- The page is an archival photo-index transcription rather than a Navy-maintained ship-history database; it supports the listed dates and disposition but does not provide asbestos information, exposure evidence, or a complete service chronology.

- Specifications section: Complement and Propulsion
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The ship-specific record identifies Fort Mandan's machinery as two Newport News steam turbines, two Babcock and Wilcox oil-fired D-type boilers, twin propellers, and 7,000 shaft horsepower; it reports a complement of 17 officers and 237 enlisted personnel and troop accommodations of 22 officers and 218 enlisted personnel.

- Limitations
- The complement figures differ in presentation from the 240-person DANFS summary; both are retained as source-specific figures rather than mathematically reconciled. The machinery description does not identify insulation materials or asbestos.

[4]National Archives, Researching Asbestos aboard US Naval Vessel up through 1961 [other_primary]

- Beginning Research; Cartographic Branch / Ship Engineering Drawings sections
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- The 1945 construction date and steam propulsion place Fort Mandan in the period and machinery context for which asbestos-focused review of Navy engineering drawings is appropriate; period-relevant research targets include insulation and lagging (S39) and piping (S48) records. This is class/era context and does not establish that asbestos was installed aboard LSD-21.

- Limitations
- NARA expressly states that the identified drawing series do not themselves provide direct evidence of asbestos presence. No Fort Mandan drawing, survey, sample result, or abatement document was retrieved.

- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-fort-mandan-lsd21-01 through sl-uss-fort-mandan-lsd21-08
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos documentation was located in the public sources reviewed: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, material inventory, or official hazmat disclosure naming Fort Mandan was found. The available ship history and NARA guidance identify archival leads but do not prove presence or absence of asbestos aboard the hull.

- Limitations
- This is a negative public-record finding, not proof that asbestos was absent. It does not establish exposure, causation, legal eligibility, or the condition of any original ship material.

[6]CourtListener API v4 authenticated helper; exact-name opinion query completed, remaining required queries stood down on limiter guidance [court_record]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-fort-mandan-lsd21-04 through sl-uss-fort-mandan-lsd21-07
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- CourtListener exact-name opinion search for "Fort Mandan" returned six results, all classified as name collisions or unrelated references; none was a qualifying asbestos-litigation opinion naming USS Fort Mandan or LSD-21. The required exact-name docket query and exact hull-number opinion/docket queries were not completed after the authenticated helper reported that the fleet-wide pacing budget was momentarily spent.

- Limitations
- This is not a completed litigation sweep: docket and hull-number searches remain an explicit gap. The six opinion hits were not treated as exposure evidence because they did not identify the vessel as a litigated asbestos subject.
