    Finding
    NHHC records decommissioning on 17 June 1922, recommissioning on 24 May 1930, redesignation as DM-15 on 13 June 1930, and recommissioning again on 25 September 1939. NARA's named-vessel deck-log index separately gives the commissioned-period endpoints 29 November 1918–17 June 1922, 24 May 1930–22 December 1937, and 25 September 1939–1 June 1945.

DANFS places Gamble at Mare Island in 1919, 1920, 1921, and early 1922 for overhauls or repairs; at Mare Island for conversion to a light minelayer beginning 13 June 1930 and for 1940 maintenance; at Pearl Harbor for a September–November 1941 repair availability; and at Hunter's Point Navy Yard for an overhaul beginning 29 July 1943.

    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
NHHC records that two bombs hit Gamble off Iwo Jima on 18 February 1945, causing severe boiler and fireroom damage. The Navy decommissioned her on 1 June and struck her on 22 June. DANFS and the NHHC ship page say she was sunk outside Apra Harbor, Guam, on 16 July 1945; the NHHC casualty table instead says she was scuttled off Saipan on that date.

    Limitations
The date and deliberate sinking are corroborated, but NHHC sources conflict on the site: DANFS and its ship page say outside Apra Harbor, Guam, while the casualty table says off Saipan. The exact site requires a primary disposal record. The damage account does not establish boiler make, original insulation, asbestos content, or exposure.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
A 1979 Navy response reproduced by GAO says Navy ships used several asbestos-containing material types and that thermal insulation for machinery, equipment, and piping was a major application. NAVSEA's shipboard ACM control item directs workers to treat listed material categories as suspect until tested. These are Navy-wide material and work-practice records, not findings for Gamble.

These documents postdate Gamble's 1945 loss by decades and do not prove that any listed material was installed on DD-123/DM-15. No item is normalized as a product documented for this hull.

    historical_record
    Finding
NARA's asbestos research guide identifies RG 19 ship-specific correspondence, General Information Books, and ship engineering drawings under S39 insulation and lagging and S48 piping as possible paths to material-level evidence; it states that deck logs and muster rolls provide no direct asbestos evidence.

    Finding type

    Limitations
A negative search result is limited to the listed public sources and does not establish absence of asbestos aboard, absence of exposure, or legal eligibility. One exact-name CourtListener opinion query returned zero hits, but hull-number and RECAP docket queries remained blocked by the fleet pacing budget; no overall litigation negative finding is claimed.

    Finding
Authenticated CourtListener API v4 opinion search for the exact name "USS Gamble" returned count 0 and no next page on 26 September 2026. This classifies that one opinion query as no result. Hull-number opinion and exact-name/hull-number RECAP docket searches were not completed.

    Limitations
Search-index coverage is incomplete and query-specific; absence of an exact-name opinion hit does not prove no litigation concerning this ship. Hull-number opinions and RECAP dockets were blocked by fleet pacing and remain unclassified. This row establishes no asbestos presence or absence, exposure, causation, or case merits.

    Finding
