- DANFS establishes identity and the in-service window only; it contains no details on construction, conversion, operations, machinery, or materials, and no asbestos information. Transcription source (hazegray.org) is a mirror of the official DANFS text; the live NHHC site never published a Frigate Bird I page (verified 2026-09-23 - only Frigate Bird II, AMS-191, has an NHHC DANFS page).

- NavSource is a secondary compilation of official data (Naval Register dates, NARA photo credit), not itself a primary record - underlying register entries not directly inspected. Contains no asbestos or materials information. Foundering date given here (21 Dec 1967) conflicts with the contemporary Long Beach Independent report (Dec 1965) - see ev-uss-frigate-bird-amc27-05 and gaps.

- Finding
- The Harbor Boat Building yard list records hull 47 as official number 233869 Star of San Pedro, purse seiner, 112 tons, 81 ft LOA, delivered 1935, 'to USN 1940 as Frigate Bird (AMc-27), returned 1945.' Yard founded by Romolo Rados in 1919 at Terminal Island; renamed Harco after WWII; closed in the 1970s.

- Limitations
- Secondary compiled yard list (compiler credits yard records from John Gregory Rados, 1925-1944); not the builder's original ledger. Corroborates NavSource on builder, tonnage, and the 1940/1945 Navy transfer-return. No asbestos or materials content. A companion table on the same site gives 83 ft length vs 81 ft here - minor internal discrepancy noted in gaps.

[4]HyperWar (ibiblio), 'U.S. Navy Minecraft, 1940-1945' - AMc Coastal Minesweepers type summary and hull table [other_primary]
- Locator
- HyperWar ships-dm.html, 'AMc -- Coastal Minesweepers' header block and table row for AMc-27
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- The AMc converted-vessel summary describes the type as diesel-engined (~400 h.p.) coastal minesweepers 'converted from commercial fishermen (except 203 and 204): mostly draggers and purse seiners, largely tuna clippers from west coast ports,' complement 15-47, armament light or none. AMc-27 appears in the table as 'Frigate Bird, 1941, ex-Star of San Pedro (1935).' On era-typical asbestos: a small wooden fishing craft with a diesel plant had no boilers or steam lines; plausible asbestos applications aboard conversions of this type were limited to engine exhaust lagging, gaskets/packing, and electrical insulation - the narrowest footprint of any WWII naval type.

- Limitations
- Type-level (class_or_era) documentation, not a hull record - the table lists this hull but the specifications describe the type generally. The asbestos application list is era inference only; no source located documents any asbestos product installed aboard this hull. Does not establish presence, quantity, or any individual exposure.

[5]Long Beach Independent, 'Fish Boat Sinking, Rescue of 9 Told' (1965-12-22), as transcribed on Islapedia's Reliant (#233869) page, which cites MVUS 1968 for the registry particulars [reputable_press]

- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Contemporary press account of the loss of ON 233869 (the former Star of San Pedro / USS Frigate Bird): the Reliant, an 82-foot San Pedro fishing boat, foundered at about 4:45 a.m. on Tuesday, 21 December 1965 (article dated Wednesday 22 December 1965) roughly 12 miles southwest of the west end of San Clemente Island in ~640 fathoms; flooding through the stern could not be controlled by pumps. All nine aboard survived by launching the power-hoisted skiff and were picked up by the fishing boat Sunset. Owner/captain John Marovich of San Pedro; engineer John Oates; the '30-year-old' vessel was carrying 60 tons of mackerel.

- Fishing crew of nine (1965)
- Limitations
- Newspaper transcription hosted on a niche reference wiki (Islapedia); the original Independent page was not directly inspected. The account's internal dates (Dec 22 1965 dateline, 'Tuesday' sinking, '30-year-old' 1935-built boat) support a 1965 loss, which conflicts with NavSource's 21 Dec 1967 - conflict unresolved. Islapedia's summary line also gives '15 gross tons' and '(1835-1965)', both apparent transcription errors vs the 112-ton/1935 record. No asbestos content.

- Finding
- A National Archives still picture (19-N-23987) documents this hull operating off Seattle in May 1941, consistent with its 13th Naval District assignment; the NARA still-picture files and any conversion file for the 1940-41 acquisition (RG 19 / RG 181 district records) are the remaining archival leads.

[7]Batch-1562 search ledger (this record): CourtListener opinion and RECAP-docket searches on vessel name, hull number, and former names; NHHC/DANFS; NavSource; Shipbuilding History; Islapedia/MVUS references [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-frigate-bird-amc27-01 through sl-uss-frigate-bird-amc27-12
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no survey, abatement, or hazmat disclosure exists for this hull (the vessel foundered in the 1960s, before such documentation regimes existed), and no litigation naming the vessel was found. CourtListener returned zero opinions for 'Frigate Bird' and 'Star of San Pedro'; the seven 'AMC-27/AMc-27' opinion hits are all collisions on A.M.C. (American Maritime Cases) reporter citations, AMC Entertainment litigation, and municipal-code references; the twelve 'Frigate Bird' docket hits are full-text matches to the bird species in unrelated environmental and civil filings.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - but for this hull the era inference itself is minimal (small diesel-powered wooden fishing craft). Does not establish that asbestos was or was not present; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
