- 30 October 1944 kamikaze section; 19 March 1945 fire section; OL summary
- Finding type

- Finding
- DANFS documents two battle-damage repair periods: a kamikaze hit 30 October 1944 (56 crew killed) led to temporary repairs at Ulithi then dry dock at Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton, arriving 22 November and docking 28 November 1944; and on 19 March 1945 two Japanese bombs set off a catastrophic ordnance and fuel fire that killed 724 of her crew per the NHHC Online Library summary (DANFS counts 796 dead including air group, 265 wounded) - she steamed under her own power to the New York Navy Yard, arriving 30 April 1945 for repairs that ran past war's end into 1946.

[3]DANFS entry 'Franklin III (CV-13)'; NHHC Naval Aviation appendix (app03.pdf) carrier table [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- DANFS postwar section; app03 CV-13 row
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Final disposition per DANFS and NHHC: repairs completed after V-J Day but Franklin saw no further flight service; decommissioned 17 February 1947 at Bayonne, N.J., and laid up in the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. Reclassified CVA-13 (1 October 1952), CVS-13 (8 August 1953), and AVT-8 (8 May 1959) while in reserve. Stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in October 1964 (NHHC carrier appendix gives 10 October; other NHHC material gives 1 October). An initial sale to Peck Iron & Metal Co., Portsmouth, Va., was undone when the Navy repossessed her for her four turbo-generators; sold again 27 July 1966 to Portsmouth Salvage Co., Chesapeake, Va.; departed naval custody under tow of Red Star Towing Co. the evening of 1 August 1966. Four WWII battle stars.

[4]Batch-56 search ledger (this record): govinfo USCOURTS 'USS Franklin'/'U.S.S. Franklin' asbestos sweeps; opinion text inspection [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-franklin-cv13-05 and -06; Pelker/Coury/Hedden opinion texts
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Litigation sweeps for this hull returned only name collisions: every 'USS Franklin' asbestos hit in the govinfo USCOURTS collection (Pelker, Coury, Hedden, and related MDL-875 opinions) refers to USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA-42), a Midway-class carrier - not CV-13. No qualifying asbestos litigation naming CV-13 was located.

- Limitations
- Negative on qualifying litigation only - the FDR collision pattern was confirmed by reading the ship references inside each opinion. Coverage gap: CourtListener API was throttled this session (see search_ledger); a case outside govinfo/USCOURTS coverage could exist.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No ship-specific asbestos record of any kind located for this hull: no asbestos or insulation survey, no abatement or repair contract naming CV-13, no dismantlement hazmat disclosure, and no litigation record at any stage naming this hull was found in the sources searched.

[6]Essex-class profile (class-a/essex-class.class.json); O'Neil v. Crane Co., 53 Cal. 4th 335 (2012) for era Navy spec context; DANFS spec block [other_primary]
- Locator
- class profile era-application list; O'Neil steam-system specification discussion
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Class/era context: Essex/Ticonderoga-class carriers were built 1941-45 under peak-era Navy insulation specifications - the class record for this profile lists eight boilers feeding four geared steam turbines, and the published O'Neil record (Cal. Supreme Court 2012, on sister ship USS Oriskany) confirms Navy specifications of the era required asbestos-containing insulation and gasket/packing materials on warship steam systems. Era-typical applications for the class: boiler/fireroom insulation, steam-pipe lagging, turbine lagging, valve and flange gaskets and packing, deck tile, bulkhead insulation, and cable insulation.
