Cmdr. G. C. Ewing, USNR, in command; reclassified DEC-705 'on 13 September' (year unstated; contextually 1950) and DE-705 on 27 December 1957. Spec block: Buckley class; 1,400 t; 306 ft; beam 36 ft 10 in; draft 9 ft 5 in; 24 kt; complement 186; armament 3x3-in, 3x21-in tt, 8 dcp, 1 hh, 2 dct. Service: two Bizerte convoy-escort voyages 25 July - 18 November 1944; new equipment and Pacific training; Manus 23 January 1945; escort duty to and in the Philippines until 30 August (Carolines; Lingayen Gulf, Manila, Zamboanga; Hollandia; one voyage to Okinawa); Buckner Bay 3 September 1945 escorting occupation-troop transports to Korea and China; sailed for home 8 November; Boston 15 December; Green Cove Springs 20 January 1946; decommissioned in reserve 30 June 1947. Recommissioned 6 October 1950 as control escort vessel with added communication gear; Caribbean training; San Diego home port 11 March 1951; amphibious-exercise control vessel and Fleet Sonar School training; 7th Fleet Far East tour 6 March - 2 October 1952 (barrier patrol off Okinawa, amphibious exercises off Japan, submarine training); second Far East deployment 1 September 1953 - 5 June 1954 (Okinawa, Inchon, Chigasaki, Bonins amphibious exercises); decommissioned at San Diego 9 December 1954, placed in reserve. Namesake: PFC Raymond Frybarger, Jr., USMC Reserve, born 22 April 1923 in Toledo, Ohio, enlisted 22 April 1940, KIA Guadalcanal 14 September 1942, posthumous Navy Cross for maintaining rifle fire during the Henderson Field attack.

Defoe Shipbuilding construction trades (Bay City, 1943-44); USN crew 1944-47 and 1950-54 (design complement 186)
    Limitations
DANFS documents construction, specifications, and service history - not materials or asbestos content. Gives no laid-down date (NavSource supplies 8 Nov 1943) and no striking/disposal tail (entry ends in reserve 1954). The DEC-705 reclassification is dated '13 September' without a year and conflicts with NavSource's 13 December 1950 - carried in gaps. Live NHHC page returns 404; verbatim mirror transcription cited.

Photo-archive detail corroborating and extending DANFS: keel laid 8 November 1943 at Defoe Shipbuilding Corp., Bay City, Mich.; launched and christened 25 January 1944 (sponsor Miss Carol J. Frybarger); commissioned 18 May 1944 at Naval Station New Orleans, La.; decommissioned 30 June 1947 at Green Cove Springs, Fla. after 3 years and 1.5 months of service; recommissioned 6 October 1950 assigned to Destroyer Force, Pacific, at San Diego; reclassified DEC-705 (Destroyer Escort Control) 13 December 1950 - a conflict with DANFS's '13 September' carried in gaps; decommissioned 9 December 1954 at San Diego after 4 years and 2 months; reclassified DE-705 27 December 1957; stricken from the NVR 1 December 1972 with 7 years and 3.5 months total commissioned service; sold 27 November 1973, scrapped. Spec block corroborates DANFS (TE turbine-electric; 2 'D' express boilers; GE turbines; 12,000 shp; 24 kt; complement 15/198) and adds call sign NTRP, 6,000 nm range at 12 kt, and full armament fit. Command roster: Lcdr. G. C. Ewing (commissioning) 18 May 1944 onward; Lcdr. Leonard Tway Switzer Dec 1946 - 30 Jun 1947; Lcdr. Henry Ellis Hollingsworth from 6 Oct 1950. The defunct USS Frybarger reunion site is noted; caption credits include NHHC photo NH numbers.

    Limitations
Volunteer-maintained photo archive - lead-level documentation, not an official record; dates, roster, and photo captions are unverified against the underlying USN/NHHC/NARA originals. The '13 December 1950' DEC-705 date conflicts with DANFS's '13 September' (carried in gaps). Nothing on materials aboard.

    Finding
Era/design inference for a steam-plant escort built at Defoe, Bay City, in 1943-44: the TE machinery plant - two 'D' express-type boilers at 435 psi/750F superheat feeding GE turbo-electric machinery (12,000 shp, 2 shafts, ~24 kt) - is a full steam plant, so the period-standard asbestos categories apply as inference: boiler and fireroom insulation, steam-line and turbine lagging, valve/flange gaskets and machinery packing, fireproofing, deck coverings, accommodation insulation, and friction linings on deck machinery. The navypedia TE block map assigns Combustion Engineering boilers to the DE-693-705 block that includes this hull (unverified against contract documents).

Defoe Shipbuilding construction trades 1943-44; USN engineering crew 1944-47, 1950-54
    Limitations
Class/era inference only - not a ship-specific finding. No member-level asbestos record exists for DE-705 or any other Buckley hull in the sources searched (class profile negative finding). The boiler-manufacturer assignment is navypedia-sourced and unverified; whether asbestos products were actually installed aboard this hull, in what products, and in what quantity is undocumented. Does not establish exposure for any individual.

Hull-number queries ('"DE-705"', '"DEC-705"', type=o) and RECAP-docket queries ('"USS Frybarger"', '"DE-705"', type=r) returned the fleet-wide pacing 'momentarily spent' status on spaced retries - final status in search_ledger rows sl-uss-frybarger-de705-05 through -08.

    Limitations
Sweep incomplete at drafting - see search_ledger for per-query status. The sweep covers only CourtListener-indexed federal/state appellate opinions and RECAP dockets; it does not cover non-indexed state trial records, asbestos trust claims, or non-U.S. jurisdictions. 'Frybarger' is a rare surname - low collision surface, but any future hit still requires classification (the namesake family name appearing in an unrelated case is possible).

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no ACM survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, material-condition report, or litigation naming this hull was found in the public sources searched. No preservation-era documentation can exist - the hull was sold and scrapped in 1973 and was never a museum, memorial, or reserve-fleet artifact after disposal. Marketing asbestos pages for 'USS Frybarger' exist on lead-gen law-firm sites (excluded per sourcing rules; they assert generic class-era applications, cite no hull record, and one misdates the launch).

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. The hull no longer exists, so no present-day survey is possible; whether era materials aboard contained asbestos is undocumented in either direction. Construction-era yard records, mothballing files, and the disposal record are paper leads only (ev-06).

Archival leads for hull-level material documentation not yet retrieved: (1) NARA RG 19 holds BuShips per-vessel specifications and ships-data books covering DE-705's construction at Defoe/Bay City, and RG 24 deck logs cover both commissioned periods (1944-47, 1950-54); (2) Pacific Reserve Fleet inactivation/mothballing and reactivation records (Green Cove Springs 1947-50, San Diego 1954-72) document material condition and any insulation work during preservation; (3) the 1950 reactivation work package (additional communication gear, DEC conversion scope) is a repair-period lead; (4) the Navy sale file for the 27 November 1973 disposal may record material-condition or hazmat conditions of sale.
