull form, not materials aboard this hull. Absence of a steam plant removes the most commonly documented WWII asbestos pathway but does not establish that no asbestos-containing material was aboard (gaskets, exhaust lagging, electrical insulation, fireproofing, brake linings remain undocumented either way). Navypedia's class complement (60) conflicts with NavSource's per-hull figure (32) - carried in gaps.

- Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era and program context in which this 1942-43 wooden-hulled minesweeper was built - and that wartime demand drove unprecedented asbestos utilization across naval construction.

- Finding
- NARA's official asbestos-research guide identifies the record series that would document hull-level material specifications for this ship: RG 19 Bureau of Ships general correspondence filed under hull designation 'YMS-219' (and 'AMS-9'/'MSC(O)-9'), class correspondence under the YMS-1 class namesake file, builder contract files for Martinac under the Navy Filing Manual 'QM' private-yard designation, minesweeper General Information Books, and Ship Engineering Drawings arranged by hull number - the guide names S103 (Booklets of General Plans), S39 (Insulation and Lagging), and S48 (Piping) as the codes most relevant to asbestos research. The guide covers Navy materiel 1941-1961, spanning this hull's entire U.S. career.
