- Finding
- The archived NHHC DANFS entry identifies Garnet (PYc-15) as the former steel diesel yacht Caritas, built in 1925 by Krupp Iron Works in Kiel, Germany; purchased by the Navy on 1 December 1941; converted for coastal patrol service by Robert Jacobs Co., Inc., New York; and commissioned on 4 July 1942. DANFS states that Garnet served on coastal patrol and convoy escort duty, including between Pearl Harbor and Midway after an escort mission to Funafuti in November 1943. It returned to San Pedro on 15 November 1945, was decommissioned on 29 December 1945, transferred to the Maritime Commission for disposal on 20 February 1947, and sold on 10 June 1947. The entry does not discuss asbestos.

- Limitations
- This archived official ship history supports the stated vessel history and specifications only. Its silence about asbestos is not evidence that asbestos was absent; it does not document asbestos-containing products, crew exposure, or a complete propulsion-system inventory. Later fate and present location are not established by the cited passage.
