- DANFS record for this hull: launched 20 May 1944 by American Shipbuilding Co., Cleveland, Ohio; sponsored by Miss Mary Persons; commissioned 11 February 1945, Lt. Cmdr. E. M. Osborne, USCGR, in command. After Caribbean shakedown she operated as a weather station ship out of Argentia, Newfoundland, from 2 April 1945; on 15 May 1945 she joined 'Button (DE-771)' in accepting the surrender of U-234 at 46 deg 39' N., 45 deg 39' W. (the escort name is a DANFS typo - DE-771 was USS Sutton, confirmed by the USCG Historian's Office entry for this ship, ev-02). On board Forsyth the same day, her medical officer and the U-234 doctor operated on a wounded sailor of the escort ('Button' in the DANFS text - actually Sutton), who died a week later at Argentia. Weather duty then out of Recife, Brazil, 1 December 1945 - 1 March 1946; decommissioned as a Navy ship at sea at 2400 on 14 March 1946 and immediately recommissioned as a Coast Guard vessel; USCG-decommissioned at New Orleans 2 August 1946. Spec block: 1,264 t; 303'11"; 37'6"; 13'8"; 20 k.; cpl. 176; a. 2 x 3-in.; cl. Tacoma.

- Limitations
- DANFS documents construction, specifications, and service history - not materials or asbestos content. The 'Button (DE-771)' reading in this entry is a typo (DE-771 was USS Sutton); carried as Sutton per the USCG Historian's parallel entry, with the conflict documented in gaps. Spec-block armament (2 x 3-in.) likely reflects the weather-fit removal of the after gun documented by the USCG entry - treated as consistent, not contradictory.

- USCG Historian's Office record for this hull: builder American Shipbuilding Co., Cleveland, Ohio; launched 20 May 1944; sponsored by Miss Mary Persons; commissioned 11 February 1945 under LCDR E. M. Osborne, USCGR; same service narrative as DANFS but names the escort correctly as 'Sutton (DE-771)' at the 15 May 1945 U-234 surrender; decommissioned as a Navy ship at sea 2400 14 March 1946 and immediately recommissioned as a Coast Guard cutter; USCG-decommissioned at New Orleans 2 August 1946. Spec block: displacement 2,230 tons; propulsion '2-shaft VTE, 3 boilers'; range 9,500 nm at 12 kt; complement 190; armament 3 x 3"/50, 4 x 40mm, 9 x 20mm, Hedgehog, 8 DCP, 2 DCT - with the note that frigates fitted for weather patrol had the after 3-inch gun removed and a weather balloon hangar added aft.

- NavSource record for this hull: originally authorized as patrol gunboat PG-210; reclassified patrol frigate PF-102 on 15 April 1943; laid down 6 December 1943 under a Maritime Commission contract (MC Type T. S2-S2-AQ1) by American Shipbuilding Co., Cleveland, Ohio; launched 20 May 1944; delivered and commissioned USS Forsyth (PF-102) 11 February 1945 at Curtis Bay, MD; decommissioned 14 March 1946 while at sea and immediately recommissioned into the Coast Guard as USCGC Forsyth (PF-102); decommissioned 2 August 1946 at New Orleans and returned to U.S. Navy custody; transferred to the Maritime Commission for disposal; sold to the Netherlands in July 1947 and renamed Cumulus; served as a weather ship until 1963; scrapped in 1969. Commanding officers: LCDR Edward M. Osborne USCG (11 Feb 1945 - 10 Oct 1945); LCDR Benjamin F. Langland USCGR (from 10 Oct 1945). Specs: 1,430 t; 303'11"; 37'6"; 13'8"; 20.3 kt; complement 176; propulsion two 3-drum express boilers and two 5,500-ihp Diamond Iron Works engines on two shafts; armament three 3"/50 DP mounts with weather frigates' after gun removed for a balloon hangar.

- Shipbuilding History's American Shipbuilding Cleveland yard table lists yard hull no. 1017 as 'PF 102 | Forsyth | U.S. Mar. Comm. | Patrol Frigate | 1430d | 304 ft | delivered Feb-45 | Weather ship 1945, to the Neth. 1947 as Cumulus, scrapped 1962' - placing construction at the AmShip Cleveland yard (not the company's Lorain yard), corroborating the Maritime Commission contract, the February 1945 delivery consistent with the 11 February 1945 commissioning, and the Dutch disposal. PF-99 Orlando, PF-100 Racine, and PF-101 Greensboro are the same Cleveland block (hulls 1014-1016).

- Finding
- Class/era inference: this hull was built 1943-45 to Maritime Commission Type T. S2-S2-AQ1 with a steam plant - two 3-drum express boilers feeding two 5,500-ihp vertical triple-expansion engines on two shafts. Steam vessels contracted under U.S. emergency shipbuilding programs of 1943-45 were built with era-standard asbestos applications: boiler insulation, steam-pipe lagging, valve and flange gaskets, machinery packing, and fireproofing/deck coverings, consistent with asbestos applications documented across WWII-era merchant-type and naval steam construction.

No hull-level document confirms any asbestos application aboard PF-102; quantity, locations, and whether Dutch-era refits (1947-63) or scrapping removed original insulation are undocumented.

- Locator
- NHHC DANFS Sutton (DE-771) page, construction note + May 1945 U-234 narrative
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Correction: the DANFS Forsyth (PF-102) entry names the escort at the 15 May 1945 U-234 surrender 'Button (DE-771)'. NHHC's own DANFS entry for DE-771 establishes that hull was USS Sutton (laid down unnamed 23 August 1943 by Tampa Shipbuilding Co.; named Sutton 30 March 1944), and that Sutton was detached from escorting surrendered U-1228 to accept U-234's surrender, putting a 15-man boarding party aboard on 15 May 1945. No USS Button held DE-771; the Forsyth DANFS text is a typo. The USCG Historian's Office entry for Forsyth (ev-02) independently prints 'Sutton (DE-771)'.

- Limitations
- Corrects the escort-name typo only; it does not adjudicate the relative roles of Forsyth and Sutton in the surrender. Sutton's DANFS narrative does not mention Forsyth at all, while Forsyth's DANFS says she 'joined' the escort - consistent with Forsyth arriving to support a surrender already being executed by Sutton.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or museum/archive record naming USS/USCGC Forsyth (PF-102) or SS Cumulus was found in the sources searched (see search_ledger). On CourtListener, the opinion index is a verified negative - all 16 'USS Forsyth' opinion hits and all 20 returned 'PF-102 asbestos' opinion hits were reviewed and are name/token collisions; the docket index is a partial negative - page-1 results of the 'USS Forsyth' (443) and 'PF-102' (21,596) docket queries are all collisions, and the two asbestos-qualified docket-subset probes were blocked by the fleet pace limiter (logged blocked, not negative). Web results asserting asbestos aboard PF-102 are law-firm marketing listicles (shepardlawfirm.com, mesothelioma.net, mesolawcenter.com, worthingtoncaron.com, gorilaw.com) with no primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1944 Maritime Commission steam frigate is era-consistent with retained asbestos materials, and the hull's Dutch civilian service (1947-63) and 1960s scrapping left no public hazmat trail. Litigation coverage is bounded: opinion index fully searched; docket index searched to first result pages only, with asbestos-qualified docket-subset probes unexecuted (fleet pace limiter). Does not establish or defeat any exposure or legal-eligibility claim.
